R-Kelly's happy people/u saved me : C/D ?

coming from one of the most famous rn'b singer i thought the album didn't get much hype. i don't know if it's been a success in sales. as far as i'm concerned, i really like happy people. one of the...er...happiest records i know. i only need to play it to get in a merry mood (works better than pet sounds, even !). there aren't too many great trax per se, it's more a whole album thing. u saved me, is another thing. apart from the title track which i really like, the rest i haven't listenned to much and didn't really see anything special about it...
what do you think ?

just deleted from the hard drive, so DUD. i loved it when it first came out. songs are impecibly produced, but too long. that "step in the name of love" song is good. the u saved me side starts off so creepy -- that three way phone call is. just. bizarre.

also, Our weatherman R. Kelly the Pied Piper would you to know that it's love o'clock.

oh yeah, i forgot that thread (i've participated in !)
you loved it at first but not anymore ?
"if i could make the world dance" is great. "happy people" too (even better than "step in the name").
the three way phone call is... special !

I wish they had released it as two albums like Sweat/Suit because I have zero interest in the U Saved Me disc.

i've asked this question a lot of times by now but again : was it a commercial success ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

nowhere the size of Chocolate Factory but it still did respectably. especially for an album that was half gospel.

according to the riaa's searchable gold/platinum certification database it went triple platinum. i believe that's on their weird "double albums get counted as two" scale, though.

you loved it at first but not anymore?
yeah. at first it was like a blast of bubilicious (sp?) where the taste wears off after the a dozen chews. like i said, it sounds great, and as you note, the vibe is warm/fuzzy. but the songs aren't all that much to remember. i only vaguely recall the one with the video on the boat because i saw it at the gym recently. other than that, nothing.

that it is

my enthusiasm has diminished a bit too. The first listen was bound to be my most enjoyable - as I had no idea about the homogeny and structure. Now that I'm familiar with it I only really need half the album. "Red Carpet (Pause, Flash)" is good on mix cd's.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i think you're talking about "step in the name"...which is not on the album ! (but was the blueprint, basically).
true that the songwriting isn't all that great. i really like only 3 tracks (love signals, if i could make and happy people). but again, it's more of an album thing.
i'm quite surprised it sold well as there was almost no media coverage and... no hits !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 24 February 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah WGCI was playing "Red Carpet" a bunch over the winter. That's a great single.

That made me shoot tomato juice out of my nose the first time I heard it. I thought Kells was incapable of surprising me at this point, but I was wrong.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

it's called "Sex In The Kitchen", btw.

ok, just heard it. after one time, doesn't seem too good. not very catchy. reminds me of a track on "u saved me". it could be on it anyway. come on, i need another "ignition (remix)" !
i need some good pied piper of rn'b !
