all your questionable race-related favourite quoteables, post them here! was mick paying black girls a compliment? was he saying they merely enjoy sex and have great stamina (is he implying white girls dont?) - what was so bad about that lyric? he just loves black women! cut him some slack!

mickjonescaucasianlips, Sunday, 5 June 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

yes...yes they do

That One Guy (That One Guy), Sunday, 5 June 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

the stones have quite a few.....

theres a big daddy kane song where scoob or scrap lover say 'dont go to the chinese restaurant cos i dont eat cats'. that must count here.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Sunday, 5 June 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

From Raunchy Young Lepers - "No No No":

"And he started RAMMING ME UP THE ASS! Big black dude, homosexual mass!"

"I can't rap, so I'm a gay rapist!"

"boy, niggers can't float" from the chorus of REGGIE by black nasty

Palpatean Mists, Sunday, 5 June 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

"And while the niggers of this world are starving
with their mouths wide open"

The The, the Violence of Truth. I had to ask here about what that was on about.

gspm (gspm), Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

The Violent Femmes...."Black Girls".

I dig the black girls, oh so much more than the white girls.
I was so pleased to learn they were faster.
C'est, c'est, c'est vous I'm after.

All comes a faggot white boy.
Said look, look, look first kind of joy.
They come around so queer and quiet,
but inside -- rebel and riot.

Shall I dig the white boys?
All so much more that the black boys.
I was so pleased to learn they're not smarter.
Go on, give, give, give it to me harder, harder, harder, just say harded.

You know I love the Lord of hosts,
the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost.
I was so pleased to learn that he's inside me
In my time of trouble he will hide me.

I dig the black girls.
I dig the black girls.
I dig the black girls.
I dig the black girls.

and, as a follow up, here was Alex in NYC giving me his interpretation of Violence of Truth In Praise of.....Mind Bomb by The The

gspm (gspm), Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

to cross-reference posts, this contention - "Personally speaking, I don't believe Johnson was using the term in an offensive way. He's decrying the world for treating these individuals like "niggers"" makes no sense to me. if hes chastising the world for treating people 'like niggers', cant he just say theyre being treated like black people? obviously he suffers from that age-old disease of just loving that he can use the n-word.

ppp, Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

Then how is 50 Cent using it any less offensive? Who own the word?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

ownS

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Do those infamous Gun Club lyrics count? I'm still not sure of JLP's background/intent/defense regarding those.

Nic de Teardrop (Nicholas), Monday, 6 June 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Actually, the correct Stones lyric is: "Black girls like to get fucked all night."

Carry on.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 6 June 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

xpost - no one owns the word per se but 50 cent using it is up to him if he wants to use it. hes black, after all. im expecting you to call this a double standard but its just one of those things that you take for granted. if chinese people want to use chink, theyre allowed, if asian people want to use paki they can, etc etc. racial epithets are 'allowed' from the mouths of the people they were used against.

ppp, Monday, 6 June 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

I guess, but I still think you have to look at the context of the usage.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

red ribbons in this category go to david allen coe (for the likes of "nigger fucker" and "some niggers never die") and the frogs (a good chunk of the racially yours album).

but i've always found casual references like the stones lyric quoted at the top of the thread a lot more, um, interesting. coe and the frogs are just trying to get reactions. i get the feeling that mick jagger, for example, is actually trying to say something. they're writing jokes; he's writing lyrics. which doesn't automatically make his better. or worse. just different.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 6 June 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

cant he just say theyre being treated like black people?

"nigger" implies oppression on a scale that "black people" does not

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 6 June 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

There's

"That one looks Jewish, and that one's a coon!
Who let all this riffraff into the room?"

and

"Would you like to send our coloured cousins home again, my friend?"

on The Wall, once Pink's lost it.

la vallee, Monday, 6 June 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

To be a pedant about it, I think the line is "Black girls just wanna get fucked all night, I just don't have that much jam." That the song contains numerous other racial generalizations, and that this might indicate something other than singling out one race for ridicule or abuse, is a point that has eluded more people than it ought to have done.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Monday, 6 June 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

Skrewdriver to thread!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 6 June 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

xpost, to be honest, mick singing that black girls in his view like to fuck all night, isnt racist, per se, its just a racial generalisation/stereotype being perpetuated.

ppp, Monday, 6 June 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

There's that Ray Davies song about looking Jewish... actually there's another one where he puts on a comedy Jewish accent... tut tut Ray

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 6 June 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh here it is:

"Who cares if you're Jewish,
And your breath smells of garlic"

I suppose it's not that racist but Ray, rather pointedly I think, left it off the recent "Village Green" reissue

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 6 June 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

Eh? I thought Ray Davies WAS Jewish!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 6 June 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

Oh no no no!

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 6 June 2005 08:59 (twenty years ago)

He talked about it in that piece in Uncut last year.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 6 June 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

clapton's outburst at some gig in the 70s which he refuses to apologise for to thread.

ppp, Monday, 6 June 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

About which he also talked, unrepentantly, in Uncut last year.

robbie fulks-- white mans bourban

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 6 June 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know he was still unrepentent. What did he say in Uncut, having had a mere 28 years to consider the foolishness of his words?

snotty moore, Monday, 6 June 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Hey, Clapton LOVES black folk! Particularly if they died back in the '30s.

