2004 was a good year for me on the moldy oldy front:

Rolling 2004 Vinyl Thread

so far this year, eh, not so much. but there is still time...

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 1 May 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

and oh yeah, the idea behind last year's thread goes for this one too:

Recent purchases. Good reissues. bad reissues. new records on vinyl. new records on vinyl only. great packaging. bad packaging. stellar sound. horrible sound. good deals. scary stories. anecdotes about that smelly guy who keeps telling you he's gonna give you all his records because he has no use for them anymore but he never does because he knows that it drives you insane. great recent hauls from library/charity/boot/tag/yard/sidewalk/thrift. unbelievable ebay prices and auctions you would like to share with others by providing links. mono. stereo. what are you listening to a lot? what do you want? how much is it worth? obsessions. the one that got away. conventions. turntables. the japanese. great shops you have discovered lately. sell/trade anything lately? imports. boots. test pressings. the ache in your back. best labels. worst labels. rip-offs. charlatans. The Charlatans. The Charlatans U.K. mold. rot. sun damage. split flexis. split seams. recent news. what's hot. what's not. trends. forecasts. news from the front. no mp3s allowed. no cds. no tapes.

I got a NM copy of the Bee Gees' "Cucumber Castle", and I kinda like having Barry dominate shit

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 1 May 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

woo! yeah! yeah.

Male Stripper (Man2Man/Man Parrish) 12", Human League Love & Dancing LP, 75p each, ish, from Quiggins in Liverpool (this may have been on the 2004/2005 cusp, perhaps)

Human League Hysteria lovely gatefold LP delight, from car-booting sister, 20p (allegedly)

Lonnie Gordon Happenin' All Over Again, 12", £2.49, and SAW Hit Factory Vol. 2 LP, 99p, both from Oxfam in Leeds, hurrah yes.

This weekend: Girls On Top Greatest Hits LP, from Boomkat, price = not astonishing and tremendous (but worth every penny for Aaliyah/OMD action on side B)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 1 May 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Just picked up a box of 60s & (mostly 70s) gospel soul LPs. Will listen to them tonight, but it all looks pretty good. Gospel Soulettes, Larnelle Harris, Jay Caldwell & the Gospel Ambassadors, Dr. C.J. Johnson. Some are in shitty shape, but will no doubt cause me to feel the spirit burn.

jared, Sunday, 1 May 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and a really good Jackie De Shannon french EP from '63 called "Guess Who" that ended up in Pennsylvania somehow. Great shape and it has a really nice early 60s popcorn/soul number co-authored by Jackie called "Just Like in the Movies" that I can't see as being on any CD release.

Hooked up my turntable last week after having it nowhere for the last 5-10 years.

Nektar's "Remember the Future" was one of the first things onto it. And it sounded excellent with its prog-into-boogie rock two-piece opera. Next up, Jethro Tull's "Living in the Past" which I'm told was eventually remastered and reissued adequately for the CD age but which I have never actually seen anywhere. Who cares? The vinyl, even with pop and crackle is still fine for what I wanted. "Bogenboom," "Bouree," "Dharma for One," the part where Anderson goes "Oo-yeh, oo-yeh, stamps his feet and Barre comes in with the finale power chords.

George Smith, Sunday, 1 May 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I pwned a copy of Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, the new Detroit Cobras LP, and British Steel by Judas Priest.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Sunday, 1 May 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I found an original English copy of Man's Be Good to Yourself at Least Once a Day LP with the foldout map inside in a thrift store the other day, but I haven't listened to it yet. Do you guys like Man?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 1 May 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Man rules. Mean-sounding jam band. "Spunk Rock" is excellent in studio and live versions. You have to find it on vinyl. "Keep On Crinting" and "Bananas" -- also great -- from the red cover with the live shot gatefold album. "Slow Motion," the album with the artwork of Alfred E. Neuman that had to be cropped to keep them out of legal trouble.

juana molina "tres cosas" and "segundo" - both double LPs that are still available via domino, but not for long
linda rich "theres more to living than i know so far" - cheap because the sleeve was damaged
kpm library "seeds of time" - 49p in a charity shop!
edan "beauty and the beat" - favourite LP of this year, just awesome
"learn how to play folk guitar" book & LP set from the 60s - £1 bargain!
sore throat "disgrace to the corpse of sid" - 101 tracks on one LP for 49p, how could i say no??

zappi (joni), Sunday, 1 May 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Got a nice haul this morning at local flea market including but not limited to:
Music Machine - "Turn on" (Original Sound, 66)
-had a beat to hell copy for years but got this much cleaner one as a replacement.

Jean Jacques Perrey - "Moog Indigo" (Vanguard, 70)
-Moog records fucking rule - end of discussion.

Rufus Harley - "Kings / Queens" (Atlantic, 70)
-Jazz bagpipe records fucking rule etc

Morton Feldman/Earle Brown - "Feldman-Brown" (Time, 63)
-I'm totally ignorant when it comes to this scene, but I knew Feldman and Brown were Cage cotemporaries and this stuff doesn't show up often in hell holes like flea markets so I couldn't pass it up. Anyone care to shed some light on what I will hear when I play?

Dr. K's Blues Band - "S/T" (World Pacific, 68)
-Ex Bluesbreaker + piano + hairy overweight pianist reaching out shirtless to embrace me on the front cover = good times

jared, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

oh, and C/D: those stupid plastic baggy inner sleeves companies used back in the early 60s?

I am firmly in the Dud camp on that one.

jared, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

(Hi Skot! If this were the Rolling 2005 Cassette Thread, I'd say thanxxxx for the tape I just got from you and am about to go play, but since it's not I won't, since i remember what happened when i diverted the Rolling 2004 Vinyl) Blow Monkeys: I was just thinking about them! All the Man love too! How is solo Deke, George? I've got Iceberg around here somewhere but haven't played it. I think they still play sometimes but I din't know the lineup. What with the foot and all, I haven't got to the vinyl oasis lately, but did receive 2 good vinyl promos, Dred Foole's A Long Losing Battle With Eloquence and Intimance (Yes, Eloquence and Intimance win! There's a little bit of bad vocalese, but only on the last track)Also, Lee Ann Womack's There's More Where That Came From (a complex album about sex, disguised as retro, hence the vinyl, which the beefcake of her eye is becoming mesmerized by in the first video)

oh man, the Feldman side of this is amazing!! the first Feldman I ever heard, IIRC. It is beautiful and spacious. I have the Mainstream issue, same music. Can't remember a thing about the Brown though.

Deke's Iceberg is good; I think I liked it better than Man's Slow Motion, which was pretty much the end for those guys I think. but in general I'm a huge Man freak. in jam mode anyway. The first two are quaint and likeable, but I don't reach for 'em very often..
