I didn't get the "POV" kinda things for a minute either. I couldn't believe there wasn't a better way to say, for instance, "Good Charlotte fucking blows" than "POO: Good Charlotte". Of course i had a good laugh when I figured that out.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

Okay, whats a 4AD album? Forgive the ignorance

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

it's a British record label, Bryan. they put out a lot of gauzy new age music. But occasionally they signed some stuff with teeth, like the American groups the Pixies and the Breeders.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)

4AD is a record label.

throwing muses s/t
pixies 'surfer rosa'
dcd 'aeon'
his name is alive 'livonia'
this mortal coil 'it'll end in tears'

that was hard slimming down to 5.

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

1. Cocteau Twins - Victorialand
2. Pixies - Doolittle
3. Breeders - Last Splash
4. Pixies - Surfer Rosa
5. Cocteau Twins - Treasure

That was too easy. I really need to fill out my 4AD collection. (And I didn't intend for it to be tessellated.)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

You couldn't pick out five, Scott?

they put out a lot of gauzy new age music
NOnononononoNONO!!! Wrong, wrong, DEADLY WRONG! If 4AD put out New Age music I wouldn't have so many of their records!

Cocteau Twins - Head Over Heels

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

that was from the other 4AD thread. any 5 of those will do.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

admittedly, not a fave of mine .. though Colourbox album was totally ace (and very non-4AD), and i have realised recently that Queer by Wolfgang Press is rather fun.

guess no-one else is going to drop ILM's John D's musical adventures into the pot ?

all lovely packaging though .

and the forthcoming Minotaur Shock album will be my first 4AD record in AGES ..

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Five? Lumme.

1) Lush - the one with "Single girl" and "Ciao"
2) a compilation that was free with Uncut or Mojo or something

That's all I got. Oh, "Death to the Pixies" 2CD thing, but whatever..

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

I know what you mean, Koogy - I'm better on the three-digit numbers than the four-digit ones...

Is it really so hard to choose five? 1988 provides four of mine - House Tornado, Surfer Rosa, Blue Bell Knoll, The Serpent's Egg. For the fifth spot...Joy 1967-1990.

I presume there's a full discog out there somewhere? I've completely lost track of what they've released in the last 4-5 years. I bought the TM and KH LPs that came out the same day in 2003 but that might be it for this century.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

i used the eyesore thing. noticed a few names on it that i didn't recognise (starry smooth hound?) so it's probably more current than i am...

http://www.fedge.net/ftww/ goes up to end of 2004, nothing for 2005 that i can see yet.

in other 4ad news (http://www.20six.co.uk/4ad/):
"Lonely is an eyesore
Well the mega rare wooden box has appeared on ebay again. Lots of photos but unfortunatley rather blured. The starting price is a mere £1250 and someone has already put in a bid for it!"

ulp!

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Blimey - The Hope Blister's Underarms? Cuba? A Kristin Hersh video collection? Heart and Hand? It's like going back to your old house and they've completely redecorated...

Turns out, from the 00s, I also have 2k05, 2101, 2102 (as a CD-R promo that cuts off before the end), 2201 (again, CD-R) and 2202 (though I can't ever remember playing it).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

wow, Koogy, yours and mine are strikingly similar:

Blood
Heaven Or Las Vegas
Ultra Vivid Scene
In Ribbons
Surfer Rosa

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

unrest - perfect teeth

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

My favourites:

Dif Juz "Extractions"
Xmal Deutschland "Tocsin"
Cocteau Twins "Victorialand"
Mass "Labour of Love"
Modern English "Mesh and Lace"

I'd like to add Colin Newman's "Provisionally Entitled the Singing Fish", but I'm going not to.

Pangolino again, Thursday, 10 March 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Pangolino, are we really the only ones to list Xmal Deutschland and Mesh & Lace? It's like a conspiracy against doombass-driven music.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

> wow, Koogy, yours and mine are strikingly similar:

except i hate Heaven Or Las Vegas 8) (or, at least, think it's the least good cocteau twins lp - too late) (Blood's good though)

have brought all the cds into work today (with CAD313CD instead of CTBOX1) and am now listening to them in order... progress chart available via audioscrobbler

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm not surprised you didn't bring CTBOX1 to work with you - it's in a safety deposit box in a Geneva bank vault, isn't it?

I wonder if we'll see that Scott Walker record this year?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

Doolittle
Surfer Rosa
Come On Pilgrim
Pod
um, Gentle Creatures. Tarnation not massively popular, i see.

Lee F# (fsharp), Thursday, 10 March 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

can i demote 'Surfer Rosa'? thx.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 10 March 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

treasure, cocteau twins
red house painters, red house painters (1)
geek the girl, lisa germano
it'll end in tears, this mortal coil
sleeps with fishes, michael brook and brian eno

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

That last one was Michael Brook and Pieter Nooten (of Xmal? Xymox?) wasn't it? Not to be confused with Peter Noone.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

oops, right. eno worked on it though.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Lush - Gala
Lush - Split
Lush - Lovelife
Throwing Muses - Hunkpapa
Belly - Star

David Merryweather (DavidM), Thursday, 10 March 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

xpost - Yeah - wow! I thought at least "Mesh + Lace" would appear more. I haven't known that many who are really keen on Xmal Deutschland, so I'm not surprised, but I love them and am glad you chose them, too. I like "Fetisch", but the production strikes me as a bit weird compared to their Zick Zack singles - mainly, the guitar parts seem a bit less effective and more effect-y. I think if they'd done a whole album before they left for the UK and I had a copy to listen to I could appreciate "Fetisch" better for what it is. It does have a wicked bass sound.

Pangolino again, Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

I love Tocsin as well. I might have even played it more over the years than Fetisch! But Fetisch was the first thing that came to mind when I started that other 4AD thread.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

six:

underground lovers - leaves me blind
unrest - imperial f.f.r.r.
pale saints - barging into the presence of god
mojave 3 - ask me tomorrow
lush - gala
liquorice - listening cap

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Though a fine album, Imperial wasn't a 4AD release. The Isobel Bishop e.p. was Unrest's first for 4AD. The only full-length on the label was Perfect Teeth.

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

i don't separate guernica and 4ad. the Undies album wasn't really a 4AD release either..

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Birthday Party "Junkyard"
Pale Saints "The Comforts Of Madness"
Pixies "Bossanova" (yeah, and?)
The Breeders "Pod"
Cocteau Twins "Garlands"

Si Carter (Si Carter), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, only 5? OK hrm

Cocteau Twins - CDBOX1 (haha, ok thats cheating isnt it?)
Throwing Muses - s/t debut
Pixies - Come on Pilgrim
Wolfgang Press - Standing Up Straight
Red House Painters - s/t (Grace Catherdral Park one)

Man that so isnt enough...

I'd like to add Colin Newman's "Provisionally Entitled the Singing Fish", but I'm going not to.

Haha, me too! I think I just love that title, and the album cover is cool. To be perfectly honest I havent heard it though.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 11 March 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

um, if you can't do five, trayce, than just go here! :)

Favorite 4AD Records: OPX

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 11 March 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

I think it's fair to say I pull out Mesh & Lace with some regularity. Does that make anyone happy?

i don't separate guernica and 4ad.

Believe me, I wouldn't have left Spoonfed Hybrid off my list for any other reason.

Tocsin I don't play anymore, but did like it much better than Fetisch. Really interesting sound, and gorgeous sleeve, even as far as 4AD sleeves go.

oops, right. eno worked on it though.

Somehow I never realized this before. Wow.
