where should one start?

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Friday, 25 February 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

It isn't a vintage compilation, but Transmat put out a comp called "Time: Space" a few years back that is a good listen.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 25 February 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

i should probably specify i want classic detroit techno comps...

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Friday, 25 February 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Those are all classic.

Omar (Omar), Friday, 25 February 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Definitely the Relics Transmat comp that JoB listed, as well as the Metroplex comp (Juan Atkins' label.)

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 25 February 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, generally your best bet is to go for label comps: Tresor Vol 3 (Berlin-Detroit alliance), any of the +8 comps, the Jeff Mills' Axis comps (although I think they all contain just his music, but they're certainly classic).

Also, New Electronica put out some amazing collections, if you can find them. In that series, "Chronological Harmonisations Vol 1" and "Unreleased 1" are very Detroit-ish.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

There is another thread about these.

Definitive Techno Compilations (old and new)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Again I would say that you can start with WARP Influences. I would just pick up the Model 500 Classics and the Relics comp (maybe the May and Saunderson ones too) and that should hold you in good stead.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 25 February 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

"the deepest shade of techno 1+2"
"nettwerk biorhythms 1+2"
"relics"

for my money, those are the best.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 25 February 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

was thinking about this the other night myself.

I'm not sure if "True People: The Detroit Techno Album" is a search or destroy, it seems to get disparaged every time I read a mention of it... but unless you pay silly money I'd say it's well worth it and pretty varied.

Contains Drexciya, Juan Atkins, Eddie Flashin' Fowlkes, Derrick May and more (too lazy to insert discogs link here)

itchy bits (itchy bits), Friday, 25 February 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

True People is pretty great, what's the problem? There are a few boring tracks (it is 2 full CDs after all), but the high points are really good.

Nobody mentioned the grandaddy of them all?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 25 February 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe there has been no mention of Juan Atkins' "Timeless," one of the best Detroit mixes I've heard.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 25 February 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

live at the liquid room is mid nineties stuff mainly,so maybe not quite what you're looking for,but for sheer relentless chunky banging techno the first half hour or so has to be best example possible

robin (robin), Saturday, 26 February 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

stormy otm.

i like detroit 313 too.

S: Elements of and Experiments with Sound, Geology, Deepest Shade of Techno I+II, Faces & Phases

Detroitesque: Objets d'Art, InThere, Get Lost, Adventures in Techno Soul/Further Adventures in Techno Soul, Beyond the Sun

D: Detroit: The Third Wave, Eleven Phases (nice idea but, uh, no), Designer Music, Vol. I (Incognito rmx excepted)

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

uh, Detroit: Beyond the Third Wave, sorry. cool Shake track, but that's about all. even Alan Oldham's artwork falls short.

echoinggrove (echoinggrove), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

You can get that Shake track (soundblaster) on Gigolo records (#7 iirc) in 12" format. It's freakin great, and I concur, the best track on that comp (which I find to be pretty o.k.)

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

I love "Detroit: Beyond the Third Wave"! The Claude Young and K. Hand tracks are standouts.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

i'll proudly rep for will web's "life on tek", and to a lesser extent for sean deason's "vortex" and ectomorph's "insert another data disk".

on the other hand "detroit: beyond the third wave" is nowhere near the quality of anything else mentioned on this thread (eleven phases + designer music excepted)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

Point taken, but we're comparing gold and diamonds.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)
