Beyond classic for two reasons:

A) Every song (seriously, all of them) is fantastic
B) The video for "Sweet Dreams" created my first rock-star crush. In fact, my first crush ever. Which may explain my sordid attractions from then on...

GALLAGHER: 'LIVE 8 WILL NEVER WORK'

NOEL GALLAGHER is convinced LIVE 8 will never achieve its lofty aim of persuading politicians from the world's richest countries to eliminate debt owed by poorer nations.

The outspoken OASIS guitarist believes rock stars simply don't have the influence needed to affect the G8 decision makers - and believes all their hard work will be in vain.

He says, "Correct me if I'm wrong, but are they hoping that one of these guys from the G8 is on a quick 15 minute break at Gleneagles (in Scotland) and sees ANNIE LENNOX singing SWEET DREAMS and thinks, 'F**k me, she might have a point there, you know?'

"KEANE doing SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW and some Japanese businessman going, 'Aw, look at him... we should really f**king drop that debt, you know.'

"It's not going to happen, is it?"

The track or the album? Slam-dunk classic, either way.

Have I already ranted about the greatness of "I Could Give You (A Mirror)"? Seriously. Rocks hard and just goes batshit insane in the last minute. Meticulously layered production gives exceptional headphone.

"Love Is A Stranger" also more than a little okay.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

"I Could Give You (A Mirror)" is by far my favorite Eurythmics song of all time. I thought I was alone. Exposes the "1980's production was tinny and dumbed-down" myth as a total fucking sham.

Hoorah to you, sir!

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

Memo to Noel Gallagher: Dude, Dave Stewart laughs at you. Thanks for playing.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

Yup. Go beat up your brother or something and leave us alone for a bit, Noel. We're busy being uninterested in you.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

"Mirror" is amazing. How did RCA manage not to release it as a single?

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, guys, I'm with Noel on that one! (Dave "Spiritual Cowboys" Stewart laughing at anyone would amuse me...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:26 (twenty years ago)

love is a stranger is far and away my favourite eurythmics track. the whole album is pretty good.

x-post RE: "I could give you...

Because they were dumb enough to use it up as a B-Side for "Sweet Dreams".

Perhaps it was a bit edgy? "Monkey Monkey" was also a b-side, as I recall...

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:33 (twenty years ago)

Ned: Aside from the dubious wisdom of being "with Noel" on anything, he's just being loutish there. "It won't wehk, y'know ::buuuurp::" Great. Thanks for the analysis, chief.

Dave is an oddly wobbly solo flyer given that he's a fine producer, an underrated axeman, and was genius at keeping Annie honest. Sans Dave, she wallows in schmaltz. They really are at their best together.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Say, startrekman, haven't you asked this question before?

Is "Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics Classic or Dud

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

Much has also been discussed here: Eurythmics-Dreams......worth another look....

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

he's just being loutish there

I realize this is a derail, but much as I'm in agreement with the ideals I'm quite *beyond* cynical about what Live 8 is exactly supposed to achieve in practical terms. I could go on but I'll spare you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

No need to extrapolate, Ned. Noel is OTM on how stupid Live 8, is, I just wish he had picked a better strawman. Like, say, Travis, for example.

"Travis is for the children! The Children!"

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

What JJ said.

Ned, as ever, your honesty shames me. I'd be all rooting Noel on too if he'd stick to beating up on the Keanes of the world.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

", is,"

OK, no more liquor for me this evening. Well, not much more...

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

Damn drunks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

Who yous callin a drunk, mishter? I'm an alcoloholish!

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

Well done thou good and faithful tippler.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:19 (twenty years ago)

As soon as I crawl back onto this barstool, I'm going to try and shake your hand...

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

>"I Could Give You (A Mirror)"

the b-side version was very different stripped down demo version which I like just as much as the album version

also seek "Let's Just Close Our Eyes", fantastic minimal demo of "The Walk". sounds like conny plank w/pre-acid synth lines.

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 23 June 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

Must...find...45...and compare. So excited!

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

every tune on this album is amazing. the end. whats lets just close our eyes on again? The 1st chorus of I could give you is the most amazing stomp funk thing. you just want it to go on and on and on. its uch a shame when the "i could give you a mirror" breakdown bit comes in.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 23 June 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

I prefer "Touch" but it's a question of degrees.

Re the comment upthread about Dave Stewart keeping Annie Lennox "honest" – it's the opposite. Stewart kept her dishonest, which is a great thing. Her voice was always too redolent of Las Vegas to take seriously as a vehicle of passion.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

Alfred, thanks for the redaction. Sophistry and semantics get a bad rap, and imho your post above makes a very elegant argument for their continued value. Rah writers!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Er, thanks!

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear. That did read as a bit of aan accusation, didn't it?

I really mean it though - those sorts of refinements matter, and yours not only struck me immediately as bullseye OTM but has already changed the way I think of Lennox-Stewart.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

No I understood, Roger; it's all good!

But, yeah, to expand on your point, Lennox is a phony, in a good way. Christgau once compared her to Shirley Bassey, which strikes me as apt.
