primary literature on grime?

Hi hi,

Getting way into grime and UK hip hop in general. The question is - where is the best place for info about the scene and the individual MCs and such? Has there been any press coverage? I'm doing a bit of research on it for something academic I'm writing, and I am basically seeking to read all I can about it. So if anyone has any links to good info no matter the source, please advise.

Thanks

just read the grime threads on ilm. that's all you need pretty much.

I guess a more honed version of my question is - has there been much UK press coverage of grime, aside from Dizzee/Streets (both of whom I love)? If so, where is it coming from, and can I read it?

i wouldn't bother reading any uk press coverage of garage.

This is the kind of helpful and informative response you get on ILM, unfortunately. You might fare better posting your question here.

There was Deuce magazine for a while. I read it a bit, but it was written more from an insider's perspective. You should probably check out Simon Reynold's Blissblog and Tim Finney's Skykicking blog.

i imagine you'd get a similar response if you asked on dissensus to be honest. mainly because there has been little uk press coverage of grime worth reading.

deuce and rwd is alright though always seems a bit too much vibe-esque press release style. tim finney did a wicked round up of 2004 on skykicking. but seriously, the grime threads on ilm from the last 3 years or so are full of most of the best writing on grim and garage.

vice has a regular column if you're after printed press that is alright i suppose.

Yep these links are all good 'uns. They help clarify the scene for dumb outsiders like myself.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 14 March 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

fact?

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 March 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

expand re. fact.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 14 March 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

fact magazine.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 March 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes, that's the one for which Matty lad does a column.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 14 March 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

fact magazine is beautiful.

scg, Monday, 14 March 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

Where is the best place for dumb outsiders like myself to find out about the internal politics of grime? I was going to start a 'why does everyone hate Wiley?' thread as I've lost track on who's dissing who and why.

I know I shouldn't care really but this whole soap opera does seem kind of central to the music, in a weird way.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 14 March 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

the lush, rwd, 2sg and major fm forums are good for scurrilous street gossip. i think it's pretty obvious why everyone hates wiley though!

scg, Monday, 14 March 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

his album for a start

*ducks*

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 14 March 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

he ate all the pies!

i wouldn't say that it's central to the music, but the growing leyton/bow divide is getting pretty interesting, could become grime's queens vs bronx maybe. and i guess mcs having an actual personality to direct their subliminals at be it wiley or neeko or major ace or whoever makes for much more focused lyrics.

scg, Monday, 14 March 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

actually the e10/e3 beef thing isn't anywhere near as clearly defined as queens vs bronx or any new york area code beefs. it's still interesting though.

scg, Monday, 14 March 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

clearly defined as in it's not the whole areas going at each other, more just individual mcs who happen to be from those areas.

The RWD forum is great for so many reasons!

just adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

I find Wiley rather charming.

just adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Marcello Carlin is like the JME of ILX. Serious.

Thanks everyone for all the links and such. I'll get reading.

Another question. Is Wonder (Cap Back on Run the Road) white? Are there any other prominent white MCs, besides of course Streets?

thekingatnight (thekingatnight), Monday, 14 March 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

scratchy, danny weed & discarda from rolldeep, l-man from naa, some guy in essentials, can't remember his name and another guy in meridian. there's plenty more.

scg, Monday, 14 March 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

sorry, not essentials, east connection. work now :(

Grime in 2005

not sure how helpful these are really, it might be a bit impenetrable. still, at the very least will name some tracks to track down.

Wonder is mixed-race, I think. Plan B (the MC on Cap Back) is white.

just adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 March 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Slimzee is white, of course.

There was Deuce magazine for a while. I read it a bit, but it was written more from an insider's perspective.

Deuce is gone? Damn. They were a cheap and fairly reliable way to get UKG on disc over here.
