For better or for worse, here's the Russian Futurists thread

I have no idea about this act.

I've never heard him, nor heard of him.

I only know it's a singular person due to my AMG search.

I only searched AMG because a friend of mine asked me (and other friends) what I know about "them".

The ILM search only turned up two items, the most relevant being:

What's the best (or biggest) band not listed on All Music?

Per the AMG piece, it sounds like something I might've liked years ago, but probably would be kind of bored with now.

But my friends really wants to know more.

Can you help?

Then again, I really like Nobody's cover of The Monkee's Porpose Song, so who knows...

Russian Futurists sounds like a happy snowman who makes hip-hop beats and then sings over them. Method of Modern Love has big chant-along beats and is great; Let's Get Ready to Crumble has rhythm and frosty synth-pop and is great; Our Thickness has this sudden soul vibe, like the snowman found a top hat and a cane and is traipsing across the stage a bit after listening to some combination of XTC's Oranges and Lemons and Al Green. It's also pretty great. These are not really must-hears but I find them surprisingly likable (I'm twee like that and they're good like that), and I think it says something that when I used to play them in a record store random 8-year-olds of various backgrounds would just up and start dancing like nuts.

all i've heard is 'our thickness,' which had some really strong moments and a nice sound but felt pretty samey after a while. which is exactly how i'd describe the live show as well.

two years pass...

I got Our Thickness at Penguin Music today and the clerk said "Good catch!" And so it is. Not as samey as I expected!

had you heard the other albums? He's wrung the formula ever more mercilessly with each release but I imagine i'd like Our thickness if I hadn't heard the band before. maybe.

tremendoid, Sunday, 12 August 2007 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

I'm new to him but if this is his formula then I like it.

2for25, Sunday, 12 August 2007 08:11 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, it's 'up my alley' too, but method of modern love is where the choons are at.

tremendoid, Sunday, 12 August 2007 10:45 (eighteen years ago)

I will look for that one, thanks!

"A Telegram From The Future" and "Karkarodon Karkarius" are my jams! I see there's a forthcoming album The Weight's On The Wheels listed on RateYourMusic.

listening to me, myself and rye on spotify - did they rerecord the tracks for this? the production sounds a lot cleaner than I remember it being; I always thought method of modern love was almost unlistenably murky (tho still great obv)

bump. 'cos summer 2010 is release of new album; been listening to Method Of Modern Love this morning, and thinking that it must be the grand-daddy of chillwave/glo-fi.

Also, nabisco comment up thread!!!

New album is surprisingly good....first thing I've ever liked by them. Still, you need to have a high tolerance for overly sunny, almost twee electro...
