lab waste - "zwarte achtegrond"
subtitle - "young dangerous heart"
kill the vultures S/T

other ideas?

Robin Samples, Monday, 30 May 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

the best song I've heard is Jadakiss's first diss track reply to 50 Cent ("Checkmate," I think) - "yeah you got a felony but you ain't a predicate" makes me laugh every time. Second best is "Hate It Or Love It"

I haven't heard a solid album. The Mike Jones is OK but not outstanding, the 50 album seems weak outside of the singles.

M.I.A. - Arular

LOLOLOLOLOL.

so far the brainwasher's taste is more up my alley

Robin Samples, Monday, 30 May 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

Spank Rock's new album will be it.

Sam Hunt (robosam), Monday, 30 May 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

who are spank rock? what are (will they be) like?

Robin Samples, Monday, 30 May 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

chief kamachi and the juju mob - black candles

lab waste - "zwarte achtegrond"

dutch rap?!? my curiosity is seriously piqued.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 30 May 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

1. dalek - abscence
2. the perceptionists - s/t
3. quasimoto - the further adventures of lord quas
4. sage francis - a healthy distrust
5. farm fresh - time is running out

i sound like such a backpacker. mainstream rap was better than indie rap for three years running, but i think undie-hop's having a good showing in 05. but i'm hoping the ying yang twins full-length delivers.

Edan- Beauty & the Beat

Anthony Lombardi (CCPO), Monday, 30 May 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

xpost - i was gonna say, i haven't heard of about 90% of the records on this thread so it must be backpacker shit.

Amon (eman), Monday, 30 May 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

who is mike jones? he's a rapper with a self-overhyped letdown of an album, that's who he is.

Amon (eman), Monday, 30 May 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

I do like the c-murder album that plumdrank's been talking about for awhile. The canned sounding vocals - apparently they were recorded on a small tape recorder that his lawyer brought to him in prison - give his words this incredible weight, dark yet still hopeful. The Z-ro album was pretty good, although I dont think i like it as much as W. McVey but I need to listen to it more. Mike Jones is great, but better if you haven't heard a lot of his stuff already. I'm surprised how negative most of the reactions have been from the press, although I shouldn't be. I really like Messy Marv's album. Edan's album is pretty great. That Flip/Z-ro mixtape is good. So is southern smoke 16. I'm waiting for Whut it Dew 2 to arrive in the mail, but I'm sure it'll be up there too.

deej., Monday, 30 May 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

Oh and I think the Beanie Sigel album is terrific.

deej., Monday, 30 May 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

As far as singles go, I thought Xzibit's "Criminal Set" b/w "Saturday Night" were great, although i'm sure the album is a dud (the other singles were). I dont like the Tru album a whole lot but "Where U From" was a great single and it definitely had its moments as an album. "Hate it or Love It" and "I'm a Hustla" might be my favorite singles of the year this far (as hip-hop goes). Was "Feel it in the Air" last year or this year?

deej., Monday, 30 May 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

Kill the Vultures OTM. Of course, my midcoast hometown bias may be showing through...

If 13 + God still counts as rap, then that's my other vote...

John Justen (johnjusten), Monday, 30 May 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

What on earth is most of this music you guys are talking about?

deej., Monday, 30 May 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

i bought neneh cherry's remastered cd with demos of manchild and buffalo stance and heart

(Milo OTM re: "Checkmate" too.)

deej., Monday, 30 May 2005 07:04 (twenty years ago)

That new Geto Boys album.

marcdrums (marcdrums), Monday, 30 May 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

deej, i like mike jones but his whole thing of constantly hyping the album made me go from "this should be really good" to "this better fucking be really good." still tippin, know what i'm sayin and screw that are excellent but the rest is "eh." do you know if the upcoming paul wall is any good? or maybe it's already out?

Amon (eman), Monday, 30 May 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

The new paul wall album comes out in august. he had one last year too, "chick magnet."

