Your favorite band sucks how?

Not necessarily your favorite of favorites, but a band you really like.

For example, Phish and Grateful Dead are two of my favorites to listen to, but to watch they are quite possibly the most boring bands to have ever existed.

Another example: Sonic Youth either goes way too far into noise or falls back on the same old formula of sonic-blast guitar dynamics, discomforting insider lyrics and crappy neobeat poetry.

Example three: Frank Zappa could assemble some of the best musicians to create some of the best improv and flawless executions. His ability to compose and his studio wizardry allowed him to create some interesting material, however he too often went to extremes in the interest of artistic statements or innovation and really could have used an editor to keep his ego in check.

Etc.

Er, that Zappa was a bit too flattering. I meant it to read like, "Yeah, he was great, but half of his material sucks."

Lemonade Salesman (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 30 April 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

I hate the music I listen to. I only listen to it for trivial knowledge that might help me get a handle on what critics like.

The Velvet Underground
Joe Meek
Joy Division

Honey Pie, Saturday, 30 April 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

That would be funny if it were true.

Lemonade Salesman (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 30 April 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I can tell you what sucks about two of those three bands (and I like them both quite a bit)!

VU - despite their ability to create a heavy and oppressive atmosphere, which is an interesting talent, they were halfassed musicians and fucking boring much of the time, which I suppose could arguably contribute to the atmosphere, but they only managed to make a couple of good albums and unless you're clinically depressed, that shit grows tiresome eventually.

Joy Division - some of it is a bit too aimless and airy. Also, the guy killed himself, thus unleashing New Order on us all.

Lemonade Salesman (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 30 April 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

The Smashing Pumpkins are headed by Billy Corgan, the biggest egomaniac ever to pick up a guitar. Everybody hates him. All of the bands mentioned above have nothing on him when it comes to self-indulgence -- have you heard "Glass and the Ghost Children"? Their final couple of records would contain many masterpieces were they not buried under layer upon layer of studio schlock, allowing only Billy's nasal whine to escape.

Roadkill Bingo (Roadkill Bingo), Saturday, 30 April 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

In the 70s, Genesis made the best music that has ever been made. However, I will never ever be able to forgive them for completely dreadful later career stuff such as "I Can't Dance", "Hold On My Heart" and "In Too Deep".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 30 April 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Metallica was the first metal group i listened too that made me love the electric guitar. i've always loved their music and the way they put their albums together. i despise their new bassist, rob whatever his name is. i cant help thinking that he doesnt fit in in any way and James and them were wrong for letting him join the band, no matter how talented he is.
Also, that whole napster thing was kinda confusing, but i can understand how frustrating it can be to find out peolpe are downloading all your unfinished songs.

It's interesting that two of a band's four albums ended up being good (in your opinion) even though the group were "halfassed musicians and fucking boring much of the time."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 1 May 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

sleater-kinney suck because they take themselves too seriously and their lyrics come off quite self-righteous.

di, Sunday, 1 May 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

Honestly criticize your favorite bands / artists

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 1 May 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

Mouse on Mars should never have added vocals to their music, it's not their piece of cake.

I can't for the life of me understand why Pole chose to do those half-baked undie rap tracks on his latest LP.

Dead Prez' new LP was already very short, yet they managed to put lots of useless filler on it (three versions of the same song, pointless intros and outros), thus leaving it with only a handful of good songs.

Nas shouldn't try to produce tracks.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 1 May 2005 07:26 (twenty years ago)

If I was friends with Dean Wareham, I'd get drunk, and then use my intoxication as an excuse to slap him really hard.. and then take his girlfriend out to a steak dinner.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Sunday, 1 May 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

Mr. Hitchcock, what the hell kind of name is Robyn for a man?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 1 May 2005 08:28 (twenty years ago)

Killing Joke sucks in the following departments:
(1) Live sound is often shit
(2) Not nearly prolific enough
(3) Too stubborn and pig-headed to play nice with record companies, thus much of their material has been lorded over by record executives with bruised egos and axes to grind. This is supposedly being addressed, but the process is a slow one.

