Buying things on the recommendations of other ILMers (Also known as a head-nod and thank you to Alex in NYC)

So, I'm wandering around the wonderful and underrated Hymie's Records in MPLS, and decide in honor of Mr. Alex to look, presumably uneventfully, in the Killing Joke section. And there, in all it's glory, is an UNOPENED copy of "Fire Dances" on vinyl for (wait for it) $4.00. It should be noted that I have several KJ releases, but not this one, and have in fact never heard it.

It's opened now. And HOLEE FUCK...it's the best thing I've purchased this year.

So two things:

1. Thank you, Alex.
2. Anyone else have any similar stories of mind-blowing gratitude for another ILMer's suggestions?

(By the way, if this thread has already been done, so be it.)

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 2 June 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

I LOVE LUOMO

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 2 June 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

stirmonster (by virtue of optimo) THANK YOU.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 2 June 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

I've bought way too many things on ilm's suggestion to list 'em all but two noteworthy ones from this year:

Nathan Fake - "Sky is Pink" and Holden - "A break in the clouds" - THANK YOU TIM FINNEY

Swayzak - "Another day" (Richard Davis mix) - THANK YOU RONAN

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 2 June 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

Brooke Valentine's Chain Letter - believe the hype; it's a goodie.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 2 June 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

i've never actually interacted with alex in nyc, but after reading all of his raves as a lurker i bought a double cd of 'killing joke' and 'night time' a couple of months ago. it's good! also on a more recent note, electric sound mentioned that 'blush' by the hummingbirds is one of his favourite songs (in response to me making a negative remark about them). so i searched for an album to upgrade the cruddy cassingles i had of theirs and eventually found their greatest hits in the $10 bin last weekend. and it is brilliant! i have had to have little dances around my loungeroom every night this week.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 2 June 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

Eddie Gale
Boredoms
Superpitcher

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 2 June 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)

Once again, much thanks to everyone (esp. JBR) who goaded me into buying the Steely Dan catalogue. Katy Lied has begun to kick in, and no doubt Aja will follow soon enough.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 2 June 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

Funny. I downloaded some Killing Joke today as an introduction (beyond 80's!), because of all Alex's noise. Love it. (tip'o'the'hat)

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Thursday, 2 June 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if killing joke are aware of their one-man online marketing machine.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 2 June 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

I had filed Killing Joke as one-hit-wonders ("Change")and basically forgotten them until Alex in NYC showed the error of my ways. Thanks!

m coleman (lovebug starski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

I've bought quite a few things based on the overall groundswell of opinion on the board - and several more on the recommendations of individual posters, of whom the good Dr. C and the esteemed Marcello Carlin are the first ones to spring to mind.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

There's one fellow here who seems to like an album called Loveless a lot- I saw it in the store the other day and thought about buying it, but I think I am going to wait for a second opinion.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Likes Loveless a lot you say?

No, I'm completely flummoxed.

Can you give us any more clues?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to, but I haven't seen enough of his posts to say anything else about him.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Smoosh (by Negativa on this thread)

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

John, does pre-ILM advice count? Because you're responsible for maybe half of my CD collection.

If it hadn't been for ILM, I never would have investigated The Mountain Goats.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

My honest answer is, I like to hang out here, and I often do buy things based on opinions around here, but my life was simpler when I just stuck to buying based on the recommendations from the Official ILM Enemies List- Other Music, Dusted, and MOJO.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

hardly anything ever.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

The truth be told, I was probably buying more or less the same stuff, just in a more relaxed fashion.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Like Gear, I discovered the Boredoms through ILM also. It's been sitting in my CD player the past couple days, and damn, it's great. I need to find more music like this. Also, Nick Drake. I just bought Bryter Lyter the past couple days, same time I got Boredoms, and now I have all 3 of his albums. It was a double ILM recommendation shopping day!

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

I bought Hum's 'Downward is Heavenward' because Ned liked it so much.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

wow. Deja Vu all over again....

Cop Shoot Cop and How ILM has influenced your CD shopping?

