Seriously.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 February 2005 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, who buys any album, really.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

people who don't care what elitist idiots like you think.

chingy, Friday, 11 February 2005 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Bitter much?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Chingy, the People's Avenger!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 February 2005 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

that's right. i like ashlee simpson too.

chingy, Friday, 11 February 2005 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

How about Lindsay Lohan? You gonna suck down that soma too?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 February 2005 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i knew this was an alex in nyc thread!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 11 February 2005 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd fuck lindsay lohan. but she ain't no jessica simpson, far as the singing goes.

chingy, Friday, 11 February 2005 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Jessica Simpson ain't no Lindsay Lohan, as far the tits go.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 11 February 2005 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind the Kelly Clarkson album. I didn't buy it, however.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 11 February 2005 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

many parents buy the kelly clarkson album for their daughters. none of them return it. the lindsey lohan album resides directly beneath the pay counter (lest you think it's favortism, it's because we have so many copies there's nowhere else to put them) and is often picked up and ridiculed by the aforementioned daughters. britney spears is totally ignored, except for the college kid who lost a bet and had to be photographed buying her greatest hits CD. ashlee outsells jessica, despite the lipsync travesty.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 11 February 2005 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

also hot teen product: jessie mccartney and ryan cabrera.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 11 February 2005 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I love "Since U Been Gone", but have absolutely no desire to purchase the album.
So, I dunno.

Un investigador del siglo XXI (AaronHz), Friday, 11 February 2005 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

That scary kid that calls Howard Stern's show all the time to talk about Kelly Clarkson and American Idol.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 11 February 2005 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I luv teh tits!

Clay Aiken (Chris V), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

My mom has bought everything by Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, and Fantasia, plus those Christmas cds by the casts.

I really love "Since U Been Gone" too.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Only a fule could hate "Since U Been Gone".

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"That scary kid that calls Howard Stern's show all the time to talk about Kelly Clarkson and American Idol."

Eric The Midget

And ever since Hi-Pitch Erik prank called him pretending to be her, he won't stop saying "Who's Hi-Pitch? This is Kelly Clarkson."

billstevejim, Friday, 11 February 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you really not know Alex? Have you met people? Interact with society much?

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlfriend and several of her friends are huge Kelly Clarkson fans. They buy her CDs and DVDs and have been (as a group) to see her in concert. For some reason their love of Kelly does not extend to any other American Idols. They particularly hate Clay and Rueben.

These people are all in their late 20s and are fully aware of the array of music out there, they'd just rather listen to kitchy / poppy stuff.

Graeme (Graeme), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

My mom's love for Clay Aiken is pretty intense, she only just kinda likes the other idols. Clay has a VERY devoted fanbase.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you really not know Alex? Have you met people? Interact with society much?

Well, it was really more of a rhetorical question, David, but I can't say I know anyone who'd be tempted to spend money on Kelly Clarkson-affililated products. Although, who knows? Maybe I have. It's generally not something someone confesses to, I'd imagine. Sort've in the same way someone wouldn't be inclined to confess to the fact that they sustain themselves on a diet consisting solely of Twinkies and Spam. But hey, to each their own, I suppose.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The kind of people most likely to buy American Idol records are people who aren't that invested in buying records, but like watching tv and are willing to throw down a bit of cash at Walmart/Sam's Club/etc because they like singer and want to complete the narrative of the show by actually helping to make them a star.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken live last year. It was one of the flip-flop nights where Clay opened for Kelly, and at the time it didn't seem like anyone gave two shits about Kelly. How are her sales?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The new record is doing well because of "Since U Been Gone." She's on SNL with Jason Bateman this weekend.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"Since U Been Gone" is fucking great. I like how they go for that indie guitar aesthetic thing (it sounds much better in a pop context to my ears)

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there any other great songs on the album?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you really not know Alex? Have you met people? Interact with society much?

I just thought you learned by now that most of America's taste differs from yours. They voted Bush, they think of DEVO as "those Whip It guys!" and they think Robin Williams is funny. (I'm just hoping you agree with me that Robin Williams is NOT FUNNY).

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Robin Williams was kinda funny at one point a long time ago. That's as much as I can stick up for him. He's been painfully awful for at least two decades now.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw this thread title and thought "me!," which I guess means I need to go buy this album. I like the single about as much as I liked the first Avril single, which is to say quite a lot.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Check it out, I wrote a whole post about Kelly Clarkson without mentioning her butt!

