RAW POWER is the only Stooges record that merits a 10/10.

Maybe if you explain yourself, Brainwasher. I still won't agree, but . . .

i'd say "raw power" is the only one that doesn't merit a 10/10.

Fun House 10
Stooges 9
Raw Power 9

I dock Raw Power a point for the production and Stooges a point for the sequencing (I'd rather have We Will Fall at or towards the end, or replaced with a couple more rockers).

Don't Ever Antagonize The Horny (AaronHz), Sunday, 13 March 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

i love "we will fall"

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Sunday, 13 March 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

It's good for what it is. I'd only give a ten to a record I can't thing of anything I'd want to change. I've can't think of any thing I'd want to change on Fun House. Now, if they'd have put "LA Blues" at track three...

Don't Ever Antagonize The Horny (AaronHz), Sunday, 13 March 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

the debut is good. funhouse is one of the greatest records ever. raw power is a bore by comparison to either.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 13 March 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

btw is that a krishna chant on "we will fall"??

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 13 March 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

"btw is that a krishna chant on "we will fall"??"

I dunno, but we did the same chant in my kundalini yoga class.

Raw Power is the weakest Stooges album, but I still wouldn't kick it out of bed.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Sunday, 13 March 2005 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Hello, another stooges thread? (OK, the last one was about expanded CD issues, but heck!)

As the first Stooges album I owned was the Complete FunHouse sessions, that's one I now love.

Raw Power is great too.

The first one, I played once. Yeah, its got "Dog" and "We will fall" but some of the othertracks were only 'pretty good' rather than 'great' by comparison. Maybe I'll dig it out and love it some more. As I said, I just got through another entire playingof the sessions CDs, so who knows.

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 13 March 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

"No Fun" and "1969" only 'pretty good' ?? *head explodes*

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 13 March 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

raw power outtakes and pre-raw power demos > raw power

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 13 March 2005 09:18 (twenty years ago)

am i the only one who love's the production on raw power?

chris andrews (fraew), Sunday, 13 March 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

I like the original production, not the Iggy remix. That said, there's no fucking way that album merits a 10/10, especially considering Funhouse slays it.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 13 March 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

in the new rolling stone guide i gave fun house 5 stars and the debut and raw power both 4 stars. my brother-in-law gave me shit for giving the debut 4 stars instead of 5.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 13 March 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Rough power would probably sound more interesting on strong drugs.

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Sunday, 13 March 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

I prefer David Bowie's version to either the remaster or Rough Power.

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Sunday, 13 March 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

I agree w/ Scott and others: FH 10/5*, S/T 9/4*, RP 9/4*.

But "I Got A Right" (I think recorded after RP) rates an 11!

as a cobbled-together "4th album", Open Up And Bleed is one of the few non-studio records i would urge people to buy if they like the stooges:

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

eman (eman), Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Gotta disagree with you, Scott. After buying Open Up..., I realised I'd gone to the Stooges well once too often.

Vic Funk, Sunday, 13 March 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

open up and bleed has:

. Rubber Legs

2. Open Up And Bleed

3. Johanna

4. Cock In My Pocket

5. Head On

6. Cry For Me

7. Rich Bitch

8. Wet My Bed

9. I Got Nothing

10. Heavy Liquid / New Orleans

11. She Creatures Of The Hollywood Hills

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Maybe the first album wouldn't get a 100/100 on a 100 point scale, but giving it only a 4/5 on a five point scale is like giving it a "B" or an "A-." (I mean, technically it's an 80/100 which is a B-, but I don't read 4/5 that way.) It deserves an "A."

(I'm not giving you shit, Scott. I realize that you had to do the five point scale.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 13 March 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Fun House is so much better than Raw Power it's not even...er...funny.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

what's not funny?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 13 March 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Funhouse.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 13 March 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Don't know if I'd give any of them a 10 but "Raw Power" was always my top listen because of the screeching noise production put on it by Bowie. Never liked the "Rough Power" examples or Iggy being allowed to redo the thing so it would sound like an average hard rock record from the period. And Scott has the best recommendation from the Stooges after-action collections.