I liked "Turning Lane" and "grandma" and "Back Then" and a couple other songs too. I think its a weird album because he tells people who clearly already own his album to buy the album and there are lots of verses i'd heard before but i still like it. it certainly doesn't deserve the pretty much unanimous beating its taking from critics.

deej., Monday, 30 May 2005 07:21 (twenty years ago)

My favourite is by duo from Holland, where I'm from as well. It's called Mindstate and it's by Pete Philly & Perquisite. I'd be curious to know what ILM rap fans think, see if you can download a track or two. Song suggestions: "Insomnia", "Lazy", "Motivated", "Respect", "Mindstate". I don't really know what to compare it to, it's not hardcore gangsta crunk or anything, mind.

PS I also liked the Pimp C album a lot, and Quasimoto.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 30 May 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

that Beanie Sigel album is great, but the fact that it's the best rap record I've heard in 2005 is a pretty good indication it's been a slooooooow year for hip-hop so far.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Monday, 30 May 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

"Edan- Beauty & the Beat"

I've seen Edan mentioned quite a bit but no comparisons. So what is it like?

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Monday, 30 May 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

It'd better be pretty fucking good to eclipse the memory of all the shite he's inflicted on us so far.

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 30 May 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

Edan - beats are kinda hazy, loud psychedelic distorted, like an even wobblier RJD2 but in a good way; vocally he reminds me of Mos Def even though he's white (maybe part Asian, not sure) even though lyrically he's a good deal more abstract.

it's a very consistent and engaging record, nothing really so great to make you jump out of your seat but it hangs together very nicely (which might be partially to do with the fact that it's so short, which is definitely not a bad thing).

Josh Love (screamapillar), Monday, 30 May 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Haven't been checking out much hip-hop this year, but Layla - Heretik is pretty solid. Also, the Sa-Ra demos (to-be released album?) that's been on Soulseek for a while, if that counts.

Mil (Mil), Monday, 30 May 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

The Mind of Mannie Fresh

Beta (abeta), Monday, 30 May 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

beta otm - mannie fresh by a mile

though i do like the subtitle, farm fresh, mike jones, dalek, edan, and a few others that haven't been mentioned here (blueprint for instance)

xhuxk, Monday, 30 May 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

(actually though fannypack >>>> mannie... do they count?)

xhuxk, Monday, 30 May 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

dunno..i did like who is mike jones? on first couple of listens but the constant mike jonesing gets on my nerves. i cant stand quasimoto's voice either, sounds like eminem too much. dalek is very good but not like, you know, real hiphop, sorry i know. i guess i just have to wait for ghostface this year again and maybe just maybe raekwon will release cuban linx pt. II this year. that would be thrilling

rizzx (rizzx), Monday, 30 May 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

the rap threads have suddenly become the most incomprehensible threads on ilm.

anyway: mannie fresh, common, southern smoke 16 (or maybe 17?...i dont have it on hand) if you count mixtapes (i do), the beans record is about 2/3 good, mike jones is ass, i have heard a clutch of good mixtapes (slim thug, that one from big boi's new label) as per but albumswise this has been kind of a shit year so far.

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 30 May 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

that's "beans" as in "beanie sigel"...i keep forgetting i have to point that out on here.

also:
MF DOOM - Mm... Food (though there's really too many skits on there.. but the songs are on-par with Doom's previous work)
Aesop Rock - Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives EP (7 songs, all great.. i'm currently loving 'Holy Smokes' the most)

but we all agree the best albums this year will be the Ghostface & Doom releases (collab album, DangerDoom, solo Ghost).

and Common really sounds fresh with Kanye but I haven't listened to it enough (yet).

Guy Incognito (Guy Incognito), Monday, 30 May 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I liked that Common album at first, but the more i listen* the less I like Be. Mm Food was definitely last year. Not to be the year nazi (i guess technically mannie fresh was last year too, but that was like December.) I think strongo's right, it is southern smoke 17...i meant the one with bun-b, not slim thug. Which I think is 16.

*to other music

deej., Monday, 30 May 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

(I forgot to mention "Flossin'" upthread which is probably my favorite track outside of "st" on the mj album)

deej., Monday, 30 May 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

flossin is great

and you know what album is good? b.g. - heart of tha streetz

jones (actual), Monday, 30 May 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

i guess i wouldn't consider fannypack, but it's great, too. can't quite find big boi's got that purp tho.

