Is this thing actually good for bands? I'm pretty sure it ended today or yesterday... what difference did it make? Why does it matter?

It's right to be skeptical. But the first time our label head ever saw us live was there. He didn't see us again until we already had a release on his roster. So it can happen...

So yeah isn't this the biggest non-story ever? I played SXSW with a band years ago and we played 9 shows and got paid for none of them. We got free beer but not paid. We played on the CNN stage and got filmed and it was on a webcast somewhere and they gave us free dinner but we didn't get paid any cash. We played lots of little coffee houses and bars at 10am and didn't get paid. And there were bands lined up right behind us all along the way.
I guess good for these guys on eeking out some free publicity, but yeesh. Slow news day is right. Bands don't go to SXSW to make money, they go to get exposure. Hell, if you don't have an agent you more or less have to PAY to play SXSW. Am I right here? Feel like this is a good news story to get people riled up who aren't musicians and if they are have never played SXSW and have no idea what is going on. There are tens of thousands of bands (probably more) playing at every hour of the day, in the official events and every sidewalk coffee shop hosting an unofficial event.
This band complaining is a bunch of whiners.

I mean should I be shocked that Lady Gaga makes money and this no-name band of whiners doesn't?

NY Times article about this now (have not read it)...