My take on Stooges mania

Regarding price, I saw the 2CD Legacy Edition for $15.99, only slightly more than what most single discs go for. It's annoying that the Deluxe Edition doesn't have the complete set of sessions from that era. Anyone have a tracklisting of the bonus/rarities disc? How does "I Got A Right" and "I'm Sick Of You" sound? Anything included from their Rubber Legs bootleg?

Disc Three: Rarities, Outtakes, & Alternates from the Raw Power Era Selections:

2. I Got A Right (outtake from an early aborted Raw Power session)
3. I'm Sick Of You (outtake from an early aborted Raw Power session)
4. Hey, Peter (outtake from Raw Power sessions)
5. Shake Appeal (alternate mix version from recently discovered alternate mix reels, "The Embassy Reels")
6. Death Trip (alternate mix version from recently discovered alternate mix reels, "The Embassy Reels")
7. Gimme Danger (alternate mix from the 1996 Iggy "violent" remixes)
8. Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell (alternate mix from the 1996 Iggy "violent" remixes).
(All tracks previously unreleased except tracks 3, 7, and 8.)

willem, Tuesday, 20 April 2010 08:36 (fifteen years ago)

There was plenty of room on that disc for remasters of other sessions from that era, like Rubber Legs, Open Up And Bleed, Johanna, Cock In My Pocket, Cry For Me, Rich Bitch, Wet My Bed, I Got Nothing, Heavy Liquid, She Creatures of the Hollywood Hills, Gimme Some Skin, Scene Of The Crime, Kill City, Sell Your Love, Beyond The Law, Consolation Prizes, No Sense Of Crime, Lucky Monkeys, Master Charge, Jesus Loves The Stooges. In an interview, Iggy hinted that they might revisit the cream of that material with new recordings. As long as it's done better than the last Stooges album, that might be cool.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 20 April 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

I wonder if the new Legacy issue is an improvement on the excellent vinyl rip which tyler linked from his blog...

tylerw, Tuesday, 20 April 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know how I feel about the new remaster.

I grew up with the Iggy remix, and I like the way it kind of makes your ears bleed.

I have both the vinyl and the new Legacy reissue, and they mostly sound the same except the new master makes a few things stand out better, such as the drums on "Gimme Danger".

banaka, Thursday, 22 April 2010 02:10 (fifteen years ago)

There's something to be said for that. My experience was similar with the original vinyl on a cheap stereo. If you turned that up in your bedroom to suitable volumne, your ears didn't bleed but the effect was the same. So when you're young and hear something with that audacity and impact, it forms an
inderadicable structure.

Gorge, Thursday, 22 April 2010 02:11 (fifteen years ago)

Sonic quality aside, the way they put the CDs into the gatefold black thingy in the deluxe edition = vv fiddly to get them out. :-/

StanM, Saturday, 24 April 2010 12:23 (fifteen years ago)

omg, that live disc. <3 <3 <3

I've got tons of boots (all of the Bomp ones, the Heavy Liquid box, etc) but this is by far the best sounding recording of their 1973 live shambolic genius, warts & all (e.g. guitar not plugged in during Raw Power?).

StanM, Saturday, 24 April 2010 13:14 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the live is fantastic, worth buying just for that.
8 days until they play Raw Power in london two nights in a row :-)

Jamie_ATP, Saturday, 24 April 2010 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

I'm such a sucker for the Stooges, I had to get this. This is now the 3rd copy of this album I own. I also have an 80s vinyl edition and Iggy's terrible mix. Just listening to the album, looking forward to the live disc, the main reason (excuse) for buying this.

Stan, can you say anything more about the Heavy Liquid box? (without wanting to derail thread). I've been tempted several times, but keep holding back. I have the Rubber Legs vinyl LP from way back and a late 90s 2-disc comp called Head On. Do I really need any more of that stuff?