Beta (abeta), Monday, 30 May 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

"Mm Food was definitely last year."

Yeah, I just checked the CD and it does say 2004. but i could've sworn it came out this year (and that the leak was from 2004). Maybe I got it mixed up with Sage's 'Healthy Distrust' leaking in november and not coming out til february. Nevermind.

Guy Incognito (Guy Incognito), Monday, 30 May 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

the interesting thing about these threads is how often everyonee talks past each other, i think.

which third of the beans (thats beanie sigel) album is bad?

i only listened to the first half of the common album because it got really warped from being left in my left in my car and i thought leaving it under some dictionarys would help. but i found it mildly intolerable.

withlimbs, Monday, 30 May 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

So far, a toss-up between Grayskul's Deadlivers and the new Ludacris...or wait, is Red Light District 2004?

Huk-L, Monday, 30 May 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

I need to fully listen to the Common, Aesop and Mannie Fresh; but thus far Beanie seems ahead of the pack.

The single off of the Mike Jones album is TERRIBLE.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 30 May 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

you mean "still tippin" ????

Amon (eman), Monday, 30 May 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Is Akon rapping on his single? Cuz I am enjoying that.

Huk-L, Monday, 30 May 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Amon: uh, no; I love "still tippin'".
I mean "Back Then", which attempts to extend the "back then they didn't want me / now I'm hot, ho's all on me" hook into a full length song.
It's kinda icky. And boring.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 30 May 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

that may explain my enjoyment of the mannie fresh album, minna.

mannie (minna), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

im still really skeptical about trinas album. don't trip is pretty good and it got me all hopeful but then i heard the song with pharrell. i know im not the first to say it but somebody please delete the neptunes! somebody please also save trina. i'm really saddened by her slide into tragic battered wife toothlessness because diamond princess was one of my favourite albums ever, i say was because nu-trina is ruining it with her no self esteem. i say all of this without having heard the album obviously. can somebody say why i should listen to it?

minna (minna), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

haha i would also like to know, from the guy who says that jeezy has no charisma, what the hell are you talking about!

minna (minna), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

I thought Paul Wall's rapping sucked on his album... The same barely-competent flow on every track. Hoping the S&C version holds some delights though.

Gavin, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I like barely competent flows! (Actually, I don't give a fuck about flow competence, and never has. I like his drawl; somebody said he's the first successful white rapper to sound black, but I don't get that; she sounds like Bubba, a Southern white boy. He's really warm, expressive. Lots of his album is totally sad and beautiful.)

Trina's voice and tracks have WAY more life and energy in them than any other hip-hop I've heard this year. I was not expecting much, but I'm blown away. It is the only hip-hop album this year where I start dancing around my living room. No other hip-hop album I've heard this year is so fucking *catchy*, period. No other hip-hop album I've heard this year rocks so hard. And give or take Mannnie's, no other one has made me laugh so much. I love that Trina wants her and Oprah to make a sandwhich out of Genwine on her birthday. She deserves it!

Playing Slim Thug now. Ho fucking hum, for the most part. Oppressive hard-guy thug tedium. Humorless and stodgy, as near as I can tell. I kind of hate the guy's voice. The Latin/Mantronix beats in the Bun B track I Ain't Heard Of That (Remix)" sound totally awesome, though.

I should play Missy's album more. I always take her for granted, which is wrong.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't give a fuck about flow competence, and never HAVE
HE sounds like Bubba.

whatever.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

It's funny, I hate most of the "oppressive hard-guy thug tedium" rappers who have become even more inescapable in his wake, but I really enjoy 50's album. Lots of sing-song catchy stuff. I don't really dig this new "Hustler's Ambition" song though. I like the club tracks way more then the maudlin "why i'm an asshole" stuff.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Don't bother with Missy, it's hands down her worst album ever. Even worse than Da Real World.

Also, I didn't know Paul Wall was white when I first heard him. And I also think the whole "Gasp, white people RAPPING!?!?!?111wtfomg" articles that have come in his wake are very 1999. And he's very, very competent and articulate from what I gather.

