He's always been on ILM hand to provide a witty quip and a blast of racially dubious politics, but what are Geir's top five moments?

That thing with the trucker hat and the soiled couch was pretty great.

the one where he said African music is not "music".

Obv the best post was the one where he revealed that his slsk folder was filled with hip hop haha.

the one where he said that john cage produced absolutely nothing of value ever. right on!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

oh, and of course all the ones where he praises travis and coldplay. i likes 'em!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

while I do not condone Geir-hating (which impulse seems to inform most Geir-specific threads), I must say that the Geir's Soulseek Folder thread was unbelievably classic, and Geir's responses wonderfully good-natured - the mask dropped for a moment.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

John Cage was pretty melodic a lot of the time.

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

I liked when he called "When I'm 64" grown-up music and compared it to Irving Berlin.

Burr (Burr), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

yeah Geir should listen to Cage's "In a Landscape".

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Here's the soulseek folder thread, for reference:
I haven't been on this board for very long, so I'll ask: is Geir Hongro taking the piss?

i am nervous (cochere), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

classic: having the exact opposite opinion of me.
he's like Leonard Maltin, but for music.

autovac (autovac), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

Why does Geir like "Clocks" when it basically has no melody at all?
First and foremost, I like Coldplay. That particular song is not a particular favourite, even though I cannot say I have noticed there is considerably less of a tune there than on their other songs.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 08:16 (twenty years ago)

The one where he dismissed all Stax records because they weren't "melodic."
Or ANY of his comments about James Brown.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
OTM:

"Gone Troppo" is possibly George's most underrated work. It is sort of universally considered as the low point of his career, but it is indeed a marvellous collection of typical Harrison songs, coloured in a typical 80s production with lots of synths etc.

GH has been brought the heat recently, who's got the choice nuggets thereof?

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

Worst and most unlistenable genres/eras ever:
1. 12 tone music (1920-1940)
2. Hip-Hop (1979-present)
3. Funk/disco (late 60s-around 1980)
4. "Contemporary R&B" (Early 90s - present)
5. Bop (1940s)

Those scare quotes are so pointed!

David R., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Usually they have two or three verses, two or three choruses, and a bridge.

Unless there is a middle-eight later on, the actual song consists of the verse and the chorus. The rest is the arrangement and the lyrics, and the arrangement and the lyrics aren't part of the song. The song is only the melody.

-- Geir Hongro, Saturday, May 12, 2007 6:18 PM (2 days ago)

The song is only the melody.
The song is only the melody.
The song is only the melody.
The song is only the melody.

I fell off the couch the first time I read this exchange. I haven't had the privilege of hearing Mr. Hongro speak, but I imagine that line as read by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

I imagine more as being read by one of the Smurfs

Tom D., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

Music is there for lots and lots of purposes, out of which dancing is just a small and extremely unimportant part. The most important purpose is the use that is music in itself as a geniune intellectual process.

deej, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

It's a wonder he didn't get on better with Marissa!

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

The most important purpose is the use that is music in itself as a geniune intellectual process.

but on the same day, geir posted:

Music is meant just for entertainment.

do those two statements compute in the same universe?

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

Well, Entertainment is a genuine intellectual process, I would have thought.

But carry on anyway.

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

geir should unite, not divide us

deej, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

(You know that, from a legal/songwriter's standpoint, Geir is correct, right? As far as copyright is concerned, a song is its lyrics and melody; everything else is the arrangement of the song.)

Yes, but we are all FREE SPIRITS!

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

i like the one where he said mali and senegal are in east africa. so that's 1 out of 2, a higher ratio of correctness than usual.

Frogman Henry, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

it's 0 out of 2, mali is very much west africa

Just got offed, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

hahah a definite 0!

696, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

David Pleat doesn't know where Mali is either. Maybe they should team up.

No, erm, i meant he was right about the "africa" bit.
Apologies, it is ambiguously worded.

Frogman Henry, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

oh. ah

696, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

cantona?

696, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

That chant is lacking in melody therefore I do not consider a genuine football chant

Tom D., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

... what am I saying, Geir would never say that, he would say:

"That is not a genuine football chant as it is lacking in melody"

Tom D., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

and as for that whistle always blowing. got to stop. it has no merit and should not be allowed to stop and start the game

696, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

One cannot play a melody on a referee's whistle, therefore it is of no interest to me or anyone else who genuinely loves music

Tom D., Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

Referees should be equipped with polyphonic instruments if they are supposed to present a figure of authority.

The SE Asian multi-reed mouth organ called the Kaen would be easily portable yet capable of the requisite harmonies.
