First Acts Revealed for Pitchfork's Intonation Festival

Rob Kleckner reports:
We report so much news that it's nice to break a story involving ourselves now and then. As previously reported, Pitchfork is curating the first annual Intonation Music Festival in Chicago. It will be held on Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17, at Pulaski Park. The event will feature up to 24 acts, including a DJ tent courtesy of Biz3. We are proud to announce the initial group of artists will be:

>>Confirmed artists:
The Decemberists
The Fiery Furnaces
Will Oldham (special DJ set)
Broken Social Scene
The Go! Team
Four Tet
Magnolia Electric Co.
The Wrens
A.C. Newman
The M's

The gates will open at noon each day, and there will be no advance tickets (which means no dealing with the evils of Ticketmaster or scalpers). Admission will be $10 at the door and certain proceeds will go to benefit the Chicago Park District's after-school music programs. The park is located at 1419 W. Blackhawk St. Stay tuned to Pitchfork and the websites below for more information and updates to the lineup.

I like it...

poortheatre (poortheatre), Saturday, 9 April 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

What a dull lineup!

The Scottish Restauranteer (ex machina), Saturday, 9 April 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Will Oldham (special DJ set)

eh...?

stephen morris (stephen morris), Saturday, 9 April 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

haha will oldham DJ set!

crosspost

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 9 April 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

it's like one of the funnier lines from the jess Vs. ethan basement jaxx leak thread.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 9 April 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

certain proceeds

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 9 April 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

For $10 I'd say that lineup is really impressive. Hell, I'd likely pay more than that to see some of these acts on their own.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

WHERE IS TEH GAME???

miccio (miccio), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm waiting for Pitchfork: The Coffee (served in Starbucks near you).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm waiting for some sort of Pitchfork year-end book that has the best record reviews from the past year, and loads of other content, so well into the future I can have a record of my favorite Pitchfork moments. That would be so rad.

Mickey (modestmickey), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Mmm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

zzzzzz. same bullshit festival happens everywhere else in this country.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

"Dude, you going to Intonation this year?"
"No, brah, I'm so bummed. I gotta work on my thesis. I hear it's gonna be rad though."
"No shit dude. The Furnaces are gonna play! Blueberry Boat got like a 9.3 or something."
"Yeah, and one of the Decemberists' new songs got 5 stars in 'We Are the World.'"
"No shit. My 'Holland Oats' tee just came in the mail. I'm so stoked."
"Yeah, have fun bro. Lemme know how it goes."
"Sure thing. Rock on, dude!"

PB, Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Most Penn students would find this line-up to be irrelevant. Where's Taking Back Sunday?

ng, Saturday, 9 April 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Where are The Shins, Ben Folds, or Snoop Dogg?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 9 April 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm waiting for Pitchfork: The Coffee (served in Starbucks near you).

Followed immediately by AMG: The Coffee Mug (available in a Barnes & Nobles' Starbucks near you).

Eggzakly Huh? (Zach), Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Followed by ILM brand mail-order X-ray specs and fake dog doo.

PB, Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

Hooray!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 April 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

will people be getting high during this festival? or do indie kids get high at shows at all?

JD from CDepot, Sunday, 10 April 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

The name of the festival is funny, like are these bands going to play in tune for a special one-time-only event?

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 10 April 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm hoping that all the bands have to play in just intonation.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 10 April 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm excited about this. Even if I'm not in love with some of the bands, it's really hard to beat $10 a day. Stand around in the sun, watch some indie rock, sure. And there are more performers TBA.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 10 April 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

I like several of those bands. But still...of all the festival lineups, that's the Pitchforkiest.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 10 April 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

well, duh, that's kinda the point

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 10 April 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm guessing the more standard indie-kid practice is to get high at home before heading to the show. Or eat brownies. All those infamous guys standing in the backs of shows with their arms crossed are actually just running out of steam: they were really into the opener, but now they'd kind of just like some Gatorade and a place to sit down.

nabiscothingy, Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Indie-kids militant about music taste and tied together by the internet+ music festival= Altamont 2005

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 11 April 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

well, duh, that's kinda the point

I know, I know. It's just always nice when people aren't entirely predictable.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 11 April 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...

What happened to this?

From PFM the other day:

"Advance ticket sales will go on sale this Wednesday, May 18. The cost per ticket will be a mere $15 per day, and a limited number of $22 two-day passes will be available as well."

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

zzzzzz. same bullshit festival happens everywhere else in this country.

