This came out on Tuesday I believe, how come nobody's talking about it.

Sounds fuckin' beautiful on first listen.

Cibula, where you at?

I knew this was a haikunym thread. Oh wait, yeah, where is he? It's on his list.

RS LaRue (RSLaRue), Friday, 1 July 2005 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

I'm here, baby, and it's beautiful. It was all recorded in 1999-2000, never released but recently-tweaked. It's got some songs on there that are kind of undercooked, but "Georgie Parker" brought the tears on listen #1. I really think he's taken over as my favorite American songwriter. Also, some of the sonic frippery is pretty damned avant. Overall grades to follow, but I'm loving it all the way right now.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 1 July 2005 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

must hear!

deej.., Friday, 1 July 2005 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, you do have to, deej, it's the real thing. Someone said that he's like Al Green lite, but i think he's more like the real thing, esp. in the "weirdness of lyrical approach" department. "I Cry" has the following lines:

"Away from you a winter baby / Girl is just too much for me
I missed choir practice on Saturday / Trying to catch the last midnight movie
See I just buried my mother / And I'll be damned if I lose you
Until time brings you home again baby / This is what I'll do"

bleak! and the "Georgie Parker" song is about a weird frail loner kid on the school bus who just....kinda....disappears........

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm excited...Haiku, is the music similar to that of the first, which was pretty southern fried soulish...you mention "frippery"..is it wierder musically?

Holy shit! This sounds amazing!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

the music is actually more conventional, as most of it dates from five years ago when he was still searching for a style, and soulife didn't have the hugest of budgets...but the new remixing touches (not that I've heard the oldest stuff, and some songs were just 100% re-recorded I guess) and a.h.'s vision make it more than just some occasionally cheesy synths and overdubbed voice choirs.

and yeah: it's amazing, I think.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

'comin' from where I'm from' was sparer, but this has a lot of space to it as well. it's clearly the work of a younger man, but still kinda ancient. there's a weird song about how "If I was your keeper" I wouldn't have let him run off with you.......?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

"Georgie Parker" reminds me of N.E.R.D.'s "Bobby James" (which I do love), only it's about several times more amazing.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 1 July 2005 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

There is some beautiful shit on this album, for real. I still want a NEW Anthony Hamilton record though.

Between this, Missy, and R. Kelly, it's like my r&b birthday.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

five months pass...
Aw shit, apparently the 'real' new Anthony Hamilton album came out yesterday? Anyone heard?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Yes, it is great. Cibula OTM!

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

(Rather, Cibula OTM in this thread. Apparently he doesn't like the new one as much. Its not as good but it is good!)

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 00:39 (nineteen years ago)

I actually
haven't listened to this one
much at all lately

and the new album
is okay enough in spots
but not TRANSCENDENT

except for the great
title song, which for sure was
last year's best* soul song

*only?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

For some reason I thought this thread was about Comin Where I'm From. Which it obv isn't. I haven't heard Soulife.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

Coming From Where I'm From is, in fact, transcendent. At times.
