this is the thread to talk about simon cowell's band of popera singers!! who's heard their version of "unbreak my heart"? i haven't!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I have never heard one note from them, but I'd imagine they'd go down a treat with all of the housewives who buy Josh Groban cds.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

andreas bocelli!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Should I go see IL DIVO live?

something about dan aykroyd coming out of a coconut (deangulberry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

haha i love you s1ocki

geeta, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

I was forced to listen to this a week or two ago. The Unbreak my Heart sung in Spanish was the only thing I can remember, as I was trying to formulate a polite reaction that was suitable for all present company. It sounded just like what you'd expect: American Idolers trying to sing in an operatic fashion and miserably failing

ACTUAL FRONTLINE REPORTING:

delightful old lady brandishing il divo cd: have you heard them yet?

TREAT YOURSELF!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

I cannot imagine this CD sounding like anything other than Satan's hordes raping your womenfolk.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

even though i have to adjust the positions on our billboard display every week, i perform the task with my brain shut off half the time so i don't really know much about the charts, but my impression of il divo, at least in my little corner of the burbs, was that the hype had already passed.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

:(

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

they're no josh groban, slocki!

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Hulkster, I heard a similar exchange one time while browsing around Borders, except it involved a middle-aged woman looking for the Los Lonely Boys CD. And "amazing" was the adjective of choice. And, um, no props for the voicework were offered. She was totally street teamin', tho.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

If someone described me as being "no Josh Groban" I would kill myself.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

old lady street teams!

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

(Because getting outsung by Josh Groban is directly analogous to getting outrun by Stephen Hawking.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

When I was in high school, I worked at The Nature Company and we had a small selection of World Music, Jazz and New Age. One day, these two old ladies came up to me and said, "Do you have any Yanni? I just love Yanni. He puts me right to sleep."

Simple pleasures, I guess.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

I eagerly await the PAUL ANKA ON MYSPACE press release.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

My aunt always tells me I look like Josh Groban.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

There's already an Il Divo knock off -- The Ten Tenors. They rock a cover of Queen's "Bicycle Race".

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

All you lucky people have still to hear G4, who are only half as rich and evil as that supergroup G8.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

my friend just played me that paul anka stuff!! i think i may have... liked it?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

some of it wasn't bad, actually.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

it was very... '90s.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

I'd imagine they'd go down a treat with all of the housewives who buy Josh Groban cds

My mom loves Il Divo and Josh Groban. She originally wanted the Il Divo CD for Mothers' Day, but she ended up buying it herself, therefore sparing me the embarrassment of having to show my face in HMV and buy it. I bought her a gift certificate instead.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

> My aunt always tells me I look like Josh Groban.

I've gotten that a few times as well ...

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

Wait, this is really #1? I thought Billboard didn't release their charts until Thursday? It was #10 this past week. How did it jump so high?

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

it didn't, I don't know what slocki's doing about. Coldplay are going to be #1 this week.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

but my friend said it was #1!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

he might've meant some other chart, maybe?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

It's #1 on the Internet Albums chart, for instance.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

I cannot imagine this CD sounding like anything other than Satan's hordes raping your womenfolk.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

the ten tenors actually came first. they've been out for over a year.

we have il divo for instore play and it's fucking terrible but has provided a lot of entertainment. for example, fans of real opera come in to shop for real opera and remark upon how terrible it sounds. i put up a staff rec display that said "are we not men? we are not il divo!" and stuck the first devo CD on it but my manager made me take it down, too potentially insulting to il divo fans. who are touchy and have a sixth sense about the shamefulness of admitting they like such schlock. one lady insisted i tell her my honest opinion of it so i told her i thought it was terrible and she got defensive and huffy.

the paul anka covers cd, another instore play, also fucking sucks. but at least that is funny the first couple of times.
