The first in the promised mixtape write-up series, up as part of this week's update. Anyone got anything to say?

Tom, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

CAN I DO THE NEXT ONE?

ethan, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A couple of people e-mailed me wanting to get involved. Basically the articles will go up in the order I get them, with a tie-breaker if I have more than one pending being whichever was most different from the previous one.

Tom, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This is Officially The Best Idea Ever. I've been thinking about putting stuff up in Art Of The Mix, but despite documenting tapes it never really seemed to get a feel of the emotion behind them. This, however, looks like a great opportunity to get some depth behind it.

(And The Telescopes being the best band *ahem* EVAH isn't just a lovely thing to believe, it's true! True, I tell you... bah)

One thing: the tape you did was one you made yourself, so am I right in presuming that you are still allowed to write about tapes other people made for you? To be honest, I'd love to do one, and I probably would do it about one of my own, but I have billions to choose from...

emil.y, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tapes/CDs can be of any origin - your own, made for you, free on the front of Cosmo or a Special K packet, found abandoned in the street or a junk shop...

Tom, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, this is a swell idea. I'm just curious; when was the last time you listened to the tape before you decided to write the piece? Has it been 14 years?!

Also, you have an interesting line in there: "Listening to it is like seeing an old ancestral skull in a museum - you regard it with awe and respect, but you wouldn't try to get it to talk to you." Is it because you're wary of it, or because you already know what it would say?

Clarke B., Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought the idea was that you had to do a tape which was made for you by another ilxer (and you had to do one which would go to another ilxer as well), and that Tom was going to decide who was doing who?

gareth, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, dont know where that idea came from cos it would mean more work for me! No, originally it was going to be tapes made by other people for other people and hopefully this will still be the central strand but I thought I'd widen the remit while keeping the central idea - limited writing time - intact.

Clarke - no the last time I'd listened to it was probably in 1993 or so, before it got lost. The reason you wouldnt converse with the ancestral skull is because it's dead, prosaically.

Tom, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ok tom, that does make more sense. i'll root around and see what i've got

gareth, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Blimey, I'm not fishing out tapes I made when I was 17, I'd never live it down.

DG, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wuss.

anyway, the first tape i chose was a baaaaaaaaad idea. i'll have to find another.

jess, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DG, theres always that tape i made you

gareth, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

which, if i remember rightly, was one of the very few tapes i've done with no dance music at all!!!

gareth, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess - write about the one which was a baaaad idea. That is one of the points of the piece.

Pete, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I have a copy of the tape?

DV, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DV you certainly can but I warn you the sound quality is very low. I wasn't sure during this playback if it would make it.

Tom, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll leave it then.

I will almost certainly do an instant C90 review article for you, though. I've a Frank's deadline coming up and I'm desperate for copy.

DV, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

would you take reviews of mix CDs or do they have to be C90s?

DV, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

CDs are fine as I think it says in the rules. But C90 Go! was a snappier and more sadly referential feature title.

Tom, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pete: i actually have the whole thing finished, but as it was a tape given to me by my current girlfriend - who has a habit of reading all my stuff - pumped full of regrettable INDIE = i was very evil indeed = jess would be in trouble.

jess, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cant you credit it to Popshots?

Tom, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

popshots would never say bad things about some of these songs. it's regrettable twice over because i got some really funny one-liners off.

jess, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i mean, on some level, i know that the fact that i managed to sneak in a reference to "Transylvania 65000" while writing about kristen hersh must be heard. on the other, i like having a girlfriend.

jess, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This irrational jealousy of my obviously superior musical taste should stop, too. Like, YESTERDAY.

Obviously, if Jess badmouths his gurl's tape, then his gurl should be given space to voice her complaints as well. FITE!

David Raposa, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

quiet you.

jess, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like yr. point about Teenage Riot's imagery of lazy fogies waiting for The Kids to wake them. What woke me up was your assertion that this is still the position taken by the "hey hey my my r&r will never etc. etc." hold-outs (my own semi-reluctant spot on the dial). Goner Records, a great garage-punk label in Memphis, goes one further and abandons SY's weary c'mon kiddies rhetoric & instead advocates ageist isolationism: their tragic motto is "If the Kids Don't Hate It, It Ain't Rock & Roll".

fritz, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Goner Records have the right idea.

Tom, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

b00mb0x is engaged in a CD mix spitting contest thats beginnging to look a little interesting

pootchie, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to publicly declare that I finally listened to the tape Gareth made for me hurrah! It's only taken me 6 months!

DG, Monday, 4 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Mini-discs? Are they excluded? I only ask because no-one has ever done me a mix-tape/CD but my girlfriend has done me several mix-MDs.

David, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everything from a wax cylinder to an MP3 playlist is allowed.

Tom, Tuesday, 5 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HELLO anyone who wants do write this - if you've got time to do one before Sunday then that would be great! Only one person need do this of course.

Tom, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

TOM: I PROMISE THEE SOMETHING BY TONITE. THY WILL BE DONE. AMEN.

jess, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked this article a lot, and it's funny how close Tom's tape was to the ones I used to make back then.

However, it had a lot of Inspirals on there for someone who claims indifference to them at the time.

Tom is probably in denial or has repressed memories of Inspirals fandom. Eventually he'll probably wake in the middle of the night to find himself wearing a "Cool as Fuck" t-shirt that he had no memory of owning up til then -- and go completely mad.

NicoLars, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I found it odd too. I think what it was is that I was compiling the songs I liked but didnt already have from the Festive 50, and since Peel's listeners clearly wuvved the Inspirals there was plenty of Inspirals action going down. Also when I made the tape it was the year of baggy and you were meant to like them, ahem.

Tom, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Excuses, excuses...

NicoLars, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just admit you liked them, Tom. It will make things easier for you later. ;-)

(Second link is the correct one!!)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone else done these besides the six that are on Freaky Trigger (Ewing/Matos/Kellman/Raggett/Wolk/Graham)? They are fun to read.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. C did one (again for FT) which isn't linked to in the archives.
