Codeine vs Low

Who do you like more. Me? I don't know. I just bought a Codeine album (on cd, geezz!) and my dad was asking me why I bought it. He likes Low more. I bought it because I do like them (not my favorite, but yeah) and Chirs Brokaw is in it.

I think he's a better guitarist than drummer, but it's hard to tell because he was supposed to be drumming that slow.

"Barely Real" is so much better than "Frigid Stars" and "The White Birch"

On the strength of "Barely Real" alone, I would take Codeine over Low.

I still listen to Codeine but I lost interest in Low circa Curtain Hits the Cast. Codeine is way better.

Yes, Low has this voluminous catalog, and I just don't have the wherewithal to plow through it to find the gems. I didn't mind "The Great Destroyer" but I don't think I'd go out of my way to hear any of their stuff.

There's a band called Narrows (or maybe The Narrows) from the PacNW that is doing the Codeine thing these days. Really great band, I was happy to hear that they exist. There's a record with a skull on the cover it that I like.

*befuddled* I like both v. much but to be honest I hadn't listened to Codeine in years, so I ripped the discs and sold them back earlier this year. I could never see myself doing that with Low.

i think the white birch and frigid stars are better than a lot of low albums, but NOT If I Could LIve In Hope, Secret Name, Songs for a Dead Pilot, or Curtain Hits the Cast.

Idaho's Three Sheets to the Wind was pretty good. I think Ned did some of the reviews for this band on allmusic. You can usually find their records for rather cheap.

the first idaho album (Year after Year) and the Palms ep would be the most comparable; the caroline albums were a lot louder (though no less good). there is something good about all of their albums but I think Year after Year and Alas are their best (and most like say, Codeine or Low, though not really)

i never understood why idaho were never a bigger deal. they're closer to a red house painters or american music club than low or codeine, i think, but people always lump all of these bands together anyway. you can't go wrong with three sheets to the wind, alas, hearts of palm, or levitate. their music gets kind of same-y, but that's the worst i'll say about it.

Low by about a million miles, tho that is to be expected b/c Low is one of my all-time favorites. I'll still rep hard for Codeine, as well as Labradford, Bedhead & others. I never cared much for Idaho. There was an Ann Arbor-based band called Flashpapr that did this kind of stuff rather well.

Yeah, I think the tension between this and the domesticity of the band is what gives them a lot of depth other so-called slowcore bands struggle to match. I like Shearwater from the upthread Wikipedia list, too, but I don't think of them as slowcore at all, unless Talk Talk are slowcore!

Oh, and last time I saw Low, Pedro the Lion opened for them.