Cop Shoot Cop sucks in that...
(1) They broke up

The Strangler suck in that....
(1) Hugh left the band.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 1 May 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Yes made some really, really bad albums, the fallout maybe from putting together some great, great songs. I can't listen to their first two albums; Tales from Topographic Oceans, aside from the second movement, is a mess; Going for the One is bad news except "Wonderous Stories"; Tormato is so enervated it's heartbreaking; Big Generator, ABWH, Union, Talk feature some good songs scattered between them, outnumbered by dreck; and I can't listen to either of the Keys to Ascensions, Close Your Eyes, or Magnification.

deleuze, Sunday, 1 May 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

The Buzzcocks suck in that....actually, no they don't.
The Wedding Present suck in that.....well, they need their old rhythm section back.
Firewater sucks in that.....Tod is in Thailand indefinetely teaching English.
DEVO suck in that.....no, they don't.
COIL suck in that....Jhonn Balance died right before I started to really appreciate their music.
Iggy Pop sucks in that.....he hasn't made a credible, worthwhile, listenable album in about a decade (and I'm being generous).
Kiss sucks in that.....what ever semblance of dignity they once had has been sold.
AC/DC sucks in that....Angus is now bald.
Iron Maiden sucks in that....they haven't given Janek Gheers (sp?) the keys to the fuckin' street.
Julian Cope sucks in that.....he's lost his marbles again, albeit in a not quite as entertaing way, and he apparently has shunned the concept of making music with hooks or memorable tunes in them.
Gavin Friday sucks in that....he hasn't released any music in far too long.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 1 May 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I *liked* the Sunn O))) collab!

I don't see any problem with that judgement.

Why is that interesting?

david bowie: should've stopped at let's dance.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 1 May 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

A few more of mine:

XTC sucks in that it took almost ten years for them to fulfill their artistic potential.

Depeche Mode sucks in that they released the U2-wannabe "Songs Of Faith And Devotion" album before once again realising that a synthpop band is what they was and should stay

The Beatles sucks in that they didn't just get rid of John Lennon in 1968, when he had no interest in providing anything of quality to the group anymore anyway, and seemingly was just busy being in love with a Japanese artist.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 May 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

XTC sucks in that it took almost ten years for them to fulfill their artistic potential.

XTC sucks in that they haven't made a decent album since Oranges & Lemons.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 May 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

John Coltrane had almost NO sense of humour and was, indeed, sometimes guilty of "practicing onstage". (Would I purchase a 3CD set of him LITERALLY practicing scales for 4 hours? Yeah, probably.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 2 May 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

U2 sucks because they're practically physically incapable of turning the bombast down, because they keep preaching at me in their lyrics, and because sometimes you just wanna smack Bono.

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Monday, 2 May 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

A few more:

R.E.M. sucks because they didn't have the grace to call it quits when Bill Berry left the band.

Sleater-Kinney sucks because their good stuff all kind of sounds the same, and their experimental stuff isn't good.

The Dismemberment Plan didn't suck, but they did unleash Travis Morrisson's solo career upon the world.

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Monday, 2 May 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Depeche Mode sucks in that they released the U2-wannabe "Songs Of Faith And Devotion" album before once again realising that a synthpop band is what they was and should stay

Spot on - I've always said the same.

Jez (Jez), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Sadly, The Pet Shop Boys are boring live. I mean, you really can't tell if it's Chris Lowe on stage or just a guy from the soundcheck crew.

daavid (daavid), Monday, 2 May 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

xp. Robyn/in is only a gurls name abroad. I've never met or known of any female British Robins. (Correct me, but it's certainly not common) Ye ancient nursery rhyme/song 'Who killed Cock Robin? should give you a clue.
I've met Robin Hitchcock though. He was drunk and for an opening remark asked me if I wanted to write a Viv Stanshall biography. And, no, he didn't mistake me for anyone else (like a writer capable of completing a biography).

Teenage Fanclub- low expectations too easily achieved.

snotty moore, Monday, 2 May 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

XTC sucks in that they haven't made a decent album since Oranges & Lemons.

To be fair, they've made three in 16 years. And Apple Venus Vol. 1 isn't even "decent"? That seems pretty harsh...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

It's a harsh world.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

"Nonsuch" was one of the best albums ever, and the two "Apple Venus" albums were both great as well. XTC haven't made a bad, or even average, album since "The Big Express"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

The Fall sucks because Mark E. Smith is kind of a contemptful jerk. And only a handful of their albums are good in their entirety.

The Smiths are sometimes trite and always self-indulgent.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

XTC sucks in that they haven't made a decent album since Oranges & Lemons.

Don't forget they suck the most because of "Dear God" and "Peter Pumpkinhead!"

Leon Snodgrass (Eleventy-Twelve), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

Funkadelic sucked for... uh... the tendency to create 11-minute songs that would've been better at 4. ("Maggot Brain" not included.)

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

For once, Geir and I are agreeing here...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

Manic Street Preachers suck in that their lyrics are preposterous and James Dean Bradfield often shoehorns words into lyrical passages by putting the emphasis on the wrong syllable. But I loooooove them
