Songs you Never Need to hear EVER Again!

I'm sitting in an internet cafe right now, and they're playing 'Love Shack' by ye olde B-52's. A fine tune, I suppose (though light years from their finest hour), but does *anyone* really need to hear this ever again? Isn't it time to retire it? I think so.

There are many songs by the Beasties that need never again vibrate my eardrums but the number one offender is "So Watcha Want". I tell you what I want, what I really really want; for that song to vanish into a wandering singularity.

(Also, "Wannabe". It is no longer amusing to snicker about how M likes it in the face or how V is easy but doesn't cum for free.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

I would rather hear "Love Shack" for the millionth time than 99% of anything on Classic Rock Radio, but then I love The B-52's and have no attachment whatsoever to The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd or Bon Jovi.

"Hey Ya"

COME ON ILX (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

I had this about "Come on Eileen", to the point where I had it 'off the list' on our wedding DJ's list (he prob thought eileen was a prev gf).

But having not heared it for 10 years, I enjoyed it at someone's wed recently.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

oh and never mind the face business, what about "G, like MC, who likes it on an E" ?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

Wonderwall.

Actually, I suspect anyone who lived in the UK between 1995 and 1997 would happily retire any Oasis songs from that era.

There are certain albums I've listened to so much I'll never need to actually HAVE them on again, if I want to listen to them, I can just REMEMBER them. Mr. Bungle California, Beck Odelay, etc.

(heh heh)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

I've only heard that one about three times, oddly enough. Once was a very bad frat-dude cover at a UCI coffee place.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

sweet child o mine, you shook me all night long, wild horses, welcome to the jungle, and just about anything on most jukeboxes...including, especially, most songs by the cars and anything by aerofuckingsmith

b b, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

I've only heard that one about three times, oddly enough.
Same here. It's pretty fresh to my ears.

I don't think anyone needs to hear "The Living Years" again, I suppose we've decided?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

not to derail, but has a thread been attemted t figure out why some entirely awful songs are, nevertheless, ingrained in our heads (and the heads of everyone ever near a radio ever)?

tried to search...but...

b b, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

Brown Eyed Girl and You Shook Me All Night Long seconded. Heard both at a wedding this past weekend.

Also:

most of the songs sung by steve n's boss.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

I want to make a mix of Joseph's "Also:" songs RIGHT NOW because they're all awesome.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

"Do They Know It's Christmas" (all versions)
"No Woman No Cry"

and maybe a few other Marley songs as well (altho' I'm thinking more here of songs that buskers should permanently retire which is I guess a different question)

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

"My Girl"
"Come As You Are"
"Radar Love"
"Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)"

PB, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

anything on legend clearly falls into my jukebox staples category, so big second on "no woman..." and i'll agree on the motown thing, thats what kills oldies radio for me...though i will always love "just my imagination"

b b, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

"Life's Been Good To Me So Far"/Joe Walsh

Buck Rogers, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

Every Motown hit song ever written.

Yes yes, with the exception of a couple Supremes songs.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

His name is Prince, his songs are legion.

Rob Uptight (Rob Uptight), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Strummin my pain with his fingers
Singin my life with his words
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

Yea yea yea do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do

I heard he sang a good song,
I heard he had a style,
And so I came to see him and listen for a while
And there he was this young boy
Stranger to my eyes

Chorus:
Stromin my pain with his fingers (one time, one time)
Singin my life with his words (two times, two times)
Killing me softly with his song
Killing me softly with his song
Telling my whole life with his words
Killing me softly with his song

I felt all flushed with fever
Embarrased by the crowd,
I felt he found my letters and read each one out loud,
I pray that he would finish
But he just kept right on

Repeat chorus

Wooooooaaaa ohhhhhhhhhh laaaa la la la la la la ohhh la laaa woaaa laa
Aaaalaaaaaa

"America We Stand as One" -- well, maybe once again just to laugh at.

otm on "Love Shack." Let me add:

Celebration.

svend (svend), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

How about anything from this dude

http://www.geocities.com/telephonepolesmusic

jj, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

"Stairway to Heaven" is like aural furniture to me. Not the comfy sofa, either...more like that weird chair you keep meaning to get rid of. After slow-dancing to this tune in Junior High School (including the fast parts) there was really nothing else this song could do for me.

p.j. (Henry), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

I prefer "The Rain Song" to "Stairway to Heaven" anyway.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

Anything by Van Morrison or Bob Marley - enough already.

darin (darin), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

"We Built This City" - Starship
"Mr. Roboto" - Styx
anything by Destiny's Child
"Jumpin' Jack Flash" - Rolling Stones

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

GALANG

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

"You Oughta Know" is also still awesome.

I'm not sure that I can still defend "Zombie" though.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

Fair enough.

I just remember the "you, You, YOU. OUGHTA KNOW!" hiccup in the refrain would haunt my brain for days....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

Add "You Oughtta Know" to the list of songs I never need to hear again...along with most of Morrisette's other tunes as well.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

here's a couple i really could do with being lost into another dimension :

the final countdown - europe
jump - van halen

both of these were just looped too many times on the 6th form stereo system week after fucking week in my formative years. thank fuck i could go home and listen to cabaret voltaire to clean out the ear worms.

i used to feel the same way about a certain marillion song .. but akira the don recently revived the melody on his latest single and i realised that my hatred had subsided.