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you elitist, condescending biznatch.

chingy, Friday, 11 February 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You humorlessly defensive bottom-feeder.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"Who buys Kelly Clarkson albums? Seriously." = it'd take a LOT of fake slap-bass to make that funny.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

heck it out, I wrote a whole post about Kelly Clarkson without mentioning her butt!

There's a first time for everything!

x-post

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

You have now revolted me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

(Then again I like imagining Alex walking into a Killing Joke concert to bad slap bass soundtracks.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Alex would've killed during the time of the Visigoths, tho. (Well, he would've "killed", and then he would've KILLED.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

What's "Breakaway" like? That song has done just as well as "Since U Been Gone" on the charts, but I don't recall ever having heard it.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like a gentler Michelle Branch single (or, more specifically, a better version of "Goodbye To You" - MB's, not Scandal's). More breezy and pretty and la-la.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

This guy at my work has her CD. I asked him for a CD to test out an amplifier circuit, and he pointed me to his CD wallet. Inside were Kelly Clarkson, Faith Hill, and a BUNCH of Train CDs. I chose "Drops of Jupiter" (whatever the fuck that means!). He also bought the Clay Aiken CD.

It's sad, because I actually thought Fantasia from last season had the potential to put out something good; but I listened to her record, and it was horrible. Either it's that Simon Fuller's company is insanely cheap about producers, or maybe it's that they really don't want to let anyone get too famous, so that people focus on the next season of American Idol. Or maybe both.

schwantz, Friday, 11 February 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno Fantasia's album from whatever, but "Truth Is" is GREAT!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds like a cleaned-up TLC b-side to me.

schwantz, Friday, 11 February 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

And that's bad?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

All I know is the chorus melody just lays me out and has its way w/ me, and I don't mind one bit. (Weirdo connection: it reminds me of the main melody from Shanice's "I Love Your Smile"! The doo-doo-doo part.) Also, she sings like what I imagine folks tolerant of Macy Gray's voice hear.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. From the half-ass wannabe-Timbaland beat, complete with awful chime strokes, to the silly lyrics and (compared to how powerful her voice was on the show) limp delivery, it's not my cup of tea. Maybe there's a single version of it out there that you're hearing. I DO like the gated, notched piano playing on the song, however.

schwantz, Friday, 11 February 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The song Missy Elliott did on that Fantasia record is pretty good, if I recall.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"My two year old son loves "since u been gone" - we sing it together at loud volume."

Rufus is 2 and at first he liked it, but his new thing is too say, "No, I don't like that song" when almost ANYTHING is playing these days. Especially when I sing them. Which is understandable. (He'll also say: "Is this song over yet?" a lot. But the poor kid is inundated with music, so it makes sense. Plus, he's just all about "no" these days.)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"Well, she's almost eleven months now"

Holy Toledo! It is frightening how fast time goes by. Why it seems like just yesterday on ILX...

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Today, Charlotte reacted very positively to both the Feelies and the Wedding Present, but was left cold by Liz Phair and was practically reduced to tears by the Soup Dragons, which is a perfectly reasonable reaction, I'd say.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

That's my reaction to the Soup Dragons.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 February 2005 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
I don't know if this has been posted because ILM won't let me search for Ted Leo, but Ted Leo covered Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps" as a bridge. Get the mp3 here: http://a.wholelottanothing.org/2005/03/this_weeks_best.html

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

He can't quite hack the chorus, can he.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

I do kind conceptually like using “Maps” as the bridge, since it reads like a moment of hesitation—you know, Kelly suddenly changing her mind and going “wait,” wait, maybe you should come back—but seriously, his chorus voice is almost bordering on that semi-ironic falsetto guys use for offhand imitations of pop songs.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

My thoughts exactly. Learn to take the song down another octave or something.

OTOH, I'm now interested in hearing Kelly Clarkson sing an acoustic version of the song.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

If this was a busker I happened to see in the park doing this, I would think it was one of the greatest things I'd ever seen. As a Media Event, however, it's a little underwhelming.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

When the hell did "Media Event" begin to equal "some blogger posting an MP3 of an acoustic performance from some other site"?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, hyperbole.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Was that a live performance? If so, was there anyone actually at the show? There's no audience in the background at all, not even a lame "woo!"

