Pretty much. "Closer" is dull as fuck.

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Friday, 25 February 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

Make "Disorder" and a couple of other "UP" tracks singles, then "Isolation" off "C", and we're done

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Friday, 25 February 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

"I've ranked the discs according to commonness, although, naturally, questions of volume and locale weigh heavily against how accurate I could really be here, so in aid of making it a more worthwhile guide, I disqualified all but a select few egregious and relevant examples from the the former class."

marc h., Friday, 25 February 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

Incisive

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Friday, 25 February 2005 06:16 (twenty years ago)

To blame for the Crow movie, ergo: they killed Bruce Lee's kid.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 25 February 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

too bleak?

Cunga (Cunga), Friday, 25 February 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone have "Atrocity Exhibition" on his/her iPod?

Aaron A., Friday, 25 February 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

One would have to be truly insane to rank "Closer" above "Unknown Pleasures", let's agree on that

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Friday, 25 February 2005 06:21 (twenty years ago)

"Closer" is dull as fuck.

You'd make a great stand up comedian.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 25 February 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

Although in retrospect, I wonder if Unknown Pleasures doesn't interest me just a bit more.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 25 February 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

They're used far too often as an influence or comparison in reviews.

(But really, that's more of an indictment of lazy reviewers than it is JD.)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 25 February 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

I'll go along with that. JD comparisons should be used very sparingly indeed.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 25 February 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

My brain has COMMANDED me to pull out "New Dawn Fades" on vinyl. And so it is.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 25 February 2005 07:03 (twenty years ago)

dave q expounded at length and very assailingly on Joy Division on this classic thread: TS: Joy Division vs. Flipper (hint - FLIPPERFLIPPERFLIPPER!!!)

M Carty (mj_c), Friday, 25 February 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

One would have to be truly insane to rank "Closer" above "Unknown Pleasures", let's agree on that

is it April 1st already? WHAT HAPPENED TO MARCH!!!

there is not a single song on 'Closer' that is less than excellent, 'Atrocity Exhibition' included. 'Unkown Pleasures' is great, but it has maybe two songs that come close to 'Isolation', '24 Hours', 'Heart and Soul', 'Means To An End' or 'Decades'.

Lee (fsharp), Friday, 25 February 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

This thread gazes upon its navel and discovers... lint.

Pointless, I fear. You couldn't get two more different albums in any band's ouevre than Unknown Pleasures and Closer, which is all the more astonishing considering their history, but, yeah, every note, every beat, every word, every hollow echo somehow matters and, silly ILM threads aside, these two records are truly irrevocably unassailable. Sorry.

Next! ;-)

David A. (Davant), Friday, 25 February 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

they were FASCISTS

jake b. (cerybut), Friday, 25 February 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

is that like rockist? you're way off the mark there. when that dude died, they went all disco.

Lee (fsharp), Friday, 25 February 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

I had never heard the Warsaw demos until recently, and I have to say that, unoriginal as they are, at least those recordings have a spark and energy that's entirely lacking in Joy Division. Hearing these demos, it really hit me just how crap and mannered Ian Curtis's cheesy vocal style had already become at the age of 21 or thereabouts. One can easily imagine what a tired joke he would've been if he had lived to be, oh, 24.

Also, the bassist sucks sucks sucks. Moronic lines as stumbling and annoying as U2. The producer (also highly overrated) at least had the sense to turn down the guitarist to virtually inaudible levels.

Furthermore, the lyrics are clumsy, at best: "And she expressed herself in many different ways and said 'I lost control again'...."

How can I express myself? Why, let me count the many different ways, Ian..... By far the dumbest line in a very dumb lyric.

Daz4, Friday, 25 February 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

24 hrs is the bangin' street anthem for my crew. We listen to big tymers and joy division. The big tymers get more play but seriously, can you fuck w the build and release on 24 hrs?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 25 February 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

I like this guy Daz4

Dude, your pics are fucked

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 25 February 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

They're kind of a downer.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 25 February 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Ian Curtis was a horrible singer.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 25 February 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Ian Curtis voted Tory

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 25 February 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Ian Curtis broke wind in my kitchen.

coco, Friday, 25 February 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Bernard Albrecht. Snigger.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 25 February 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

this is a still from a documentary about what might have happened to the band if Curtis hadn't killed himself. it was fascinating.

Lee (fsharp), Friday, 25 February 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

The lyrics are awful.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 25 February 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

"New Dawn Fades"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 25 February 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Worst thread ever.

And Closer pisses on Unknown Pleasures from a ladder. And if I owned an iPod, "Atrocity Exhibition" would definitely be on there. It's the perfect intro to that record: "This is the way, step insiiide..."

Ya'll fools.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 25 February 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but, Bernard Albrecht?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 25 February 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Ya'll fools.

Okay, I admit it, Ian Curtis didn't break wind in my kitchen.

coco, Friday, 25 February 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

He hung himself

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 25 February 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

hanged

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 25 February 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Those keyboards on the live tracks on Still! WTF!

miccio (miccio), Friday, 25 February 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

This thread has been completely and utterly unnecessary and I love it.

And yes Closer is better than Unknown Pleasures. Miles better, etc etc. It's just that I'd rather play Unknown Pleasures these days. So kill me.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

And yes Closer is better than Unknown Pleasures.

