xhuxk, Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

wait, i think "the only way is up" single is yazz.

and are "shake your thang" and "twist and shout" salt n pepa? i think so.

xhuxk, Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

i think your taste has been getting better with each passing year.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

temple of low men is great!

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

did you start talking to Kogan more or something? What do you credit for the change between FEEDTIME 4-EVA in '87 and putting them in like the 400s or something in Stairway To Hell?

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

62. ??? - honky tonk moon/young guns

that would be randy travis, and that was a great single.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

>did you start talking to Kogan more or something?,

yeah, and as i've written before, talking to him (and metal mike saunders, who convinced me how good poison were) (and reading people like james hunter and michael freedberg, who I found fascinating) definitely had an effect. but so did getting bored with going to see indie bands in bars, and the fact (i think) that pop radio was getting really good all of a sudden. (still no kix on these lists, though!) (but also, if anything - and if you look back at that '85 list, it SORT OF demonstrates this -- I'd always liked pop radio to begin with. those indie-crazy years were, if anything, sort of an anomaly; a break from listening to the radio. it's not like i was born an indie fan; i sort of BECAME one, for a while. I mean, I was a skinny tie new waver in 1979, but I was also buying rap and pop and metal records in 1980! so the pigfuck was the *real* change.)

> What do you credit for the change between FEEDTIME 4-EVA in '87 and putting them in like the 400s or something in Stairway To Hell? <

well, LOTS of records went higher and lower. I guess the thing didn't hold up (though who knows, maybe if i heard it now, it would wind up higher again!)

xhuxk, Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I guess I thought, after the top 40 was totally amazing in 1984, that it really started to suck for a couple years (in fact, i wrote a long essay in the voice about either '85 or '86 being the worst year ever for pop radio). i doubt i'd agree with that now, but it definitely was my impression at the time.

xhuxk, Sunday, 5 June 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

and at the same time, by 1988, i guess i sensed indie rock slowing down and spinning its wheels and turning into Indie Rock. It wasn't surprising me nearly as much anymore, and pop and dance and freestyle and house and rap were surprising me way more. so probably, in retrospect, i wound up underrating (at least for a while) some of those noisy art-punks i'd initially vastly overrated.

xhuxk, Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Dudu Pukwana was a saxophonist. Born in So. Africa, lived in London.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

"Mean Man's Dream" by Gore. Man, I'd love to have that on CD. I had the record that year and played it much. I'd digitize and stick satirical vocals on it now and ruin it for the few.

I still have my Rock City Angels vinyl. That came out with a huge hype and they never made another. Converted it to CD and when I put it on, it always poops out for me right after "Deep Inside My Heart."

George Smith, Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

I still love MDC's "Chicken Squawk" and Bongwater's "His Old Look" (or "His New Look," can't remember which), but I guess I can see where you were coming from.

mulitplatinum = mullet-platinum?

Pete Scholtes, Sunday, 5 June 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

according to google:

36. ??? - pump up chicago = Mr. Lee
50. ??? - body jackin' = Incredible Thang Band
49. (another latin freestyle group) - tell him i called/i'm over you = Sequal
65. ??? - weekend/just wanna dance = Todd Terry (whose album was called *To the Batmobile Let's Go*)

xhuxk, Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

14, ??? - get on the dance floor = Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock
61. ??? - party on plastic = Bootsy Collins

xhuxk, Sunday, 5 June 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

>102. iggy pop (was *cold metal* that year? or was that later? i'm not sure)<

actually I think this was *instinct* (and maybe "cold metal" was the single)? I reviewed that one in the Voice, and I also reviewed ac/dc's *blow up your video* and debbie gibson's *out of the blue,* and they all wound up being xgau consumer guide must-to-avoids, apparently (as did *gnr lies* and def leppard's *hysteria,* i just noticed on that other thread. hmm....)

xhuxk, Monday, 6 June 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

I thought "You Can Dance" came out in '87?

