Taking Sides: Bob Marley Vs The Raveonettes

The Raveonettes are one of my fave bands of the past few years. They rock and they have a super sexy blonde in the group and they have a song that begins, "My girl is a little animal she always wants to fuck. Don't know the reason why, I guess it's just my luck" which is FAB.

Bob Marley didn't much like homosexuals and smoked a lot of dope and wore these stupid hats, thus inspiring new generations of people to smoke dope and wear these stupid hats. And his songs weren't much cop, really, when you think about it.

The Raveonettes win.

I like the first half of that new Raveonettes, wanna check out some Bob Marley full-lengths eventually but no rush. So I guess right now I prefer the Raveonettes. I assume that will change quickly.

That girl's kind of a cold fish for my taste really. Her Ronnie Spector imitation ain't as fun as it should be.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Y'know, I opened this thread thinkin' "what the fuck?", but Mick makes some compelling arguments.

That said, despite being an arguable homophone, wife-beater, silly hat-espouser and whatever else, Bob had a lot more tricks up his sleeve musically than do the `Nettes.

I quite liked their first ep, Whip it On, but that's about all I'll ever need from them, and even that gets samey quickly.

"samey" = all songs in the same key = worst gimmick ever

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 5 June 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Antoine, did you go to college? Than you probably heard all the Marley you'll ever need to hear.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 5 June 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

"samey" = all songs in the same key = worst gimmick ever

I dunno if it's worse ever, but it's not something I'd base a career on. Do they still do that on the new one?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 5 June 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Most Cliched "College" Album

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 5 June 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

I didn't hear that much Marley in college! Too old school for the folks in the dorm rooms around mine evidently. It was a time of DMB.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

You left out the 'u' in the last word.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 June 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Ahhh, stupid hats.

The Raveonettes encapsulate so much of everything that is wrong with rock right now it's surprising they aren't far worse.

I don't even need to own any Bob Marley records to still be confident in saying he was one of those once-in-a-generation geniuses in his genre.

Calum are you deliberately trying to find the most unevenly weighted taking sides topics to start? Nobody is really this blinkered are they? You could develop your trolling to be a bit ... funnier.

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 5 June 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I think this one was plenty funny. The Cure one got on his loopy obsessive mode, but this one stuck with a redeemably batty cultural commentary.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

heh

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 5 June 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I like the new Raveonettes album. I ignored the last one, despite the cool cover art, because I was too concerned about repeating what I call the "BRMC fiasco." But yeah, the new one is fun! There's a cover of "My Boyfriend's Back." Its great too!

deej., Sunday, 5 June 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

This is a ridiculous argument. We are oversimplifying Marley and giving the Raveonettes way too much credit.

Anthony Lombardi (CCPO), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

The rockist in me picks Marley. The pop-ist in me picks The Raveonettes. The Calum in me is going to start another thread.

k/l (Ken L), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

The Geir in me picks the Beatles.

k/l (Ken L), Sunday, 5 June 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Massive xpost: The Raveonettes have abandoned the all-songs-in-the-same-key thing with this record. It's also quieter in spots and a good bit more varied.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

I have more love for the Jesus & Mary Chain more than most bands that have ever existed, therefore the Raveonettes get some love by default.
But the part in Bob's "Natty Dread" where the bridge ends and he breaks back in with "don't care what the world say" with unending conviction is as sublime a moment I've heard. I don't think the Raveonettes have crafted a moment that makes me feel like that, so Bob gets my vote this morning.

(note: the bit in "Attack of the Ghost Riders" where the wall of noise drops on the "goes something like this" part is pretty fuckin gnarly though.)

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

The Raveonettes have not crafted a moment where anybody feels anything. The whole premise in the original question is they might be better than Marley because he didn't like gay people and made poor choices in headwear. So, if the chick in the Raveonettes has a foot odor problem and kicks her dog, can we say maybe some bullshit like Keane might be better, since they seem like nice guys and all?

Anthony Lombardi (CCPO), Monday, 6 June 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

if all you know of marley is what you hear on the radio or at parties or in college, it's easy to hate on him, just like it's easy to hate on dylan if all you know is "rainy day women." he had great moments and average moments and utterly transcendent ones (and hella overplayed ones, too), and you've got to dig into his catalog to really get a sense of him. i've always loved the late-period survival, which gets pretty damn poppy with songs like "one drop" and "top rankin'," and his early ska/rocksteady/whatever sides, like the insanely catchy "can't you see." i never paid much attention to his hats, but i'd take his over, say, badly drawn boy's any day of the week.

Antoine, did you go to college? Than you probably heard all the Marley you'll ever need to hear.

I used to think that, but then I heard Soul Revolution pt. II

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 6 June 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

Anthony (xxpost) - now that is just a silly point, really.

Music Mick, Monday, 6 June 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

So, if the chick in the Raveonettes has a foot odor problem and kicks her dog, can we say maybe some bullshit like Keane might be better, since they seem like nice guys and all?

Bahahahahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

are the Raveonettes English, or big in the English press right now, or do they have boobies or something? 'cause Music Mick believes that any or all of those qualities are enough to put a band over

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Sir, Music Mick bases his tastes on the talent behind the microphones and The Raveonettes have that in bundles.

Music Mick, Monday, 6 June 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

are the Raveonettes English

I think they're Danish....which is to say, from Denmark, not that they're pastry.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

And Music Mick IS NOT ENGLISH.

Music Mick, Monday, 6 June 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

In Denmark they call that pastry Wienerbrød, meaning "bread from Vienna."

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

fuckin' ENGLISH indie kids!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

And Music Mick IS NOT ENGLISH.

no, but he tends to get very excited about English bands

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

...and, as I say, if the English press begins to champion a band, Music Mick often finds that band quite palatable indeed, especially if said band has boobies.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Uh... aside from The Raveonettes being British, The Killers are American and the yank press have gone pretty ga-ga over them.

Music Mick, Monday, 6 June 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

"Who Feels It Knows It" now playing in my head for rest of day, thanks...
