The new Coldplay song which nick's the 'riff' to Kraftwerk's "Computer Love" has surfaced. It's pretty alright, if I do say so myself. I'll have a YSI up in a few.

All dry thrusting, no orgasm.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 7 March 2005 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is weirdly Erlend Øye-like--am I the only one hears it?

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 7 March 2005 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

*only one _who_ hears it?

Otherwise it's not bad, the Kraftwerk thing is actually pretty entertaining.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 7 March 2005 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear the Erlend thing.

Agree with the dry thrusting comment, but I don't mind a little heavy petting from time to time. Coldplay is now up to "tolerable from time to time," from "ball-rippingly awful" in my book.

Xii (Xii), Monday, 7 March 2005 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Coldplay find our "It Was All Yello: The Coldwerk Sessions" thread? HAS OUR LITTLE THREAD CHANGED THE COURSE OF ROCK HISTORY?

They nicked the bassline too.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 7 March 2005 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, crap. Does this mean that all the douchebags I know that listen to Coldplay are going to start listening to Kraftwerk? Farg.

(that's not too rockist, is it?)

poortheatre (poortheatre), Monday, 7 March 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i've never hated them. They are a tad boring from time to time, but coldplay are overhated.

This song is neat.

djdee (djdee2005), Monday, 7 March 2005 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there not some song out with the exact same melody as the chorus in this? The "I don't know where I'm going and I want to talk" bit. Some spiky haircutted, NYC, uniformed, eyelinered, think they sound like New Order but really sound like the Cure, 'The XXXXXXXs" nonsense. Please tell me it's so. Otherwise I'm going to have to watch MTV 2 all day.

winterland, Monday, 7 March 2005 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I am completely terrified of hearing this. I mean, I know it will have to happen eventually, but I'd really really rather hear somthing else than any attempt to sample or mess around with my favourite Kraftwerk song ever. Thank you and goodnight, I'm waiting for THE REST OF THE STORY.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 7 March 2005 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I like this more than I hoped I would.

Lingbertt, Monday, 7 March 2005 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like U2 to me.

kate/baby loves headrub (papa november), Monday, 7 March 2005 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds exactly like U2 to me.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 7 March 2005 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that good or bad?

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 7 March 2005 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the chorus sounds really familiar. the way it lilts upward at the end of the first two lines.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 March 2005 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it, I do here the U2, but chris martin /= bono vox so.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 March 2005 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

hear, obv.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 March 2005 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It just sounds like U2 w/a different singer to me. It's kind of neither nowt nor summat (shrugs)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 7 March 2005 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

as with 90% of all released music now i started hearing 'Mad World' over it after approximately 26 seconds

Sven Bastard (blueski), Monday, 7 March 2005 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

you and your mashups.

NRQ, Monday, 7 March 2005 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything apart from the chorus sounds like U2.

the chorus steals that "breaking my back just to know your name" bit from the killers "somebody told me".

It's not bad, but it's pretty boring.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 7 March 2005 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

This is alright.

I think the real test is how long it takes to get completely tired of, after this (or another as yet undetermined new song) gets played over every TV trailer and/or sensitive moment in a TV drama.

They should write a song called "Saturation Point".

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Monday, 7 March 2005 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

This is such a TV trailer song isn't it?

I hope JLC does a remix of this.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 7 March 2005 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a decent track, doesn't sound like a single though. Reminds me a bit of Roxy Music's "Out of the Blue," only less excited/exciting.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 7 March 2005 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

This is such a TV trailer song isn't it?

I bet you that the BBC already has an instrumental version for using under the montage at the beginning of Match Of The Day.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 7 March 2005 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the chorus steals that "breaking my back just to know your name" bit from the killers "somebody told me".

thatnks hari - that was driving me crazy!

jed_ (jed), Monday, 7 March 2005 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

An "All That You Can't Leave Behind" outtake, adding a Kraftwerk riff (they must have been aware of that!) and a different (although somewhat Bono-sounding) singer.

As long as it sounds like Coldplay, it's OK, I guess, but here I feel like the borrowing from other sources is a bit too obvious.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 7 March 2005 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

And, btw, I do not hear Erlend Øye here.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 7 March 2005 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Great Middle 8 though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 7 March 2005 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha, I stand behind Erlend Øye! This song is Kraftwerk + Erlend Øye + U2. Weirdly there is no Coldplay in it--it has been evacuated of all personality.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 7 March 2005 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Sacrilege, I know, but I think this single sounds better than anything off of How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Nice late-80s ripoff, with better production, like a better-sounding version of a stab at a hit by the Church or the Alarm (except this'll be a hit).