Yes but has Chris Ott written a book about Closer? Didn't think so!

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

They're used far too often as an influence or comparison in reviews.

Well to be fair, bands should stop trying to sound like them. It's just as lazy as the reviews and much more annoying.

dan. (dan.), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

These days I play the Les Bains Douches live album when I need my JD fix.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

It's always the girl's fault.

Sara Sherr, Friday, 25 February 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Joseph OTM, case closed.

DO I LISTEN TO "CLOSER" EVERY MAY 18TH? NO I DO NOT.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 25 February 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

So does that mean you listen to Unknown Pleasures every May 18th?

What I think is so funny is that this didn't even start out as a TS thread.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 25 February 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

and the deranged fools never even tried to do a beach boys cover...so

there

and their incessent lack of beards is quite pathetic

b b, Friday, 25 February 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I really like the song "Shadowplay", but then I saw a video of them performing it on Granada TV and my immediate reaction was STOP DANCING IAN, YOU = DORK

I wish I could find the animated .GIF someome made of Ian's dancing with nunchucks superimposed over his hands.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Friday, 25 February 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

YES!

http://home.comcast.net/~rjnims/nunchuck.gif

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Friday, 25 February 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

that!

is amazing....

thats a thread in and of itself

b b, Friday, 25 February 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Joy Division...that's definitely a band one "appreciates" more than "enjoys."

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 25 February 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Curtis'd be OK if he didn't have Lloyd Christmas's haircut.

PB, Friday, 25 February 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

OK, that clip has redeemed this thread.

As for Curtis, I've thought for a while now that he looks like Mr. Bean:

http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Stage/1570/Beanpr.jpg
http://images.quizilla.com/X/xcityrockerx/1061987348_CWINDOWSDesktopIan.jpg

(I still can't -- or won't -- choose between Closer and UP, though. Apples and oranges, dammit.)

David A. (Davant), Friday, 25 February 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

hahaha that's rich.

These days I play the Les Bains Douches live album when I need my JD fix

me too. that version of "Atmosphere" ends a lot of the mixtapes I make. is there a Joy Division DVD in the works? Or is there already one I should check out?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 25 February 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

sorry - joy division = dud

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 25 February 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Joy Division...that's definitely a band one "appreciates" more than "enjoys." -- kornrulez6969 (TCBein...), February 25th, 2005.

i always thought that 'bout Korn!

Rizz (Rizz), Friday, 25 February 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Is that an equation, Roger? "Joy Division would be a total dud without the sorry. With the sorry though, they were aces."

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 25 February 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i guess so. That sorry really moved units. Every band needs a little sorry. More sorry!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 26 February 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

Defend the indefensible: People saying "New Dawn Fades" is an awful song

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 26 February 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

I don't mind people saying that Closer is better than my beloved Unknown Pleasures, but come on people

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 26 February 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

But.... the dancing ... the dancing. The proof is in the dancing. How do you JD fans watch the dancing and not feel like you've been sadly deluded for all these years, worshipping a spastic idiot twit?

Curtis knew he was a joke. He wasn't about to go humiliate himself in front of American audiences, so chose to snuff himself instead. Wouldn't you?

[Of course, Curtis offing himself gave the world fucking New Order, so his passing didn't exactly do the world any favors now, did it?]

[As for which album has the bigger penis, Unknown Pleasures or Closer.... Well, they both suck. So there.]

[And as for you spastic twit-worshipping JD fans (at this late date, as quaint and archaic a vocation as being a Teddy Boy) getting all in a tizzy over the attacks in this thread, the thread title IS "Assail the Unassailable!! >Joy Divison", is it not?]

Oi! YougotgreeneyesOi!Yeswehavenobananas, Saturday, 26 February 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

Never liked them.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 26 February 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

"Your Favourite Band Sucks". How insightful and controversial.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Saturday, 26 February 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

The Comsat Angels, Breathless, and John Cale made gloomier records. *wink*

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 26 February 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

But.... the dancing ... the dancing. The proof is in the dancing. How do you JD fans watch the dancing and not feel like you've been sadly deluded for all these years, worshipping a spastic idiot twit?

Who exactly are you talking to? This is weird. Anyone who liked JD at the time knew that Curtis danced like a galvanized frog in a laboratory! You're acting as if this was some kind of secret, like either none of us were there at the time, or alternately, they've only just discovered previously unavailable footage featuring the band as they really looked!!!. WTF!?

Anyway, loving the music of Joy Divison /= "worshipping" Ian Curtis, ffs.

David A. (Davant), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

I like his dancing. But regardless, I don't see how Ian's dancing is any sillier than Elton John playing piano with a peacock on his head or P-Funk jumping out of a spaceship or ... (5894792 similarly silly-looking things).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

The Reverend, Saturday, 11 August 2007 08:25 (eighteen years ago)

I love the poster above who seemed to think that no footage of Joy Division existed before 2005, so JD fans were somehow deluded into believing that Ian Curtis didn't look like a lonely spaz up there. And that knowing this at last, these sheltered JD fans would suddenly decide to no longer like the band!

Lostandfound, Saturday, 11 August 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

Reverend, that is a laughable quote indeed. "bangin' street anthem for my crew" hahahahaha