Were it not for ILM (specifically the sage-like typing of Ned R.), I don't think I ever would have given Horse Rotorvator by COIL a second glance. I had Scatology (pretty much solely for the "Tainted Love" cover), but after reading Ned's (and others') testaments about how Horse Rotorvator was possibly the scariest album ever recorded (it's not, as it sadly turns out, though it's way creepy), I was motivated to czech it out. Not only is it now one of my very favorites, but its made me re-examine Scatology (also a mind-fucker) and voraciously seek out other COIL albums. Thanks Ned! Thanks ILM!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Boredoms
I read 'a' for 'i' in that second word and did a double-take.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 2 June 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

absu!

etc.

mainly thanks to siegbran and john darnielle. cheers.

cb, Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to, but I haven't seen enough of his posts to say anything else about him.

I'll keep an eye out. He must be around somewhere.

Thanks Ned! Thanks ILM!

Why, you're quite welcome!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 June 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

basic channel, kompakt, biosphere, luomo, katatonia, enslaved, kevin coyne--lots of stuff.

dan (dan), Thursday, 2 June 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

OK, while I was out to get my lunch I went to Rox N Yr Head to get Thee Mountain Goats CD. R U HAPPY NOW, FUX0RS???!??

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 2 June 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom (after reading Marcello Carlin's review of it) and I think I've bought many albums after reading Ned's reviews of course.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Actually, MIA! THANKS ILM!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

walter kranz got me to buy a red krayola album and, I think, safe as milk. the latter is now one of my all-time faves. i bought village green preservation society thanks to stormy's zeal (and i love it). i haven't checked out killing joke, but i did buy a bauhaus album thanks to alex.. i don't really like it , but i haven't lost faith! :)

i tried to buy a disco inferno album after reading some praise from ned, but other music didn't have it.. oh, and i just bought a john fahey album a few days ago because of ol' hstencil (even though he's always sassing me).

otherwise, Dom Leone, Nick Sylvester, and Andy Beta are responsible for (literally) 4/5 of the records I own haha. i've been mining their lists for over a year.

Thanks, ILM!

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

actually oh yes M.I.A! and also Ying Yang twins.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Rusted Root!

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Big and Rich people!

dan. (dan.), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I somehow managed to resist that one. But I did watch a lot of CMT over Christmas.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

I think the first record I ever bought strictly based on ILM was Kish Kash.

Since then: Junior Boys, M.I.A., Superpitcher, Cut Copy, Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem, Luomo, Max Tundra, and probably some others, although it's hard to tell sometimes whether I would've bought it, anyway. ILM is probably indirectly responsible for a lot more, considering that I feel like it's definitely shaped my tastes over the past couple of years.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Most of those are Collective ILM Recommendations, but I can name names for a couple:

Max Tundra --> Nabisco
Luomo --> Matos, Kenan, Adamrl

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

believe it or not: Killing Joke
(I like the later metal stuff!)

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

I too picked up Kish Kash based on ILM raves.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Eluvium, thanks to donut debonair. Probably my most played album since I bought it.

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Based on ILM recommendations I bought and enjoyed: Ariel Pink, MIA, Piero Umiliani, Turtles - Turtle Soup, maybe the DFA compilation, the 1981 box, and probably some others. I've downloaded lots of stuff I found out about on ILM like Baile Funk and Optimo mixes. Whenever I'm curious about a certain genre or artist I search through the old threads and get lots of great track recommendations. I still haven't bothered to check out Killing Joke but I'm sure I'll get around to it someday.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Right now I'm listening to Sagittarius and looking at a copy of Anniemal and one of World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's a Real Thing. I wonder why I bought those?

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Those are both good albums!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

I actually haven't seen much about the West Africa comp on here, tho. I just bought it last week.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

thirteenth floor elevators 'easter everywhere' (thanks scott seward)
grateful dead 'anthem of the sun" (thanks brock)

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

To be honest I can't begin to list 'em all. So I won't.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

I didn't say they weren't, jaymc.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

I think it was Hurting who recommended the West African thing.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

i definitely picked up Annie and Richard X cos of ILM. Coloma too. oddly i already had MIA's "Galang" before ILM mentioned her..

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

You ultrahipster!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

actually i thank/blame my UK mailorder fellah for turning me onto staggering amounts of music. if i discover anything first, it's because of him as a rule.

Leeeeee (Leee), Friday, 3 June 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

five years pass...