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

(Although I like to imagine a whole crowd of Ted Leo fans standing there silently with their mouths agape.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

bukkake the sheets

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Ted Leo doesn't realize how badly he needs that rhythm section

miccio (miccio), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

What was the context, though? I mean, sometimes people play acoustic guitars and sing songs.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

and sometimes people are exceptionally boring when they do.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Shrill Bill needs a ruckus and a groove around him.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, see, this was my original point. If I saw some busker and they did a medley of "Since U Been Gone" and "Maps" like this, I would think he was awesome. If it's someone doing it and documenting it as ART, I think you're right, it's boring.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

haha but the Pharmacists rhythm section is pretty weak a lot of the time! more so a couple years ago than recently, but there have been shows where it was like 99% of the energy onstage was coming from him.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

I mean I agree that he needs a rhythm section, just not that he needs that rhythm section (although better them than Chisel)

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Well dude, it just sounds like he whipped it off during a radio session or during some studio downtime or whatever, and in that context it’s, you know, cool, nice energetic performance and kind of fun. It’s just as a thing for people to be scouring the internet for that it’s kind of silly: anyone who knows a few musicians probably knows someone personally who could do almost as good of a job at this. (“Almost” because I guess Leo really does have a knack for playing fast and energetic without it seeming to require any effort, which is a rarish skill. When it comes to that, I don’t know if anyone can beat one of the Elvis Costello demos that’s packaged on This Year’s Model now—he jets right off through this song sounding ridiculously on-point and then kinda stops and goes “oops, let me start over” and then just pops right along through it again…)

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

and I think he's more aware that he sounds better with a set of drums behind him than almost every indie singer/songwriter out there, especially for one over the age of 30. (xp)

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

Anyway point being that it sounds like Leo himself just tossed this off for a radio set or something; it's the people searching it out who are excited; he's just doing a little acoustic cover, not releasing it as his next single or anything.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

Actually any busker who mixes "Since U Been Gone" and "Maps" is being far too cute for my tastes. Unless they can actually get into the lyric (Ted's take feels pretty superficial to me).

I've listened to Chisel and his pre-Heart Of Oak stuff but none of it (aside from a few tracks on Tyranny) have really sunk in. I think his current rhythm section is the shit (and his songwriting has tightened too).

He put out a solo acoustic EP. It was ass. I reserve the right to fret about further activities of this nature.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

nabisco OTM

if you're referring to the Balgeary EP, that was solo but it was all electric, not acoustic. not really defending it (although I like a couple tracks and don't think it deserves its bad rep) but get your facts straight if you're gonna call it ass.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

and i mean crucifying anyone for a stopgap EP (or a tossed off cover) is pretty extreme.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

alright, fine. it was electric ass. it was ass, though. ass.

I'm not crucifying anybody! I just think he should have his feet chained to his rhythm section's! He clearly tends to wander.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

also, Tyranny > everything else he's done, although it has a less solid rhythm section (his band sounds tight and rehearsed on the new record, sometimes awful on Hearts, and hit or miss live)

and yeah i apologize for the crucifixion talk, clearly shouldn't have been directed at you, although some people have called for his head for those minor indulgences, which are nothing compared to that "Tej Leo" record.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

oof. I listened to that once. yeah.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Ted testing out new songs and covers in solo sessions and short tours (which is all he's done in that mode lately, I don't see him going for a Nebraska move anytime soon) is infinitely preferable to aimless dub/noise experiments.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

I agree that Kelly's maps are sweller than Karen O.'s.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Mainly kids whose pubes have yet to start growing. Don't worry, they'll get over her.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Though Fever To Tell is one of my favorite albums in recent years, I kinda wish "Since U Been Gone" would get the YYYs to feel some need to compete, like an absurd version of the '60s beatles-stones-beach boys rivalry - jacking studio-pop techniques the way Max Martin jacked theirs. Doubt it will.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

or if Paul Banks said "woah! I've never gotten all vulnerable and aggro like she does on the bridge - I can try that."

miccio (miccio), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

The lyrics are lame and I don't care about her emoting over them in the song. The only good thing about it is her singing (mostly on the chorus).

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

The Ted Leo thing was about as good as I expected it to be. He really should have transposed it so he could sing the frickin chorus.

so my girlfriend bought this over the weekend, and i have to admit that its about 10 times better than i ever would have expected it to be. still not something i would spend my hard-earned cash on, but at least it doesn't make me want to gouge my eardrums out with a spork when she plays it.

So is "Because of You" a teen/20-something woman yelling at her mom (presumably) for having shitty relationships when the singer was a kid? Seems kind of whiny.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Saturday, 22 October 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

The video suggests she's yelling at both of her parents for having a shitty relationship, but essentially yeah. I read somewhere that she wrote the song a few years ago, probably when she was high school, so.