Duke, Saturday, 24 April 2010 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

You've got the main bulk of the rehearsal songs with those two (the first three discs on Heavy Liquid (and the BOMP rehearsal albums) contain different takes of the same tracks) and with the 2nd disc of the Raw Power deluxe edition you're going to have a better sounding show than the ones you can find on the last three Heavy Liquid discs (and the live BOMP albums), so no, you don't need the Heavy Liquid box.

However, if you suddenly discover that the two studio and one live versions of (insert any Stooges song here) you know are all brilliant in their own way and you find you can't pick your favourite of those three, you're lost and you'll need to acquire all of the alternative takes and horrible audience recordings to not miss any other versions. In that case, yes, you need the Heavy Liquid box.

StanM, Saturday, 24 April 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

(sorry) :-)

StanM, Saturday, 24 April 2010 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

Cheers - I now know that I'm covered!

I'm on to the live disc now, and it's fantastic. I only have the Metallic 2xKO double disc, and was always disappointed with the guitar-less sound. This is great

Duke, Saturday, 24 April 2010 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

The DVD's not too bad. Pretty interesting stories about the making of and the struggle with MainMain. Iggy even gets a little teary-eyed at the end about how the album and band finally got recognition after all these years.

StanM, Sunday, 25 April 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta say, now that I have both versions, I prefer the Iggy mix.

thirdalternative, Monday, 26 April 2010 14:36 (fifteen years ago)

I wonder what would have happened if they'd took the master tapes and had a current producer make a totally new mix alltogether. Don't know if the ultimate mix is possible though. It's like Rock Action says on the dvd, the album is bigger than both these mixes.

StanM, Monday, 26 April 2010 15:21 (fifteen years ago)

I first heard the Iggy mix around the time I was was getting into High Rise/Mainliner/etc, so it always sounded pretty great to me.

Yeah, there's definitely something wrong with the guitar during the first couple of tracks -- a faulty cable or something. It does give us a nice insight into Ron's bass skills, though, which I'm enjoying. A great disc.

Duke, Monday, 26 April 2010 18:35 (fifteen years ago)

I've always had difficulties liking Scott Thurston's bar-room boogie piano, mind....

Duke, Monday, 26 April 2010 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

OK, I guess I'm a bit out of the loop here. Clearly I have some catching up to do!

I was aware of three RP's: 1. The original mix, broadcast on the radio prior to the LP release. 2. The Bowie mix ultimately released, and 3. Iggy's re-mix. I gather that there is a new one. This is a momentous event!

ImprovSpirit, Monday, 26 April 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

That WABX radio thing wasn't a complete mix yet. This new one is a remaster of the Bowie mix (that includes two tracks mixed by Iggy, like the original release). Or something.

StanM, Monday, 26 April 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

London show last night was amazing. setlist below. sounds silly but it was so amazing that it didn't feel like much could have changed quality/attitude wise between their 70s performances and now, other than the fact that they look different and nowadays people like them. If memory serves, I think the radio broadcast of RP was referred to as 'un-mixed' or words to that effect. However, I think it was the mix Iggy wanted to use & thought was going to be used, so it may only be 'un-mixed' in hindsight. I think I have a boot tape of that sucker someplace...

The show was cathartic. Iggy went into the audience numerous times, allowing plenty of people had the opportunity to dry-hump his leathery hide. Alas I didn't partake, as it was over 100 degrees in the Riviera that night, and many fat, 40-60+ year-old men decided to take off their shirts and give everyone around them sweaty-greasy-backhair brillo-pad-facial-scrubs. I maintained a safe 8 feet or so from the edge of the mosh pit.

The show was moved from 4,500 capacity Aragon to 2,500 Riviera, because they couldn't sell enough tickets. Iggy. And. The. Stooges. Could. Not. Sell. Enough. Tickets. We're all fucking doomed.