If they did steal the chorus from The Killers, that's pretty damn funny.

ffirehorse (firehorse), Monday, 7 March 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I just sorta wished that they'd done away the middle bits and covered Computer Love instead.

And U2 without Bono is probably OK, I reckon. Certainly about a million times better than with him.

Braces Tower, Monday, 7 March 2005 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

is this gonna be the single, does anyone know?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 7 March 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny how amidst all the Coldplay hate, it's actually their first album I like best (as long as you don't listen to the lyrics too closely) whereas this single is nice but definitely no orgasm. I have new found sympathy for the women who have a hard time coming. I keep waiting for them to blow this thing open and it just turns out to be a nice church hymn, all lilting, airy prettiness and no sweat or release.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

This is easily the best thing I've ever heard by Coldplay (I think in large part because it sounds so much like U2).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm hearing something no one else has mentioned. This sounds like Echo & the Bunnymen circa 1987.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Johnny, I hear a little of that too.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there not some song out with the exact same melody as the chorus in this? The "I don't know where I'm going and I want to talk" bit. Some spiky haircutted, NYC, uniformed, eyelinered, think they sound like New Order but really sound like the Cure, 'The XXXXXXXs" nonsense. Please tell me it's so. Otherwise I'm going to have to watch MTV 2 all day.

I reckon Honest Mistake by The Bravery.

don't see The Killers so much...

elwisty (elwisty), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, Echo & the Bunnymen circa the time period that I really liked them! I'll buy that.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a feeling I will regret this but...

*downloads and listens*

Hahahahaha, the "Computer Love" riff is so obviously hilarious I can think of nothing else. Crap, as always. The thing about Coldplay is that they are SO FUCKING LAZY -- they are the sum of a series of elements that draws on a slew of elements that I generally like (fuck U2 but the Verve/Echo jones is always nice to see worked with) but that they can do nothing with. They PLOD, and this plods. Jesus, what a bunch of dullards. Ditch the voice, slap a huge amount of reverb onto this thing, they might have come up with a Slowdive B-side circa 1991 instead of their usual 'I wish I was deep and meaningful OH GOD PLEASE SAY I AM' crapfest.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

(Even scarier -- I immediately switched back from that to a live *REVENGE* song of all things and it was ten times better.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Despite being mid-tempo, this is one of the few Coldplay songs where the drums don't feel plodding to me.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Revenge at their crappiest was better than Coldplay so that's not a shock!!!!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

god its weird to hear people rant and loon about such innocuous music.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

They always sound like they're falling asleep whenever they play! Here's a comparison point -- Low (generally) play all the more slowly and sparely and almost always have this tension, understated perhaps, in their performances, a certain drama. In comparison this is just a yawnfest.

Also, Revenge at their crappiest was better than Coldplay so that's not a shock!!!!

All too true!

Mark P, my friend, the song you had on the first ILX comp beat the shit out of anything Coldplay have ever done.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

This is great!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

But the only Coldplay song I've ever hated is "Yellow."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

ned, your arguing strategy is commendable.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

*bows* (And more seriously, if you want a formal take -- there was something in both the delicacy of your singing that is much more appealing than Martin's eh-whatever demi-croon and the way that the arrangement generally *flows* which works far more appealingly to my mind than the depth-by-numbers 'and then we bring in the piano HERE DO YOU SEE?' feh of "Talk.")

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, come to think of it, this live version of Revenge doing "Dreams Never End" is a hundred times better than Coldplay, so hurrah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

But the only Coldplay song I've ever hated is "Yellow."

Probably the only Coldplay song I'll ever truly love.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never heard Chris Martin sing better than on this song. He should never sing another high note.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the only song on which I have enjoyed Chris Martin's voice is "Such A Rush" which is a really really early Coldplay work which I have only heard because one of my friends loved them at the time. he doesn't sing high there either.

this song - I just listened to it, I can't remember anything about it apart from that the chorus never seemed to arrive. quelle surprise.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I will say that I like the overall sound here, but there really isn't much of an arc to the song, is there?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

'clocks' & 'in my place' are singles of this decade.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

that's true. They were both released in 2002.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought the thread title said new "Cosplay Song: Talk"

latebloomer: correspondingly more exaggerated mixing is a scarifying error. (lat, Monday, 7 March 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned's hate has strengthened my resolve, and I'd like to thank him for that. I've decided I can do this, I can take it. And if it sucks, well, it's already been adequately trashed here anyway. Might as well get it out of the way anyway.

