Strictly speaking, Thunderbird isn't a spirit either. It's more like liquid crack flavoured with air freshener.

Damn. Green River might just have been some oldtime soda pop. I always assumed from context it contained alcohol.

dave q (listerine), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

I've always thought Green River was, uh, about a river, partying by the riverside ("barefoot girls dancing in the moonlight")

probably one of my favorite CCR songs

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Well, take me back down where cool water flows, yeah.
Let me remember things I love,
Stoppin’ at the log where catfish bite,
Walkin’ along the river road at night,
Barefoot girls dancin’ in the moonlight.

I can hear the bullfrog callin’ me.
Wonder if my rope’s still hangin’ to the tree.
Love to kick my feet ’way down the shallow water.
Shoefly, dragonfly, get back t’your mother.
Pick up a flat rock, skip it across green river.
Welllllll!

Up at cody’s camp I spent my days, oh,
With flat car riders and cross-tie walkers
. old cody, junior took me over,
Said, you’re gonna find the world is smould’rin’.
And if you get lost come on home to green river.

Welllllll!
Come on home.

xpost.

jonviachicago, Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

indeed there's a NW regional lime soda called "Green River" but it's soft.

Tracy Byrd - Ten Rounds with Jose Cuervo
What about the 70s (?) country song "Jose Cuervo" with the lyric "Jose Cuervo is a friend of mine? Who had the hit on that, someboy named Shelly West?

Green River might have well have been some kind of moonshine. Mountain Dew is a soft drink, but the folk song "Mountain Dew" predates the soda and certainly refers to bootleg liquor (or in some interpetations, the cleansing glory of Christ).

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Check out the Wikipedia entry. Click on "soft drink" while you'
re there.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

after reading that, I'd reckon "Mountain Dew" might refer to a non-alcoholic drink. "I'll give up my jug, if you fill up my mug" yeah.

Snappy (sexyDancer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

So it seems like they both are substitutes for booze, hence the confusion.

Billy Joel, "Captain Jack" (if it's a Jack Daniels reference)

James Brown, "Night Train" (I know, I know)

Billy Joel, "Captain Jack" (if it's a Jack Daniels reference)

Mind-numbing, jaw-slacking Classic Rock query: "Captain Jack" by Billy Joel

Note the content and poster of the first response on that thread.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. The subsequent conversation got me to wondering, though.

Of the many songs called "Southern Comfort" my favorite (and maybe my favorite drinkin' song ever) is by English folksinger Rosie Hardman, which survives in my collection on a mixtape from a long out-of-print album on a tiny label that I'll never find again. What a voice.

Then there's Ian Matthews, who named a song, an album and even his band after the sweet, golden nectar.

briania (briania), Friday, 4 February 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

Denny Doherty also recorded a song called "Southern Comfort."
