What is the point of The Dave Matthews Band? When have indie and avant-rock (ever mattered to him)?

Because, I'm guessing, that DMB fans don't like indie and avant-ish music? Unless we're talking about folks like Nick Catucci, who's been pro-Dave in his writings.

Sara Sherr, Friday, 4 March 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Who says they don't? I does.

Allison (Allison), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

What is the point of this Dave Matthews Band thread when we have this Dave Matthews Band thread?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

what's the point of the dave matthews band, indie, or avant-rock when we have hip-hop/techno/old post-punk/jazz/classical?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 4 March 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

The point of Dave Matthews is that J.Crew & Banana Republic frequenters need a soundtrack for their lives.

Hahahahaha

Drunken Kindergarten teachers need something to "rock out" to. They are only so many Sting albums in this world, you see.

Dave Matthews, Saturday, 5 March 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

Funny thing is, I was okay with Dave til I went to one of his shows. Being a PJ fan, you would think I'd get into the whole long boring jamfest. Meh. ["There can be only one."] On top of that, the crowd made me feel like I'd joined the blandest cult in the world.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 5 March 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

again, fuck off

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Now, there's a good question for once. And the answer is, in the case of Dave Matthews Band (And Hootie And The Blowfish. And Nickelback. And Creed), there is no point. We don't need them.

Coldplay, Travis and Keane however (and even Athlete and Thirteen Senses). Now there's another story ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 5 March 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

that dismemberment plan connection upthread is un warranted

lemin (lemin), Saturday, 5 March 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

No it's not. Dismemberment Plan is the Dave Matthews Band of the know-it-all kids who don't like Dave because they have insufferable superiority complexes. At least in my experience that's how it's been.

Allison, are you hot and/or well off? Is that why you haven't been given a hard enough time in life yet that you can still appreciate teh David?

Travis Morrison is way more John Mayer than Dave Matthews ok wait

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 5 March 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

"superiority complex"

Dexter St. Jock, Saturday, 5 March 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Picking on DMB is soooooooo 2007.

Tantrum (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 5 March 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I saw Dave Matthews buying condoms at the 24-hour Barracks Road CVS once.

He had his damn eyebrow raised.

the oh face

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 5 March 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

I think a lot of people assume that ALL fans are upper class, snooty, what have you, and that's the main reason they don't like the band. They don't want to be associated with that certain group of people so maybe rebelling against, degrading; making assumptions about the band is just their way of announcing that. Those that feel the need to announce their hatred are worried about being connected with a specific group of people, which is essentially the characterization of a superiority complex. I've not had a bad life by any means, but it's not been easy; that doesn’t mean I have to listen to music that’s in accord with my history. Maybe some listen to DMB because it’s a pleasant break from an otherwise shitty life.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 5 March 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that's a stupid argument anyway - since when does how you look or how much money you have factor into what music you listen to? You can be born gorgeous with a silver spoon in your mouth and still listen to old destitute blues musicians.

The answer to the thread question is of course we don't need DMB when we have indie and avant-rock. Although the term "indie" used to mean something a hell of a lot more interesting than it does today. Just because something is "indie" doesn't mean it's necessarily better than DMB, if we're talking strictly about music and not a stereotype of the fans.