Slim Thug is hella humorless. Sadly, Pharrell has the best TWO lines on that record: "Looks like my wrist been dipped in diamond fondue" and "That bbbbrrrtt make your chest look just like some pizza."

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard Trina's album yet, but if Minna's OTM with this "no self-esteem" then that's one hell of a cold shower. I've been having some allergic reaction to Paul Wall but I should hear the album. Way more curious about Chamillionaire.

Pitbull's got a new EP coming out that will probably make my top something if it doesn't suck.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know Vanilla Ice was white when I first heard him! (True story, which I've told many times. He was on a Detroit rap station.)

There's definitely stuff I liked on the Missy. Seemed more or less on par with most of her other albums, which I've always liked but never loved. I'm still really waiting for her best-of CD, hopefully soon.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm curious where Minna hears the "no self esteem" -- oh wait, she hasn't heard the album; that explains it! Because to me Trina sounds like she loves herself and loves life, again, more than any other rapper I've heard lately. Though maybe if I concentrated more on the words instead of dancing around my living room I'd think differently.

(I know nothing about Trina being a battered wife, or anything else about her life for that matter. I don't pay attention to celebrity's lives, at all, though if she *is* a battered wife, that's very sad, obviously. I think I heard Lil Wayne is her boyfriend; that made me smile. I think they'd be a cute couple. I hope he's not the batterer.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I love the Missy album. :(

Sure, there's a clump of tracks I skip in the last third, but "Can't Stop", "Lose Control", "Irresistable Delicious", "Partytime" (the beat, not the hook), "Bad Man" (even though M.I.A. kinda sucks on it)...there's a bunch of hot shit on it. Even the "forgettable" tracks are pretty good.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

The Missy album is great. I don't skip any of the tracks - though I wish I could skip some of the skits.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

oh shes not actually a battered wife!! it just seemed like something bad had happened to her. the ginuwine & oprah line sounds funny! maybe i will still listen to it
i got the 'no self esteem' from the terrible boring pharell song and all those bad singles and bad guest verses she put out in between diamond princess and now. obviously i didnt want it to be true!

minna (minna), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Two things: Paul has a fine flow, it's just repetitive.

Also, the original version of "State To State" (with Bun B) is a million times better than the released one with Freeway, it's banging.

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I mean it's not awful, but it's the same on every track. Yawn.

I also didn't know he was white, but that was when I first heard him on screw tapes a few years ago... His name sounds great screwed... "Pawwwwwwl Waaaawwwwwwlll." Plus he had the advantage of only having a one verse out of like 6 on a song.

Are people not liking the Missy as much as when it came out? I remember thinking it was weird that it left me sort of cold but everyone else seemed to think it was her best.

Gavin, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

I like how Bun B was the first to rhyme "Paul Wall" with "Fuck all y'all."

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Are people not liking the Missy as much as when it came out?

I think for the most part it got kind of mixed reviews from the start. From looking at MetaCritic, the consensus seemed to be: A return-to-form after the disappointing "This is Not a Test", but not as good as her earlier work. (Which is kind of ironic, considering that the initial reaction to "This is Not a Test" was actually more positive than the initial reaction to "The Cookbook" - but I guess people soured on that one after a while.)

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

The Cookbook is alright but compared to her last 2 albums it's a serious breath of fresh air.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Whew Xhuxk I like yr post about 'filler' on rap albums'n'all but why is Oppressive hard-guy thug tedium. Humorless and stodgy, as near as I can tell a bad thing? I mean, aside from 'tedium' which implies pejorative. I like him because he's a badass and I dont see why these rappers should all be ha-ha hilarious entertainment dancing for the cameras etc. I think Slim's persona is cool, the whole nonchalant thunderous baritone vox.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes I like my rappers humorless.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

i still want to hear the 0-Solo album. is it out? i like the songs i've heard.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Well, "humorless," "oppressive," and "stodgy" are pejoratives too, trust me. And I never said all rappers have to be comedians. But it does help if they have a bit of effervescence or fun in them to balance out the tough-guy shtick. Schooly D was as badass as Slim will ever be, and he had loads. (He was also ha-ha-hilarious, too, so I don't see how one detracts from the other. I'm not sure what humorlessness is supposed to ADD. It sure don't make music MORE badass.) That thunderous baritone just makes the CD feel leaden and draggy to me (at least so far, and with at least one exception, which I mentioned above), but Slim Thug is hardly the only guy (in this genre or many others) where that's happened. Hell, I really don't listen to Johnny Cash or Glen Danzig all that often, either.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