Xgau hates Debbie Gibson cuz he hasn't heard the 12"'s of "Shake Your Love" and "Only in My Dreams."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 6 June 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

>I thought "You Can Dance" came out in '87? <

yeah, probably, as did some other albums here. but since these lists were working lists to determine my pazz & jop votes, i was pretty clearly going by the famous p&j "year of impact not nessarily literal release date" rule.

xhuxk, Monday, 6 June 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

any house/acid/rap from uk was bad.
-- xhuxk (xedd...), June 5th, 2005.

lol
you listed half my albums and single sand i still play them.

picture disc fan, Monday, 6 June 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

I know a little about 1988

There might up two songs on this that xhuxk didn't already mention.. but I don't have time to do the checklist.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 6 June 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

(and yes, I still owe a couple of people this 2-CD.. I'm a flake.. I'm sorry and sorry. :( )

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 6 June 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

Wow, no Death Angel, Toxik, or Crumbsuckers?

*dodges flying frying pan from Xhuxk's direction*

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 6 June 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

>any house/acid/rap from uk was bad<

hey! the cookie crew have a track on that house music box set, honest!

and "big fun" is by inner city.

xhuxk, Monday, 6 June 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

temple of low men is great as is Wishing Well.

look at what i did i took those "L"s
hung em on your head and rocked your bells.

*adjusts kangol*

Hunter (Hunter), Monday, 6 June 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

>any house/acid/rap from uk was bad<

And you picked M/A/R/R/S - Pump up the volume, and indeed PSB's introspective too.

Best year so far I'd say.

I think I have that techno-new dance sound of Detroit album, not too sure if it's the same one but any album with Detroit and techno in the title is usually a winner. That Fall album is 'I am kurious, orange' which was some kind of ballet soundtrack. The Todd Terry album is the sole reason I haven't got rid of my tape deck yet.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 6 June 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

Mine is a bit more updated, I guess :)
http://rateyourmusic.com/lists/list_view/list_id_is_16194

Apart from the first handful, not a good vintage.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 6 June 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

Album #86 may be Qareeb by Najma Akhtar (1987): a ghazal singer from the UK. (Best track: the beautiful "Dil Laga Ya Tha".)

Dudu Pukwana was in a band called Jabula, who were signed to the Virgin's mid-priced Caroline label in the mid-1970s... maybe in the wake of Osibisa.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 6 June 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Double Bummer was great as long as it avoided "songs" and backed up Ann Magnuson's monologues. (Of which there were only 4-5 total, but nevermind.) Her hilarious "Frank" was an absolutely classic Sinatra impression (NOT to say "impersonation".)

A few of MY as-yet-unmentioned favourites:

Slammin' Watusis (I think only me and Alex In NYC are familiar with it. My single fave until Daydream Nation late in the year.)
Last Exit - Iron Path
Uncle Sam - Heaven Or Hollywood
Original Concept - Straight From The Basement Of Kooley High
Pere Ubu - The Tenement Year

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 6 June 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

>Last Exit - Iron Path<

Actually, this is listed at #16, myonga.

As for Ubu, I stil don't remotely get the appeal of their comeback era stuff. Ah well; my loss I suppose...

xhuxk, Monday, 6 June 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

(in fact, i wrote a long essay in the voice about either '85 or '86 being the worst year ever for pop radio).

i don't suppose this is online anywhere, is it?

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 6 June 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Nah...the Voice archives only go back a few years (if that, these days). If I knew how to scan it, though, I would (even though I think the gist of the article is probably kind of embarrassing, by now.)

xhuxk, Monday, 6 June 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

>Original Concept - Straight From The Basement Of Kooley High<

Hadn't noticed this on Myonga's ommission list. -- I like it a lot, actually. But I don' t think I heard it til around 1999 or so, when I got ahold of the cassette.

xhuxk, Monday, 6 June 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

some stupid ommissions from my album list:

cinderella - long cold winter
the holy cows - we never heard of you either
joan jett and the blackhearts - up your alley
journey - greatest hits
16 bit- inaxycvgtgb

xhuxk, Monday, 6 June 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

No love for Wee Papa Girl Rappers, "Heat It Up"? That was a fun UK rap single.

