what does ILM think of Pink Martini?

yes yes, they are awfully adult contemporary but I recently read about how they've sold something like half a million cds of their first album and yet I've never seen any real evidence of a press push, or reviews, or seen them on anyone's top 10 lists. I think they are good at what they do, it's just not totally my bag, but I'm curious what everyone here thinks and how they managed to sell SO much and yet have so little recognition. strange.

my mom likes them, they get a lot of lite-jazz radio play I think. They are easy to swallow and the Oregonian newspaper eats em up and is on their year-end lists. That's all I know.

funny you should say that my mom is the person who gave me their CD. i guess they've cornered the Mom market. Just strange I've never seen anything about them on here.

Pink Martini - C/D?

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 22 April 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Ahem, "a" smartass.

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 22 April 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

oops. I did a search in messages and that didn't show up
sorry!

Yeah, I've found searching the thread titles gets better results.

My opinion of Pink Martini remains the same though: "dangerous music for old people."

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 22 April 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

haha. I love how soothing world lounge music is DANGEROUS to them . hah.
they seem pleasant enough . i find them unoffensive but also unintriguing. their success is remarkable though.

First I heard of them was through my Mom. The Mom-est band of all time?

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

this could be a good thread!

breezy, Friday, 22 April 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

But how do ILMers' Mom's compare to the average?

Is there something genetic about your attraction to ILM?

phil jones (interstar), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

And anyway, surely the Mom-est band of all time is Mom-us :-)

phil jones (interstar), Friday, 22 April 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

my mom has horrible taste with music. her having a pink martini cd is probably because she tripped on it or something and even then the best anyone can say about them is that they are inoffensive.
I Love You MoM!

First there was Dadrock. Now there's Momrock.

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 22 April 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

the question is what's worse, dadrock or momrock?

breezy, Friday, 22 April 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

Portland's worst band ever . . . worse than Nu Shooz and Quarterflash combined.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 23 April 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

worst band ever is a bit harsh. I think they've just got an aqquired taste. ie: my mom's taste. but I think my mom isn't totally tasteless. seriously. she knows relatively good stuff and rejects the utter crap. mostly she just likes really , insanely , oldskool scottish folk

i'd never be motivated enuf to get off the couch and go buy an album of theirs but perfectly happy to have 'em on in the background.

H (Heruy), Saturday, 23 April 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

Well, they're back with their 3rd album, aren't they?

What IS the point of redoing old genres (30's, 40's, 50's) without adding something of your own time? (see also: The Pipettes, Christina Aguilera, The Puppini Sisters)

They were on Later with Jools Holland just now (god he's annoying) and there, right next to Pink Martini, were The White Stripes, who are inspired by all kinds of old music, but they're great and now and fresh and yeah!