O-Solo is pretty funny.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

I mean, maybe there IS effervescence or fun or beauty (beyond the Mantronixied Bun B track) on that Slim Thug record, and I just haven't noticed it yet. I'm not saying that's not possible. But right now, it just seems like it's supposed to be NUTRITIOUS or something. Like you're telling me to eat my liver or I get no desert. But if you LIKE liver, go for it! xp

xhuxk, Tuesday, 25 October 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

I think of it more like being a shot of liquor that tastes sour going down but gives a solid jolt once its settled. But I dont really like most food = music parallels bcuz they end up all "EAR CANDY SUCKS"

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Any love for One Self 'Children of Possibility'?
It'd have to be one of my favourites, I really like the production style that Vadim has developed over the last few albums and he did a great job on this one.

Bn1 (Bn1), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

goddamnit where were you all when i started a thread about the Trina album. yes it is great; it's more crunk'n'b than diamond princess or baddest bitch, which kind of suits her. plus her flow is way better and less monotonous than in the past, although i miss lines about how she makes guys go down on her when she's on her period. still, in a lot of ways she's really grown as an MC when nobody was looking.

paul wall is great too but i can't listen to it for more than a few tracks at a time. sittin' sideways is my favorite of the h-town singles this year, even over still tippin'.

I listened to Bun-B again today and I'm kind of bitter about it. Its a very frustrating album, there are so many tossed off-sounding verses, followed by some really REALLY great shit, and some fantastic production.

So I decided Mannie Fresh wins, not Trina. Hadn't played Mannie in months, and I'd forgotten how much bounce it has and how hilarious its jokes are. No contest, really. (Trina finishes a good second, though, I think. Unless Jeezy does, which is still a possibility.)

I mean, "hilarious" isn't even really what I mean -- Mannie's sense of humor is downright GOOFY. It's almost a comedy record, as over-the-top wacky as Bobby Jimmy and the Critters or Oran "Juice" Jones. The skits don't even seem like skits; they just arise naturally out of everything else that's going on, so they're not annoying. And even though he makes fun of himself for doing it (just like he makes fun of himself for everything else), Mannie incorporates '70s soul music *at least* as beautifully as Kanye does. I also totally love the parts that go beyond Cash Money type stuff into even bouncier Take Fo' Records DJ Jubilee style totally regional New Orleans party music, not to mention how some of the beats go into totally regional New Orleans second-line r&b gumbo territory. (Feels good to vote for a record that sounds so New Orleans this year, too, obviously.)

(Speaking of regional sounds, I still might take Rod Lee's Baltimore club *Vol. 5: The Official* over Trina, so if that counts as a rap record, I guess that might be second place instead. And Fannypack and MIA still beat Mannie if they count, but I don't think they do here.)

Funny, I love the album but I didn't get that sense from it. I haven't heard it in awhile though.

Xhuxk, if you want I'll send you the Hot 8 Brass Band record or something?

I wish the Mannie Fresh album was double vinyl. It's terrific but I could use the act of flipping sides.

Nah, I'm not saying I'd vote for it for that reason. Just a pleasant coincidence. (And I'm thinking more Lee Dorsey-ish beats than Dirty Dozen Brass Band-ish beats, anyway. Wish I could cite specific tracks, but I haven't taken notes or anything. I do know I get that feeling from a couple tracks every time I hear the thing, though. I'm not even saying it's intentional. But I do get the idea that the old soul music Mannie draws on here has a real Southern feel in general.)

actually I googled it and it looks like it HAS been released on double vinyl. Never mind!

Some of his Cash Money beats are New Orleans as fuck, in terms of the basslines and some of the specific claves used.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 4 November 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

(as it happens, the Hot 8 record has my favorite rap verses of the year.)

Well heck, then, if you WANT to send me a copy, I'll listen to it!