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

B-b-but "It was a slap in the face/How quickly I was replaced/Are you thinking of me when you fuck her???"! So bitter!

"One Hand In My Pocket" is somewhat silly, though. I changed the lyrics to "I've got one hand in my pocket/And my other hand is in my other pocket" and it became much less insufferable.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

Any of the 8 singles from RHCP's Californication. God I really learnt to hate that album. As well as any of the... whatever singles on Moby's Play.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

"Honey" and "Run On" are still great, sorry.

Actually, so are "Scar Tissue" and "Californication".

I'm (not) spurprised no one's said "Wait (The Whisper Song)". That has quickly reached my saturation point solely based on hearing it booming out of car stereos.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

Bitter? Yes, no question. But the irony of it always made me laugh!

"Are you thinking of me when you fuck her???"

Well, you certainly are....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

"One Hand In My Pocket" is somewhat silly, though. I changed the lyrics to "I've got one hand in my pocket/And my other hand is in my other pocket" and it became much less insufferable.

In college we used to sing "I've got one hand in my pocket / and, um, well, never mi-EEEnd".

I could happily go the rest of my life without ever hearing "YMCA", "Champagne Supernova", "She's So High", or "The Greatest Love Of All" again. Ever.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

"Move Your Ass" and "Hyper Hyper"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

But that's the whole point of the song, jsoulja! She's writting this angry, scathing missive that boils down to "I am a broken mess because you've moved on and I haven't so I'm going to try to blame you for it"; it ends up revealing a lot more about her than it does him, especially since it doesn't seem that he cheated on her, he just dumped her.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

ok, ok

"Don't Worry Be Happy"

Not so much for the song, but the fact that every time I hear it, I get the face of Robin Williams stuck in my head (from the video), which DEFINITELY makes me NOT happy....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I'm not going to defend that song or Robin Williams.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

Dan, if you send me "Walking on Sunshine", I will fill your inbox with Minor Threat and Placebo MP3s, labeled as MP3s of Cop Shoot Cop "White Noise" tracks. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

(By the way, did you want me to gmail those to you or YSI? The C$C, I mean.)

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

Never meant to talk about the quality of any of those songs, just saying that i've listened to'em so much that i don't need to do it again. Which is the point to this topic.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

"Pride (In the Name of Love)"

And I like U2.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

ugh..I second that U2 song. And yeah, 'YMCA' and 'Celebration' make me wanna shove an icepick up my nose.

cicatrix, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

"Time Of Your Life" - Green Day
"Bitch" - Meredith Brooks
"All That She Wants" - Ace Of Base
"(Whoop) There It Is" - who the hell knows anymore
"Oh What A Night" - Four Seasons
"Come Out & Play (Keep Em Separated) - The Offspring

and I would have said "Khe Sanh" by Cold Chisel, except after having not heard it for 3 years since I left Australia, & then receiving a classic Oz rawk Cd for my birthday, I actually found myself being able to enjoy it again. I think that means I have to shoot myself in the head. I don't even know if it's a good song anymore, it's become such a parody.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

Ewww. I'd forgotten about that Meredith Brooks song.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

I can't remember the last time I heard "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks (but that doesn't mean I want to hear it anytime soon).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

cicatrix, Thursday, 30 June 2005 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

The songs I listed were played every Thursday night (free beer night) at college, for three years running. No joke. "Bitch" was a song my fellow female collegians enjoyed playing every single damn day, ad infinitum.

I need to never hear them EVER again, for as long as I live.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:39 (nineteen years ago)

Argh. I forgot:
"No Rain" - Blind Melon
"Shine" - Collective Soul
"Black Hole Sun" - Soundgarden

Actually, pretty much the whole second wave of grunge (NWOAG).

I just made that up, and it seems pretty stupid, even to me.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

"Black Hole Sun" is a whole thread in itself. My therapist & I are still working through my issues with THAT little effort...

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:49 (nineteen years ago)

NWOAG, as a collection of letters, reminds me of the exclamation PHWOAR!

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:49 (nineteen years ago)

It sounds like something that comes with smegma.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

"Okay, so we have one Smegma, hold the mayo, and a side order of NWOAG, light on the mustard. Woulja like fries to go with your order, sir?"

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

Descendents to thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

It reminds me of HWOARGH!, which, coincidentally, is what I use to phonetically describe projectile vomiting.

Now, I know that I was right all along.

To borrow from the U2 thread, I also never need to hear "When Love Comes To Town" again...

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 30 June 2005 02:02 (nineteen years ago)

I would also ask the DJ not to play 'Brand New Key' by whatsername.

It's the worst kind of earworm I've ever experienced. Took me TWO DAMN WEEKS to get it out of my head, and even as I type I can feel it coming back...

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 30 June 2005 02:06 (nineteen years ago)

Who Let the Dogs Out.

Adam Harrison-Friday, Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

Somewhat obscure, but the live version of Elvis Costello's "Just A Memory"

For some reason, that song is on the muzak at my office, it's played 3 times a day. I always hated that song, now I REALLY hate it.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

i just heard that song where Bruce Springsteen begs everyone to "come on and work for verizon"...which reminds me it should be put away

b b, Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

Goat(boy)'s "Great Life" of course. I forgot that I was going to post it in here.

How can anyone be THAT DESPERATE for DAVE COULIER?!

I don't know but the fact that it's about Dave Coulier just makes the song that much more awesome. Maybe he's got a dick made of heroin.
