The more bizarre and improbable the better. Thanks!

Kveldssanger is folk recorded by black metallers. Is that what you mean?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 9 June 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I dunno...? I need some guidance here. I have heard a few good things but the names are often long and hard to say, and keep escaping me. There's lots of it about but what's the best/craziest?

mole, how long have i been trying to get you to buy an ulver album? it's like pulling teeth. you might like this album. here is my review:

Agressor - Medieval Rites (Season of Mist-1999)

First: The sound of rain. Then the sound of a gently plinked guitar. Then the sound of Gollum. Then the sound of power chords. Then the sound of...trumpets? All in the first 30 seconds. Then death metal drums, human screams, and an unearthly vocal choir. And then the sound of horses galloping. Then operatic crooning and ace noodling. More trumpets. Then churchbells. Next: Concorde-fast tech death. Then: "The Woodguy-vs-The Black Beast", your standard ages-of-old folk song of indeterminate ethnic origin featuring acoustic guitar, flute, and the subtle sounds of an ominous wind. Next: More speedy grumblings and fretfully tricky guitar work. Then: extra evil evil. Along with wolves howling, monkish chants, and heroic mountain-top soloing. Snarls. Gnashing of teeth. The sound of a campfire burning. More dark folk. A fiddle! Then more hateful riffs. Then the lyrics: "Ancient breed, spacemen, hallucination, a twisted vision, chariot of fire, flying saucers, people from star, or maybe they are god from the sky". Then a King Diamond cover. Then more flutes. And a jew's harp! Then more desecration of all that is holy. Then swinging horns, deathlessly crunchy riffs, and klezmer fiddle. Screams. Three seconds of operatic soprano diva-ness. A coda of voice and fiddle. And last but not least: One minute and twenty seconds of soothing classical guitar that wafts into oblivion. And that, my friends, is how you make a French heavy metal album. `

check out misanthropy records' back catalog

manuel (manuel), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

actually, i think the gathering might belong here too. not to mention jefferson airplane for that matter and dropkick murphys, and anti-nowhere league covering "streets of london." and nazareth covering woody guthrie and/or joni mitchell. and judas priest covering joan baez. (so much of this depends on what you consider "folk" and "metal.")

xhuxk, Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

haha, Skyclad, of course

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

and kansas. and jethro tull. and horslips. and. uh,, big and rich even.

(not sure about steelye span, who i don't know if i've ever had it heard, but judging from what some people have told me i wouldn' t put it past them.)

xp

xhuxk, Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

seward, I WAS listening mate! I WAS. I have 'Nattens Madrigal'. Thanks to YOU! Do I like it? Erm, yes. It's pretty good if a little eccentrically produced. I have to be in the mood.

Obviously now people are telling me about Bergtatt and how it's SO much better than Nattens Madrigal but it's just joined the long list of records I want to get.

And thank you all for piling in to give me some help here.

moley, Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

Agressor sounds very much the ticket.

moley, Thursday, 9 June 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

"if i've ever actually heard," I meant

also:

in extremo, "die verruckten sind in der stadt." ...honest!

the new ulver is, wow, unbelievable. i wouldn't know what to call it. "progressive art songs" maybe? just mindblowing. So spacey. my fave by them since Themes From William Blake's The Marriage Of Heaven & Hell.

that's cool, mole! you can't stop at one though! You miss a lot that way.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 9 June 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

jaxon, Ulver is definitely not recommended by me. Ulver comes in two bland, tasteless flavors. Early Ulver is pretty run of the mill black metal that isn't particularly special. Late Ulver is pretty bland, boring dark ambient sounding stuff for goths who smoke weed.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

disclaimer: I haven't heard the newest Ulver album yet.

other disclaimer: I really don't like much metal other than Opeth.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Ah, this is where I should have posted the Ulver story! (Scott, a friend picked up the new Ulver album after hearing just a minute or two of it at a local record store this evening!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

I was just gonna say Opeth's Blackwater Park (folk METAL) and Damnation (FOLK metal) and Agalloch's The Mantle (FOLK METAL). Comus, maybe, too?

Scott Gruender, Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

mickey, have you heard Kveldssanger?

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

jaxon, I haven't. my flirtation with metal was brief and unsatisfactory. I honestly tried to get into it numerous times, and sometimes with moderate success, but I eventually realized I was pretty much fooling myself and there's very little metal that I do like.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

(xp) yeah, if all of these 'folk metal' clowns would just rock comus they'd learn something.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 9 June 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised the black metal dudes haven't come in on this thread with some suggestions.

moley, Thursday, 9 June 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

You bastard! Every time I look at the thread title, 'More Than Words' keeps popping into my head. That aside, how about things in the vein of Children of God-era Swans? Heard some Ginnungagap recently that had good Jarboe-esque vocals over some pretty heavy sub-bass drones. Think they re-invent themselves for each release though, I dunno what the rest of their stuff is like.

35 posts in and no one has mentioned Tenhi yet! I can vouch for their first album Kauam as being pure folk-metal bliss.

(xp) yeah, if all of these 'folk metal' clowns would just rock comus they'd learn something.

I was thinking of Comus when I read this thread, but I wasnt sure if I would be chastized... but given Comus, is there anything remotely like it that I should check out?

nothingleft (nothingleft), Thursday, 9 June 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

I know that Opeth's My Arms Your Hearse is titled after a line from a Comus song, but I've never heard any Opeth! I was wondering if there was an audible influence there at all?

can't think of anything modern that's remotely like them, but jan dukes de grey mice and rats in the loft is sort of similar. more proggy, less crazed.

nope. opeth are as dull as paint drying.

The Tea Party! First three LPs are great, especially The Edges Of Twilight, their 2nd. It's just filled to capacity (and beyond) with bouzoukis and hurdy-gurdys and balalaikas and Mellotrons and even Roy Harper himself. 31 different instruments in total!
