This was a post I meant to do on my own blog forever ago, well before "One Thing" came out and answered the question definitively, but here's my first 12:

1) Beyonce
2) Rachel Stevens
3) Madonna
4) Kelis
5) Annie
6) Gwen Stefani
7) Ciara
8) Jaguar Wright
9) Angie Stone
10)Mary J
11)Jill Scott
12)That Little Girl at the End of the Song (assuming that's not J. Lo. pitchshifted, in which case she should've sung the whole song that way anyway)

Whattayougot?

"Get Right" by Jennifer Lopez....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Boy, am I glad I missed THAT discussion. Yikes.

Ashanti?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Ok am I the only person who thinks that "One Thing" is more annoying than "Get Right"? At least I know J. Lo. can't do better.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

I hope so (and am pretty sure, yeah).

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

I know! WTF is with everybody putting "One Thing" as their no. 1 single? I thought the problem with "Get Right" was the chirpy vocal, not the lack of a Gene Krupa splice.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

Have we so surrendered to the fact that yelping chihuahuas are the norm that we'll go gaga for the one that yelps loudest?

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Is it used in a really sentimental moment in Switch? Is it sort of a "New Slang" thing?

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

sorry, Hitch.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

The sample in Amerie is much cooler and less annoying, and sounds a lot fresher--no song in hip-hop sounds like that right now.

And personally, I think her vocal performance is really one of the greatest in R&B this decade--she nails it 100%. She just sounds so unbelievably delirious--the second verse is my favorite, the "memories just keep ringing bells" part. It's invigorating. I don't remember a single thing about the verses to "Get Right"

And the chorus just explodes in a sort of continuous joy--whereas who cares what the fuck J. Lo is singing about on the chorus? It's all about that sax hook, which is pretty grating to begin with.

also, the video >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the "Get Right" clip

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

jesus, my last dentist apppointment >>>>>>>> the "get right" clip

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

doubtful (J. Lo's video doesn't use that fucking nausea-flavored toothpaste), but your heart is in the right place.

("Turn Off Da Lights" = still #1)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

ok we are on different planets, evidently. both tracks haven't done diddly for me

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I don't like the Mario or Bobby Valentino tracks either.

It should still say something about the state of R&B this year that there are this many potentially great songs to disagree on (without even mentioning "Oh," "Don't Cha," "Okay," "Girlfight," etc.)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

My fave female-sung R&B hit this year is pretty easily "Goin' Crazy."

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, that's great too.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

Anthony, please get one ear for vocals; calling out Amerie as worse than J.Lo is way beyond "personal taste" territory and smack dab in "willfully and painfully ignorant" land.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Scott Stapp would have sounded better than Jay To The Low on "Get Right."

billstevejim, Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

I didn't say they were worse than J. Lo's, I said they were more annoying. Tom Waits has worse pipes than Amerie but has some less annoying songs.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

this thread title should also be amended to include "100 people who would've sounded better as the guest rapper on "Get Right (Remix)" instead of Fabolous"

I really think it could be the weakest guest verse I've ever heard.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, I'm pretty grateful for its inclusion myself.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

even his intro is so fucking lame.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

It's highly possible I'm just grateful to hear someone over the hook that isn't J. Lo.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

I need to scare up a copy of that Usher outtake that uses it. I missed it when a bunch of blogs posted it.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 April 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

The easiest way to make a bad song worse is to put Fabolous's inane mumbling in it. His popularity thoroughly mystifies me.

But to get back to the countdown:
13) Kylie
14) Donna Lewis
15) Bryan Ferry

I had somehow missed "Get Right," so I downloaded it the other day. And though I hardly EVER do this, it annoyed me so much I trashed it right away.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

i think 'Get Right' is okay, tho it's no 'Play'. '1 Thing' I find strangely irresistable.