This is an odd comment. It does? I've never seen a weekend festival look remotely like this one.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

john - the move from pulaski to union park, which is 3x as big, necessitated the slight increase in price. also, the advance tix are mostly to ensure out-of-towners they can get in. I don't think it will sell out in advance or anything like that! I'd guess there will be lots of walk-up tix. (yeah, fiery furnaces cancelled all of their summer dates)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

(Don't worry, it's just a little constipation, they'll be back in fall.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

is will oldham going to play mostly electrohouse stuff, or more "vintage" electroclash?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

-- maria tessa sciarrino (mari...), April 9th, 2005. (theoreticalgirl) (link)

guess who's been assigned to attend this thing? yours truly. "oh, the irony" doesnt cover it.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 3 July 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

i still disagree with you.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 3 July 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I'd pay $10 to see Jean Grae's DJ set.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Sunday, 3 July 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

i still agree with what i said, even though i am excited to attend. i feel like most festivals of an indie variety have this cog mentality. plug in band x if band y is elsewhere. coachella, bumbershoot, siren, intonation, etc blah. all the same, essentially.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 3 July 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

however, this is what made me psyched about intonation festival:

Chicago Childrens Museum presents "Vinyl Art" Family Activity at Intonation

We've got good news for all of you music fans with families of your own! First off, admission to the festival is free for kids under 10. Better yet, the Chicago Children's Museum will be holding a Vinyl Art Workshop for kids at the Festival from 1-5 PM Saturday and Sunday Afternoons. Using vintage LP's and various art materials, kids will work with professional artists to design their own album covers for a favorite band, real or imaginary. Bring the kids and make Intonation the musical family outing of the Summer.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 3 July 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

awesome.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 3 July 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

i really hope they let adults play too!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 3 July 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

i remember getting high in a porta john during kid koalas set opening up for radiohead.

kephm (kephm), Sunday, 3 July 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

What in god's name is deerhoof doing in this dungheap?

carbon (carbon), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

?

Deerhoof seems to fit the general aesthetic of the fest, to me, at least.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Maybe in the sense that John Coltrane could fit into a bill with Kenny G.

carbon (carbon), Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand all the negativity. Is it just because of the Pichfork connection? 10 bucks for all those bands? I've paid double that to see a couple of those acts playing on their own. I wish I was able to go.

everything, Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, 15 bux - still a bargain in my opinion.

everything, Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Budweiser
Bud Light
Rating: 10.0

Absolutely essential in these postmodern, pre-apocalyptic, Hades-hot times. The experience and emotions tied to drinking Bud are like witnessing the stillborn birth of a child while simultaneously having the opportunity to see her play in the afterlife on Imax. Breathing people made this beer! A bargain at any price; you pay $7.75.

PB, Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i don't really get all the hate for this thing... Pitchfork or not, any chance i can see that many bands for $22 (price of a two-day pass) within 5 miles of my apartment isn't a bad thing at all. i have a feeling this would be much more loved by ILMers if it wasn't Pitchfork doing all the promotion.

jonviachicago, Thursday, 14 July 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

QUIT DRINKING HATORADE

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

No doubt. I'd totally go to this if it were in Mpls, and it's a pretty good bill of some current indie rock...this is just PFork hate, as others have stated. Also, the ticket price isn't bad at all....makes it pretty painless cuz I could go to see some stuff I'd know I'd like (Deerhoof and Les Savy Fav) and prolly get lucky with someone I haven't heard...I really want to check out Four Tet and Dungen.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

There's totally some boring bands on here but WTF even if you went to see Deerhoof by themselves at the Empty Bottle it would cost $15.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Four Tet is also playing a free set at Reckless in Belmont Friday at 5:30. SO LIKE EVEN CHEAPER!

Gavin, Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Except Four Tet is one of the boring acts Nick is talking about.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

jaymc OTM. great albums, snoozefest live. that's the scheduled time to stock up on food and maybe hit the record fair.

jonviachicago, Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Add Deerhoof to that list with Sleater-Kinney, too. And Xiu Xiu.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

I like Deerhoof and SK live though? Deerhoof was crazy energetic when I saw them on the Apple O tour...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh, Xiu Xiu is free at Reckless on Monday.

Gavin, Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Free sounds as fair a price as any for xiu xiu.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Attention Intonation attendees:
INTONATION FEST Get-Together July 15-17 (Sorry for extra Chicago thread)

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 July 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

this isn't going to sell out either day - right? i was hoping to get to the festival later in the day (pretty much to catch go!team) and i don't want to have to wait in line for tickets four hours before that...

natedey (ndeyoung), Friday, 15 July 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

MUSIC FESTIVALS SHOULD ONLY OCCUR IF THE BANDS I LIKE ARE PLAYING IN THEM

MUSIC FESTIVALS SHOULD NOT OCCUR IF I DO NOT APPROVE OF THEIR HOSTS

ALL MUSIC FESTIVALS ARE THE SAME, REGARDLESS OF CONTENT, EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT ACTUALLY THE SAME

I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE CONDUCT AND LIFESTYLE OF MY FELLOW MUSIC FESTIVAL PATRONS, ESPECIALLY IF IT DIVERGES FROM MY OWN CONDUCT AND LIFESTYLE

THAT IS ALL

BURRITO, Friday, 15 July 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Nate - PL said it won't sell out.

deej.., Saturday, 16 July 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

I disagree, I don't think I would find it interesting at all.