On first listen I'm relieved there aren't any outright bleeps on it the way I was expecting, but I can't see the need of turning THAT riff into a guitar one, either. I mean how lucky is it for them that most of the people who are gonna hear it won't even associate that riff with anything? Well I hope Kraftwerk got plenty of money out of it, that's all I'm going to say.

Listening to it a second time now and finding the riff downright hilarious. Haha wait for it - there it goes again! Hahahaha No, there's really no point with this one. The proof of the pudding will have to be found on the rest of the album, as I suspected.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

comediaren't.

crossposts.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ditch the voice, slap a huge amount of reverb onto this thing, they might have come up with a Slowdive B-side circa 1991 instead of their usual 'I wish I was deep and meaningful OH GOD PLEASE SAY I AM' crapfest.

This inspired me to change my settings to add gobs and gobs of reverb and it sounds 50 times better!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 7 March 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Well there ya go!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 March 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretty song!

piscesboy, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

got it now. very 'CLOCKS'. it's their best lead-off track yet, considering how lame (looking back, comparitively) 'shiver' and 'in my place' were.

yeah they've been listening 2 killers.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my. I think this is the first time I've ever agreed with Mr. Snrub on a piece of music.

haha apparently it's being left off the new album.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Makes sense. Sounds like a second rate b-side to me.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

and strangely enough i sort of agree with geir. what the hell is going on?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

heheheh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh. Agreed on the Computer Love lifting. Although I guess
if Kraftwerk gets some sort of songwriting credit at least
it would make them some money. I'm just trying to decide
if I'm going to be the guy who brings up the "You know they lifted
thar recurring part from a Kraftwerk song, right?" thing everytime I hear it in the background, or if I'll just let it go.

Zach S, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Not giving songwriting credit to Hütter and Schneider for this one would be absurd. I mean, the riff is so obviously nicked from "Computer Love" not even Noel Gallagher - heck, not even Vanilla Ice could have pretended otherwise.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, they've already ripped off My Bloody Valentine ("Yellow"), Beverly Ann ("Clocks"), and Radiohead ("In My Place") without getting sued, so I suppose they can rip off Kraftwerk too!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The king of all I-can't-believe-they-got-away-with-this! ripoffs in Coldplay history has GOT to be the piano riff to "Clocks." Go listen to the Northern Soul song "You Got Your Mind On Other Things" by Beverly Ann and wait until the little riff right after the chorus. They're pretty much the samn damn melody!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I'm KNOCKING them, you understand. It shows they have damn good musical taste!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Now if only they could do something with that. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You can DL the song at scenestars.net

[Head explodes]

Palomino (Palomino), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Nicking a riff from Kraftwerk = fine
Coldplay nicking a riff from Kraftwerk (who I love) = bleurgh
Coldplay nicking a riff from the Killers (who I can't abide) = bleurgh

They can't win. As if I don't already actively hate on them enough.

Deluxe (Damian), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, they've already ripped off My Bloody Valentine ("Yellow"), Beverly Ann ("Clocks"), and Radiohead ("In My Place") without getting sued, so I suppose they can rip off Kraftwerk too!!

Some people still cannot see the difference between pastiching a style (which is genius in my book) and nicking a melody (which is blasphemy in my book)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

this can't be a single.. zzz.

Ludo (Ludo), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The immediate thing that got me is how arena-ready it sounds, especially in contrast to their first album, which seemed really 'close.' More reverb this time, I guess.

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

this song is a bonofied z

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ok more Edge than bono but fuck it. naptime.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I totally prefer "The Scientist" and "Yellow" to this

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The BonoEdgification is what makes this song work better than any other Coldply song for me.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, "The Scientist" is one of the most blandly loathesome pieces of irritating shit to ever be recorded by anyone ever.

I can't believe that to be true, Dan, because I can't even remember which one it is. I think I like it, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the one with the backwards video and the really embarrassing singing.

I didn't bring the song up, though! But anyway I'm over it because I am too busy being horrified at the thought of "Cosplay".

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

New album is called X&Y, released June 6/7. First single: "Speed of Sound" (May 23).

JoB (JoB), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The only thing I can remember about "the scientist" is the horrible, whining voice.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

x and y is a horrid title. the original idea of 'square one' was pretty cool i thought. im SICK of bands doing that. as we proved once on a thread somewhere working titles are often way better than the actual titles of lps.

piscesboy, Friday, 11 March 2005 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I have to disagree with the Coldplay haters here (and I am one of them, really). But, come on, this song is not bad at all. It's not great either but it's their best so far. I like the background synth strings and the "classic" indie guitar. It does sound a bit like U2, only better.
