Which record was it? I prefer "Barely Real". -- gygax! (gygax0...)
That's the one I just bought.

On the strength of "Barely Real" alone, I would take Codeine over Low.

NO! Frigid Stars LP is flawless.
I still listen to Codeine but I lost interest in Low circa Curtain Hits the Cast. Codeine is way better.

*befuddled* I like both v. much but to be honest I hadn't listened to Codeine in years, so I ripped the discs and sold them back earlier this year. I could never see myself doing that with Low.

Idaho's Three Sheets to the Wind was pretty good. I think Ned did some of the reviews for this band on allmusic. You can usually find their records for rather cheap.

I'm feeling nostalgic suddenly, but I've forgotten or disowned much of this stuff. OMG, Idaho! American Music Club! Early-mid nineties slow rock : what's your take??
― u s steel, Monday, 16 February 2009 02:56 (seventeen years ago)
The White Birch was the first Sub Pop record I ever bought. It goes without saying that the shop where I picked it up closed several years ago.
― post-schadenfreude (fukasaku tollbooth), Monday, 16 February 2009 11:19 (seventeen years ago)
been listening to a lot of codeine lately. frigid stars hasn't held up so well, but white birch still sounds great. shame that immerwahr hasn't gone on to do something else

― Zeno, Monday, 16 February 2009 12:05 (seventeen years ago)
lyrically too
white birch beautifully engineered.. one of my favourite drum sounds of all time
― electrodribble sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 February 2009 12:09 (seventeen years ago)
i like white birch, but i guess it sounds too clean for me, after i got used tothe louder and more chaotic Frigid Stars, which will always be my favourite

Low by about a million miles, tho that is to be expected b/c Low is one of my all-time favorites. I'll still rep hard for Codeine, as well as Labradford, Bedhead & others. I never cared much for Idaho. There was an Ann Arbor-based band called Flashpapr that did this kind of stuff rather well.
― 2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Monday, 16 February 2009 20:51 (seventeen years ago)
the thing about low that a lot of people don't seem remark about it how weird and sorta confrontational they are in a way. sparhawk seems like a pretty dark dude.
― Yo, I just copped dat brand new Manity Kane cd. (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 16 February 2009 20:54 (seventeen years ago)
Drowned in Sound is doing a week's worth of articles on slowcore bands, starting today.
― scott pgwp (pgwp), Monday, 16 February 2009 20:56 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I think the tension between this and the domesticity of the band is what gives them a lot of depth other so-called slowcore bands struggle to match. I like Shearwater from the upthread Wikipedia list, too, but I don't think of them as slowcore at all, unless Talk Talk are slowcore!
Oh, and last time I saw Low, Pedro the Lion opened for them.
― Lostandfound, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 00:08 (seventeen years ago)
Oh, anyway, Low over Codeine every time!
