"Since U Been Gone" vs. "Lala"

From "Don't You Think It's a Little Early for Your 2005 Top Eleven List?" where both songs are fairly popular pop-rock women-fronted cuts. And with both expressing very different ideas. Which do you like more? I have a feeling "Since U Been Gone" is gonna win in a landslide, but I've been more of a "lala" dude these days.

LaLa really sucks. As does Ashleek.

"Since U Been Gone" is one of the best tunes of the year.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

I thought this was about Layla sucking ass. I was so on board...

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Since U Been Gone >>>> Layla

deej.., Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

"Since U Been Gone" > "First" > "La La"

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

"first"?

deej.., Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Frist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

"First" = Lindsay Lohan.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Layla >>>>>>>>>>> Frist

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Why have I never heard "Lala"? I can't imagine it's better than "Since U Been Gone." Does someone want to e-mail or YSI it to me?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait is "First" the song they played over the closing credits of the Herbie movie? "Last"!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh is that the Herbie the luvbug jam? I only heard that once, it didn't seem as good as "lala" to me but I havent really given it a chance yet. I'm surprised people are so down on "lala."

deej.., Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

(Is "YSI it" redundant, like "ATM machine"?)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised people are so down on "lala."

Frank Kogan loves it.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

"La La" > "Since U Been Gone"

"OMG LOOK AN REALITY POP STAR HAS MADE TEH INDIEZOR!!!1"!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Kelly C. definitely has a better voice, but "Lala" is sleazy and badass.

deej.., Wednesday, 29 June 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Isn't LaLa in a shampoo commercial? If you haven't heard it, turn on the afternoon soap operas...I'm sure it'll run at least once. Or MTV.

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

I should have made this thread a few months ago, when both these songs were new and peaking.

deej.., Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I work in the afternoon, and I don't have cable!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

It's on prime time too, or it used to be. I dont have cable either and ive seen it. Its not really running on mtv any more anyway, the song is kinda old.

deej.., Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I found a site where they played the first minute of the song. It was okay. Based on that alone, "Since U Been Gone" kicks its ass. So does "Pieces of Me," actually.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I should've said, I don't actually watch TV ever anymore.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

I'd go for Since U Been Gone, though Lala's video is, well, hilarious. SHE IS DISRESPECTFUL TO DIRT.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait, maybe I did hear "Lala," because apparently Abby Poptext posted it. It didn't leave much of an impression, then.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

"La La" is pretty good, but it's no "Since U Been Gone." For one thing, Ashlee doesn't have the vocal chops Kelly does, so her belting doesn't come off as well. It sounds more strained (which gives it its own kind of neat quality, but anyway). Also, I can't for the life of me call to mind more than the chorus, whereas all of "Since U Been Gone" is great (verse, bridge, and chorus). They're both better than "First" (and so is LinLo's "Over").

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

"Since U Been Gone," easy.

Speaking of Lindsey Lohan, did anyone hear her Orange Bowl moment on the Ellen DeGeneres show last week? It wasn't as aggressive in its awfulness as Ashlee at the Orange Bowl, and it didn't have the same comeuppance factor after Joe Simpson's "she can sing, you just watch" post-SNL retort. But man, LL didn't come within a block of the melody, or any melody for that matter.

I forget which song it was; it wasn't "First."

Sorry if I'm derailing.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

whereas all of "Since U Been Gone" is great (verse, bridge, and chorus)

I've said it before, but one of the things that impresses me so much about "Since U Been Gone" is just what a perfectly constructed song it is. Every part does exactly what it's supposed to do.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Both are insipid shit, but I think I loathe "Lala" more, as Ashlee Simpson is entirely indefensible. It's also just such a goddamn LIE!

This is not to say that "Since U Been Gone" is much better, though.

Who buys Kelly Clarkson albums?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

"Since U Been Gone" is a love-letter to songwriters.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

fourteen years pass...

My local iHeartRadio pop music station plays “Since You Been Gone” so goddamn much and the song is like 20 years old. That and “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World. Do other pop music stations play random old songs like this or is it just 98.1 WKDD?

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 23:26 (six years ago)

I've never really understood all the love for "Since U Been Gone," either at the time or as an enduring notion. I don't remember "Lala" at all (if I ever knew it).

morrisp, Wednesday, 1 April 2020 02:09 (six years ago)

I don't listen to the radio much, so no Since U Been Gone for me. It was an enduring jam at the time though that got me through the back half of that decade. But my local grocery store often plays Breakaway on its in-store music and I get really wrapped up in that song.