No love for Boogie Down Productions or Stetsasonic?

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 6 June 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I think the Wee Papa Girl track made my '89 singles list or thereabouts.

And no. No love for BDP (after Scott La-Rock died anyway) or Stetsasonic. At all. Sorry!

xhuxk, Monday, 6 June 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

I think my favorites of this year are probably Daydream Nation and I'm Your Man, though Surfer Rosa would also make the list.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

No problem, Chuck. "Talkin' All That Jazz" had a corny lyric, but those Stets albums contain some amazing music.

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 6 June 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I'd also add TFUL282's Wormed By Leonard.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

love the way the leeds collective are all grouped together :

"
107. red lorry yellow lorry (possibly a best-of, but maybe not)
108. mekons
109. three johns
"

fluke - or genuine attention to detail ?

god bless the three johns.

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

I think maybe My Bloody Valentine were doing oh... something that year.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

Well, so were lots of other incredily boring bands, I'm sure (a few of which I was probably even liking at the time, come to think of it).

xhuxk, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Whatever.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

>love the way the leeds collective are all grouped together :

fluke - or genuine attention to detail ?

xhuxk, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

uh..not sure what happened there. i guess the board suddenly is hating my > and < signs again.. anyway, i was gonna say that the leeds connection was probably an accident, but who knows? and add that jelly bishops (#4 on the EP list) were also leedsites, i think -- a one-off side project of some mekons and/or 3 johns (incl langford probably) who made a better record than mekons or 3 johns that year

xhuxk, Tuesday, 7 June 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

>Original Concept - Straight From The Basement Of Kooley High<
Hadn't noticed this on Myonga's ommission list. -- I like it a lot, actually. But I don' t think I heard it til around 1999 or so, when I got ahold of the cassette.

-- xhuxk

Heh heh...that would be about five years after I found MY cassette copy! And two years after I LOST it, never to find another! Oh, well.

And yeah, I did overlook Last Exit on your original list, somehow. Strange...

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

57. golden eagles (? never heard of 'em!) = mardi gras indian troupe a la wild tchoupitoulas
79. *human music* (????) = homestead compilation
82. *thunder before dawn* (???) = indestructible beat of soweto 2 compilation
98. paranoise (???) = some kinda world-prog band

the singles are more difficult.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

"microphone fiend" is indeed eric b & rakim.

indie rock crested in '86, '88 was the year of watching the wave roll back. daydream nation and mudhoney were at least two horsemen of the apocalypse.

Edward III, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

2. *history of the house sound of chicago* (bcm germany 12-album box set)

There we go!

Eric H., Tuesday, 10 July 2007 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

cold lake was a fucking disaster

What a good job I kept mine, hurrah!

How could I possibly have missed that sizzling '88 Bellamy Brothers album?

cold lake was a fucking disaster

I've never understood this opinion at all -- It has really catchy songs that remind me of Blue Oyster Cult! And it was a brave move; if Celtic Frost had stayed glammy, I might still care about them now.

that sizzling '88 Bellamy Brothers album

Guess it must have been Country Rap! Which I recall being pretty nice, but was quickly supplanted on my shelf by Greatest Hits Volume III in 1989, which included its best songs and then some.

I had thought that Gigolo Tony was the last word in Country Rap...(or maybe Bobby Jimmy and the Critters)...

I probably should have been! I've been telling myself for a couple decades I should check him out, but I never got around to it. (I remember thinking a couple of his hits were good, but never delved further. Wasn't really listening to country radio in 1988, though; if I was, I guess I'd know him better.)
