No, not the band mentioned in this thread. Mu-"Let's Get Sick" - any good then?

actually the one Broheems/Stormy thought the thread in question was refering to. i read the Unterberger books and they had a whole chapter on him, although that was years ago and i don't remember what they said. also, i bought one of his albums about 6yrs ago and wasn't really into it, but my tastes have changed conciderably since then.

so good or not, and what's it like and which albums should i check out? i just found a used copy of a cd, but i let it sit there because i wasn't sure i'd want it

It's all pretty uneven, but the best Fapardokly/HMS Bounty and MU stuff is all really good. You'd definitely like him, JaXoN, and I'd recommend just buying them in order.

Although the best Fapardokly song (by far) is the on the CD with the Unterberger book so maybe you can skip that and move right onto the HMS Bounty and MU albums and then move back. They're all on Sundazed and relatively cheap (although I think the MU one is a little pricier cuz it is a double-disc.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

alex, you surprise me when you show up in certain threads (like this) when i think you're a jungle/grime type guy (i know your tastes are much bigger than that).

Oh I love psych (although perhaps not as much as I used to.) I just burned myself out on it, plus the reissue market went so crazy for a while that I keep feeling like EVERYTHING was essential and there was too much between that and new stuff and then I realized that I had a bunch of records that just sounded like Byrds/Pretty Things/Love knock-offs which were all good, but I just ended up putting on the Byrds/Pretty Things/Love when I was in that mood anyway.

i think i'll go back and pick up that cd after work. it was only 3.99, but it said it was scratched but guaranteed. it was a single disc that looked like this. so i'm assuming it's the first album. i just wanted to do a little research before i picked it up

Hmmn. The thing I have that has that cover is a 2CD Sundazed thing I think. Maybe it got split up. That's the first Mu album though yeah and $4 is a good deal.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that the one with the Magic Band guitarist on it?

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, the MU album has him, I believe.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

alex, so would you say this stuff is boogie blues rock, CSNY california psychfolk type stuff, heavy psych rock, psych-pop, or something completely different?

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Slightly kookie California psych-folk stuff.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The later stuff (the MU stuff) gets a little blue-sier and a little root-sier too, but so was California psych-folk stuff so yeah.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

In addition to Fapardokly, HMS Bounty, and MU (all of which are, though inconsistent, really inspired at points), I would also suggest Merrell's solo album Maui, which is very very hippie and also uneven, but contains my fave MF track, "I Saw Your Photograph." It's on the 2cd Mu thing too, but in a not-as-good version.

Anybody ever give a listen to the Exiles stuff? Is there anything to differentiate it from the mass of 60's surf rock (ie is it particularly well-done or anything)?

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"Is that the one with the Magic Band guitarist on it?"

jeff cotton is on the fapardokly stuff too. him and M.F. went way back. Till Beefheart came along and kidnapped him! some of the fapardokly stuff is merrell & the exiles stuff with jeff and john french (i think) too.

"Anybody ever give a listen to the Exiles stuff?"

so, anyway, my post above kinda answers this question too. if you have heard the fapardokly album you have heard some exiles stuff.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw an original of the Fapardokly album the other day. Guy at the store was telling me that someone was selling it on behalf of Merrell, who apparently has some health issue he's dealing with.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't his first band, the impacts, do the first version of wipe out? i can't remember that story. his interviews are great. the one in ugly things especially.

How much does the LP go for these days? I imagine the CD reissue must have knocked down that price a little.

They wanted $500 for it at the store.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I have this one and could never get into it.

http://home.clara.net/froy/space/images/reck4cd.jpg

Is the Sundazed reissue the same thing? I like Fapardokly much better though I admittedly haven't listened to the MU again for a few years.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 5 May 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I have the two MU reissues on Reckless. They are pretty great but yeah I haven't pulled them out in a long while either. Fapardokly was his best, toughest group. but the HMS Bounty stuff is good too, if a bit more sunny. Never actually heard the solo albums.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 5 May 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

so i picked it up, it's The First Album. i've only listened to the first song so far, but it really sound a lot like Manassas. both in his gruff Still's rockin voice and the slide guitar.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 5 May 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

is there lots of slide on Manassas? Maybe I should pick that up! Never heard the whole thing.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 5 May 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna have to listen to my old tape of Mu again. I wasn't very into them when those Reckless albums came out.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 5 May 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

is there lots of slide on Manassas? Maybe I should pick that up! Never heard the whole thing.

there's slide (or lapsteel) on almost every single song. and i don't think finding it will put a big ol burden on your wallet (it's probably cheaper than a soda)

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 5 May 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, I meant has anybody given a good listen to the Imacts stuff, not the Exiles stuff.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 5 May 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

and by that, I of course mean Impacts

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 5 May 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

i am so psyched i picked this up. it just keeps getting better and better. some of the more soulful tracks remind me of tim buckley. 'Eternal Thirst' starts off as a funky blues soul track and ends up as a 6 minute tribal drum break with meditational chanting on top.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 5 May 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

In general, I think all of the afore-mentioned records are worth a listen if they can be obtained cheaply. They evolve from a more popsyke sound to a more proggish sound as time goes by, and Cotton's guitar work (especially the slide parts) is primo. That said, they probably aren't deserving of the collectors furor that has driven the prices up into the hundreds of dollars.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Well that holds true for almost every hard-to-find record ever though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Heh, I mentioned that Sundazed record in yet another "MU" thread just last week! I really like that record a lot. Great bass clarinet - Jeff Cotton can really PLAY the thing, unlike Beefheart(who was more of an inspired amateur.)
