What do you think is the best band ever to come from The Netherlands? I would say Johan or Bettie serveert, what's your opinion

steven schenk (skenker), Sunday, 27 February 2005 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Earth & Fire!!!

I am obsessed with the first album. So weird and beautiful in places. I have a massive crush on Jerney Kaagman's perm.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 27 February 2005 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

missed out on that one , they made some great songs/records .Jerney was a critic on the dutch Idols , and she hasn't aged that well , she sure was pretty in the 70's though

steven schenk (skenker), Sunday, 27 February 2005 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Shocking Blue. I don't know, is that the predictable response? I just love Mariska Veres so much.

Guitarthur and the Ecstasy Defecators (Arthur), Sunday, 27 February 2005 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The Outsiders

The Outsiders seconded.

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 27 February 2005 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Watch out, Mariska Veres is Hungarian.

zeus, Sunday, 27 February 2005 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The competition is none too tough.

Charles Dexter (Holey), Sunday, 27 February 2005 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

In fact I was just thinking about starting an Outsiders thread as there doesn't seem to be one. May still do so when I wake up for real.

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 27 February 2005 10:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Human Resource or Miss Djax.

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 27 February 2005 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Legendary Pink Dots, but I guess that's cheating.

Make it Boudewijn de Groot then, minstrel, for his Dutch answer to Sgt. Peppers, the album Picknick, beat manifest Voor de Overlevenden (For those who survived) and the spooky psychedelic and pagan Nacht en Ontij (At unseasonable hours).

Roger in Mokum (Roger T), Sunday, 27 February 2005 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ja, Boudewijn used to be amazing in the 60s. (although I fear we're not going convert any ILM'ers, Roger ;)

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 27 February 2005 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Zea!

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 27 February 2005 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 27 February 2005 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I like
De Artsen - Conny Waves With a Shell

Better than Bettie.

marcdrums (marcdrums), Sunday, 27 February 2005 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

where is the love for THE NITS? (or at least for "in the dutch mountains"?)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 February 2005 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Zea! -> named after my favourite band. :-)

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Sunday, 27 February 2005 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ditto the ex

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 27 February 2005 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Denis Bergkamp

*'s speechless for a sec*
*regains speech, in moderation*

...h-h-h-heresy! taking bergkamp (tho a great bloke) over cruyff (who's magnificissimo) is just mentalism.

...okey, i've no idea as per the taste in music of either :)

"alternative" answer: willem breuker (the bvhaast label, etc)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 27 February 2005 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Outsiders! and Dog-Faced Hermans! and The Gathering! Those are my three faves anyhow.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 27 February 2005 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

steven schenk, what do you know about The Phones? I have one of their albums and it's pretty cool. post-punk kinda stuff.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 27 February 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

dog-faced hermans came from scotland, but they lived in holland.
the ex & solex.

zappi (joni), Sunday, 27 February 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and donkey.

zappi (joni), Sunday, 27 February 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

2Unlimited -> belgian

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Sunday, 27 February 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"dog-faced hermans came from scotland, but they lived in holland."

really? i had no idea!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 27 February 2005 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah for Zea, Solex and the Ex. I also love Herman Brood. Joost Visser is cool, too.

I love how the Nits pronounce "mountains" (mountehs).

(By the way, does the singer from Zea have anything to do with The Books? The voice sounds similar.)

Not so fave: Wim Sonneveld and other zwijmelaars.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Sunday, 27 February 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"dog-faced hermans came from scotland, but they lived in holland."

really? i had no idea!

yeh i know! they formed in edinburgh i think, i had a video of them appearing on late 80s scottish indie tv series FSD doing 'cactus' and 'mary houdini'. hmmm i really should have a look for that video, its probably festering at the bottom of a cardboard box somewhere.

zappi (joni), Sunday, 27 February 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

MC Miker G and DJ Sven

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 27 February 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

where is the love for THE NITS? (or at least for "in the dutch mountains"?)

I need to get my friend Stripey here! She's a Nits fan par excellence.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 February 2005 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I-F's from Holland? I didn't know that...

