For example, Phish and Grateful Dead are two of my favorites to listen to, but to watch they are quite possibly the most boring bands to have ever existed.
Another example: Sonic Youth either goes way too far into noise or falls back on the same old formula of sonic-blast guitar dynamics, discomforting insider lyrics and crappy neobeat poetry.
Example three: Frank Zappa could assemble some of the best musicians to create some of the best improv and flawless executions. His ability to compose and his studio wizardry allowed him to create some interesting material, however he too often went to extremes in the interest of artistic statements or innovation and really could have used an editor to keep his ego in check.
Etc.

VU - despite their ability to create a heavy and oppressive atmosphere, which is an interesting talent, they were halfassed musicians and fucking boring much of the time, which I suppose could arguably contribute to the atmosphere, but they only managed to make a couple of good albums and unless you're clinically depressed, that shit grows tiresome eventually.
Joy Division - some of it is a bit too aimless and airy. Also, the guy killed himself, thus unleashing New Order on us all.

It's interesting that two of a band's four albums ended up being good (in your opinion) even though the group were "halfassed musicians and fucking boring much of the time."

I can't for the life of me understand why Pole chose to do those half-baked undie rap tracks on his latest LP.
Dead Prez' new LP was already very short, yet they managed to put lots of useless filler on it (three versions of the same song, pointless intros and outros), thus leaving it with only a handful of good songs.
Nas shouldn't try to produce tracks.

XTC sucks in that it took almost ten years for them to fulfill their artistic potential.
Depeche Mode sucks in that they released the U2-wannabe "Songs Of Faith And Devotion" album before once again realising that a synthpop band is what they was and should stay
The Beatles sucks in that they didn't just get rid of John Lennon in 1968, when he had no interest in providing anything of quality to the group anymore anyway, and seemingly was just busy being in love with a Japanese artist.

R.E.M. sucks because they didn't have the grace to call it quits when Bill Berry left the band.
Sleater-Kinney sucks because their good stuff all kind of sounds the same, and their experimental stuff isn't good.
The Dismemberment Plan didn't suck, but they did unleash Travis Morrisson's solo career upon the world.

To be fair, they've made three in 16 years. And Apple Venus Vol. 1 isn't even "decent"? That seems pretty harsh...