Much as I love Bon Scott-era AC/DC, I was always quite offended and disappointed by his "Let There Be Rock" lyric asserting that "White man had the smarts/Black man had the blues." So I was pleased to discover just last year that I'd always misheard it: That's actually "schmaltz" that the white man had!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 6 June 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)

That he still agreed with Enoch, that he felt immigrants were being conned into coming to Britain with the promise of a new life when in fact they end up cleaning toilets, that there was too much of it going on and if we'd listened to Enoch we wouldn't be in the mess we are today. That was the gist of it.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 6 June 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

schmaltz is gangsta though. havent you heard song cry by jay-z?

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 6 June 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

xpost, i was actually a bit fucked off that uncut didnt lay into clapton for those comments more then they did. it was as if they didnt want to dispell anyones clapton is god notions of reverence by making too big of a deal about him being a card carrying idiot. still, at least they asked him about it.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 6 June 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

Unfortunately Uncut's circulation still depends in large part on people who still think that Clapton Is God.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 6 June 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

xp- Incredible. I wonder who cleans Clappo's toilet.

snotty moore, Monday, 6 June 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

Probably not the same "coloured" cleaner who left the windows open when the kid was alone in the house.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 6 June 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

I can't be bothered to find the lyrics, but "Friggin' in the Riggin'" by the post-Lydon-departure Sex Pistols uses the "n" word (augmented by a "fuckin'" in front of it) in what appears to be earnest.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

to be honest, mick singing that black girls in his view like to fuck all night, isnt racist, per se, its just a racial generalisation/stereotype being perpetuated.

hmmm. what *is* racist, if not this?

N_RQ, Monday, 6 June 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

I like how these threads become Cracker Central in the span of about six minutes.

don't you mean "every thread on ILM ever"?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Do those infamous Gun Club lyrics count? I'm still not sure of JLP's background/intent/defense regarding those.

His lyrics mimicked the writing of much older country/folk songs, but he was far from racist -- would a racist have a massive reggae collection like he did?

Ian Riese-Moraine. Sweeter than a lorry load of white Toblerones. (Eastern Mantr, Monday, 6 June 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

would a racist have a massive reggae collection like he did?

haha...American history has proven it's IMPOSSIBLE for someone with racist views to enjoy black culture and music!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 6 June 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

to cross-reference posts, this contention - "Personally speaking, I don't believe Johnson was using the term in an offensive way. -- ppp (pp...), June 6th, 2005.

I can't defend this song in specific as I've never heard it, but the word nigger has more impact and has an inherent connotation of racism and subservience. There are literary uses for it, and plenty of white people have used it in that sense, like "Rock n roll nigger" and "woman is the nigger of the world." I personally don't believe anybody has the right to outright ban words, although it is tacky that it's thrown around for shock value so losely.

________, Monday, 6 June 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

I don't know any of the songs here, but that Violent Femmes lyric is pretty great.

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 6 June 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Joan Baez's hysterical song during the ritual child abuse witch-hunt, "Play Me Backwards":

"There's a sacrifice in an empty church of sweet li'l baby Rose/
And a man in a mask from Mexico is peeling off my clothes"

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 6 June 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

never liked patti smith's rock n roll nigger. just seemed like an excuse to say the n-word or use it in some inflammatory fashion for some kicks. and when lennon said women are the nigger of the world, what would that make black women 'of the world' then? i mean i know the logical answer, but ugh. that lou reed song i cant remember the title of is even fucking stupider.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

"Walk on the Wild Side"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

no, 'i wanna be black'. thats an idiotic song.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Japan have a similar track?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

"Wish You Were Black"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I Wanna Be Black is really embarrassing.

what's that wierd horrible Lou Reed live album? the one with the cartoon cover? Sheesh that's an uncomfortable listen....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Take No Prisoners

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

xp- Wasn't Gano married to/shacked up with the striking black lady out of Violent Femmes side project (ugh! I hate that expression) Mercy Seat? [is that name right? I can't remember]

snotty moore, Monday, 6 June 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I thought 'I Wanna Be Black' was a pisstake?

robertw, Monday, 6 June 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

I thought 'I Wanna Be Black' was a pisstake?

does that make it less offensive?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

I remember reading an NME (I think) interview with someone like Snoop Dogg back in the day and the interviewer (being in awe or something) saying he understood what Lou Reed meant about wanting to be black. I couldn't believe that somone working as a music journalist could miss the point of that song.

robertw, Monday, 6 June 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh no it's still offensive for sure.

robertw, Monday, 6 June 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

isnt that reed song just the rock version of kerouac's on the road?

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Folks, you really don't have to dig too deep to find racist song lyrics. I don't know why we're so inclined to quote them here.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

I suppose it's not that racist but Ray, rather pointedly I think, left it off the recent "Village Green" reissue

but, um, it wasn't on village green in the first place.

Indeed, but it's part of the same batch of songs and was released briefly on "The Great Lost Kinks Album" alongside most of the bonus tracks on the "Village Green" reissue - so leaving it off the reissue was deliberate choice on Ray's part.

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

... and then there's this. And what about The Stranglers' "Feel Like a Wog"??!?!??!?!?

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

q for dan perry, who do you think this post has turned into cracker central?

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

Hey, is this the white liberal guilt thread? Cool!

J (Jay), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

"black korea"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahaha can I answer the first question????

J kind of nails it; all of these threads turn into spasms of white liberal guilt slamming against white liberal defensiveness, to the point where I get the impression that no one really wants to hear anything from someone who isn't white.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Why is "I Wanna Be Black" offensive?

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

im not white....... but onwards! to cracker central!

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

I'd say this thread is digging pretty deep.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)