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 27 February 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam Curry & The Dolly Dots!

nathalie barefoot in the head (stevie nixed), Sunday, 27 February 2005 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

the obvious, but sadly true answer (though the shocking blue -- and the gathering, who i'm shocked nobody has mentioned -- come close, i admit):

Where is the love for Golden Earring?

metal mike saunders a few years ago sent me a couple each 45s by the dolly dots (we believe in love, p.s.) and earth and fire (weekend, twenty four hours), and they were really nice; were these hits there? i think mike may have somehow acquired them via precious metal's singer lesie knauer, who was apprently in some nena-style europop outfit before coming out to l.a., maybe or maybe not in holland i'm not sure. as for the nits, i thought i might have an album by them, but nope -- the album i have is by NICHTS, who are apparently german; it's called *Tango 2000,*, 1982 WEA Musik GMBH. Nifty new wave that last time I played it reminded me of Indochine, from France.

chuck, Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"and the gathering, who i'm shocked nobody has mentioned"

Um, hello:

Outsiders! and Dog-Faced Hermans! and The Gathering! Those are my three faves anyhow.

-- scott seward (skotro...), February 27th, 2005. (scott seward)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

turns out i was wrong about the dog-faced hermans though. learn something new every day!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i had a great earth & fire record. but i traded it away to my psych friend dan. i would buy it on cd if i saw it. (songs for marching children, i think it was.)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

oops, sorry, scott!

and the only outsiders i know ("time won't let me") were from cleveland, i thought (unless i was wrong)

chuck, Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The Outsiders' CQ album is a work of art that blazes like a light beam!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i would buy an Outsiders boxed-set in a heartbeat. they were one of the great bands. PERIOD. From anywhere.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

so wait, scott and tim (and sara sherr -- hi sara!), you didn't answer my question! are they the same outsiders who did "time won't let me" or what? when were they from? and what did they sound like? how come i am the only person on earth who never heard of them? or are you all making them up?

chuck, Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

no, they are not the same, chuck.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the dutch outsiders were just a phenomenal beat/psych/rock group that had success in europe, but nothing in the u.s.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Their early stuff sounds somewhat like the Pretty Things.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I also think that Shocking Blue were seriously great. You listen to a greatest hits album by them and it's just knockout after knockout.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, thanks scott and tim, now who or what is o-zone? (we saw an ad for that today show spot in our hotel in baltimore, but we got confused. is that the song that was in some web cartoon thing about cats? if so, i only heard it once, and i vaguely remember it being a silly techno thing, but since when is it a hit? do they play it on the radio? in clubs? at the super bowl? or where? and what is the connection with that numa numa guy that the times wrote about? is that the same song, or a different one? are o-zone the yello or telex or baltimora or 2005? or not? why do i feel so fucking out of it all of a sudden? i try to keep up with things, but there are so many things to keep up with these days!)

ps) are the outsiders better than dowliners sect? (they were kinda great!)

chuck, Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(and speaking of o-zone, where were OPUS from?) (Germany, I think?)

chuck, Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Opus were from Ostereich.

No love for Buy Off The Bar? Eton Crop?

NickB (NickB), Sunday, 27 February 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I only have a Dowliners Sect singles comp, but based on that I would say that the Outsiders were a lot better. They just had a deranged glee.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Eton Crop!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

chuck, the numa numa guy is the o-zone group is the dragostea song.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

And Secret Cinema.

tylero (tylero), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Also the Outsiders were total badasses from Amsterdam who had the longest hair of anyone at the time. And yet, they were very sensitive...

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I was pretty happy to discover The Outsiders's CQ a couple years ago; it's definitely an underappreciated classic.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there was a pretty good article on the Outsiders in the old Perfect Sound Forever.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 28 February 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I just started this thread The Outsiders (from Amsterdam)! C/D?. Please come and amplify any remarks made here over there.

MC Miker G and DJ Sven

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 28 February 2005 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I see Jody mentioned Q65. I like them too. They had a couple of good tracks on the Nuggets II box, and their album Revolution is good too.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 28 February 2005 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Chuck! Yes, I was referring to the Dutch and more obscure than the U.S. "Time Won't Let Me" Outsiders. I heard a song called "Sun Goin Down" on a comp and was hooked. It's been covered by The Lyres and Mr Airplane Man.

Sara Sherr, Monday, 28 February 2005 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)