I'd this year like to thank the ILX metal guys for recommending me Ufomammut's "Eve" and the slo-mo house fellows for putting me onto Mark E. Both will probably make my lists now we are here at the end of things. Also found Glasser, Rangda and Guido here and all have made my year infinitely better. Cheers to all of you and Happy New Year.

puff pastry hangman (admrl), Friday, 31 December 2010 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

ILM clued me in to Glasser, one of my favorite discoveries this year. Huzzah!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 31 December 2010 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

On a side-note, I see that Starbuck's has picked Glasser for their song of the week this week!

puff pastry hangman (admrl), Friday, 31 December 2010 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

i've bought dozens of songs and albums this year based on ILM recommendations, and i've been introduced to whole new genres -- many of which i now love -- based on ILM threads. thanks to all of you, and happy new year.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 31 December 2010 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

I constantly feel I don't fit in ILM. Most of the artists I enjoy get so maligned around here it sucks the fun out of their music and those who dont get maligned are just probably not popular enough to deserve the attention.
Many of the good recommendations I've borrowed from ILM are low key and rarely get the hype they deserve.

Moka, Friday, 31 December 2010 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

Awwww =(

puff pastry hangman (admrl), Friday, 31 December 2010 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

That's sad, Moka. Keep liking your Moka music and don't let them get u down.

puff pastry hangman (admrl), Friday, 31 December 2010 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

On the other hand most of the artists and songs that I think are awful get unanimously hated in here so it's nice to feel I'm not alone on those ones.

Moka, Friday, 31 December 2010 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

And actually it's not a complaint, receiving bad opinions on the music I like is much better than not receiving any opinions at all.

Moka, Friday, 31 December 2010 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

There's a lone sympathizer every now and then too!

Moka, Friday, 31 December 2010 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

seriously, moka, you do fit in.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 31 December 2010 20:17 (fourteen years ago)

hey moka i discovered some cool stuff on your blog way back like 2 years ago including the band HOLY SHIT and the stills for this movie which i still wanna see when it comes out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/neilkrug/sets/72157603372676819/with/2852781376/

gr8080, Friday, 31 December 2010 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks Daniel! I still wouldn't leave this place if everyone started disagreeing with me I like it in here. I'd stand my ground and follow in Geir's steps or wait until I get banned.

gr808: yeah I remember that post, it was a fun pop playlist of sorts there was Tommy Roe, Cyrus Erie, Strawberry Alarm Clock... I haven't seen the movie myself but also very interested in seeing it when it comes out.

Moka, Friday, 31 December 2010 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

the filmmaker keeps busy w/ other shit it looks like: http://www.neilkrug.com/

gr8080, Friday, 31 December 2010 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

thx to ilm's metalheads for getting me into some good stuff this year, as a total n00b

recs is basically why i read ILM these days anyway. i have very little to say, but i have a better sense of whose taste i trust on ilm than i do at say pitchfork or some stupid blog

ullr saves (gbx), Friday, 31 December 2010 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

many thanks to Edward III for cluing me in to the greatness of Ewa Demarczyk.

i probably busted a nut when i was tossing her cookie salad (unregistered), Friday, 31 December 2010 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

Hundreds of albums, ranging from Alireza Mashayekhi to Drums of Death. Maybe 55% of my discoveries over the past 5 years. In particular, the several microhouse discussions earlier this decade cued me into an entire axis of related artists that spared me the dissappointment of so much IDM disappearing up its own anus. ILILM.

Yours sincerely, Bad Poetry (Sanpaku), Friday, 31 December 2010 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

"And actually it's not a complaint, receiving bad opinions on the music I like is much better than not receiving any opinions at all."

Heh, yeah, like almost every obscuro post-punk thread I revive which quickly sinks back into the digital mire. Enjoy your feedback regardless!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 31 December 2010 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

I also gotta say that despite my interest in a lot of Bristol postrock stuff from 10 or 15 years back, I might never have thought to check out the new Third Eye Foundation album if L Jag hadn't praised it to the skies, and that's a scary thought.

i probably busted a nut when i was tossing her cookie salad (unregistered), Friday, 31 December 2010 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

I will listen to anything these dudes recommend:

moonship - techno stuff
scott seward - weirdo disco
r1o natsume (RIP) - YMO, j-stuff, early electro
Tim Finney - newer house (haven't been able to get into funky house tho)
