No he isn't.

Sorry, it's the first thing that popped into my head when I spotted this:

Sorry, I'm a dick.

Nah, I just figured he was killed in the same carcrash that killed Gwen Stefani back in 1996.

Ned, you are very much OTM. I don't think I would even care at all if he were carrying on under his own name or something else, but the fact that he still calls this "Smashing Pumpkins" really grates.

(xpost)

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 4 March 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

honestly, if he was only saying, I think I'm one of the great artists, that'd be fine -- a little hubris is ok! But then he has to make it sound as though he's some embattled figure, struggling against the almighty forces of Pitchfork.

tylerw, Thursday, 4 March 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

$30 for five song and a miniature stone fucking obelisk.

Hahah you have to wonder if he spent more time in his youth with Presence or Spinal Tap.

I don't think I would even care at all if he were carrying on under his own name or something else, but the fact that he still calls this "Smashing Pumpkins" really grates.

I completely agree! Hell, I loved the solo album five years back; had he just started a new band project with Chamberlain I wouldn't've minded.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 March 2010 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

I wonder if he knows about TimeCube.com yet.

Just the other day I talked about the first time I saw the Pumpkins live -- two decades is a long, long time.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 March 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

Someone please photoshop that onto the Presence cover!

(xpost)

I read that Ned, I really liked that entry.

yeah, that's a nice one, ned! quite the time capsule -- the Whiskey in 91! I didn't make it to the Sunset Strip til I was a bit older, but I would've loved to have seen that show. Quite the time capsule!

tylerw, Thursday, 4 March 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

I have no problem with egotistical artists with delusions of grandeur but jesus christ at least be funny or clever about it, whiny self-righteousness is never attractive

Wet Hot American Oil Spill (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 4 March 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

Does Corgan *think* he's being funny, though? Kind of? Maybe not.

tylerw, Thursday, 4 March 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

Like I muttered in my piece, he's got a VERY dry sense of humor -- or had. Think that's gone now, though.

I should say that I did see him not that long ago at the Sky Saxon tribute show at the Echoplex in LA, a comfortable club show in essence -- he played with a couple of ad hoc bands and participated in the big jam at the end, and he wasn't being a crazed ranter or anything of the sort; if anything it was the most relaxed performance I'd seen from him in years. I have a theory that if he's doing something where he's not the headliner or center of attention he enjoys himself a hell of a lot more, but I don't think he's figured that out yet!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 March 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

Well, everyone from Eric Clapton to Kevin Shields has figured that one over the years.

Mark G, Thursday, 4 March 2010 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I think his sense of humor is completely gone at this point. When the "reunion" happened he put together a revamped Pumpkins official site that was all about networking with the fans, it was sort of a combination between Facebook and your typical band site. I thought it was actually well done and really gave a voice to the fans. But once the fans started voicing criticism of him, he threw a fit and took it all down. Now the official website is one badly designed page with a bunch of links and the fan forum has been completely disassociated with it.

Ned, I read some really good reviews of that tribute and like what I've seen via YouTube clips. I think I get most frustrated when I catch glimpses of his brilliance and talent and wonder why he can't tap into that more often.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 4 March 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

I think it takes a very special kind of mind to look in a mirror, see Billy Corgan's face, and not laugh

Bunsen burner, bubbles, IT'S ALIVE! whaaaaa-? (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 March 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

Billy Corgan is a douchebag but his doucheyness is really like an unfortunate symptom of what made him so great back in the '90s. His entire career he's seemed like a guy who's always in his own head (it comes off more often than not to fans and detractors alike as self-absorption) who has been progressively drifting further off this planet into his own weird fantasy world. I love early Pumpkins (obv) & hate everything billy has done post-Adore except for his strangely genius one-off solo album.

T-R-A-P-S-T-R (Curt1s Stephens), Thursday, 4 March 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

he never meant shit to me (sry)

Pumpkins through Adore ranges from good to holy shit awesome IMO

Bunsen burner, bubbles, IT'S ALIVE! whaaaaa-? (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 March 2010 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

I can't believe this prick appeared on a New Order track.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 4 March 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

And he toured in the band, too!

If Corgan weren't so lame, he could have had a great second act as an alt-rock goofball gadfly a la Dave Grohl, who seems to know how to have fun. Corgan, on the other hand ... I once saw him do a poetry reading while lounging on a pillow in the corner of a room in the Art Institute, wearing an army helmet with lightbulbs affixed. No shit. Was it hilarious? Yes. Was it funny on purpose? To this day I have no idea. I happened to be sitting with a friend who briefly played in the (pre-breakup) Pumpkins, and he was just as perplexed. Either that or he didn't want to say anything bad about a potential future paycheck.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 4 March 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

Pumpkins through Adore Machina (secretly their best album) ranges from good to holy shit awesome IMO

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 4 March 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

I definitely think people tend to undervalue Machina, but at the MOST its like their fourth best album. No chance of it ever rating any higher than that. U MAD.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 4 March 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)

mayonnaise is like the best song ever yo

Melvin van Osterlow, Jr. (res), Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

In the 2008 documentary If All Goes Wrong, when talking about "Mayonaise" Corgan attributes to Iha "the chord structures, essentially, but it's really only two parts" and says Iha "gets a lot of credit" for writing a "fantastic" song "because his name is on the credit but I wrote the song."

Melvin van Osterlow, Jr. (res), Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

That whole raft of material that Corgan released in 2000-01 (counting the Internet leaks et al) was a hell of a way to bow out, really. Or should have been.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, machina 2 had some great jamz; wonder if it'll ever get a proper release

hobbes, Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

you know, I like "Turn My Way" a lot as a stand alone song, but whenever I play Get Ready I skip it

Bunsen burner, bubbles, IT'S ALIVE! whaaaaa-? (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

If ever a band didn't need a guest ringer, it's New Order.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 4 March 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

god forbid someone in a successful band you like decides to do a song with someone else successful that they like

Bunsen burner, bubbles, IT'S ALIVE! whaaaaa-? (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 March 2010 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

the important thing is that everyone follow my dictates of taste.

Melvin van Osterlow, Jr. (res), Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

Hey, want to play bass for Billy Corgan? You do? Great news, then! Jessica Simpson’s BFF is holding open auditions to replace Smashing Pumpkins bassist Ginger Pooley, who is leaving, amicably, to spend more time with her family (unless Corgan made her say that?). He’s also looking for a new keyboardist “who is a fan of — and can play in the prog-rock style of — Jon Lord and Rick Wakeman.” (By the way, the band found their drummer, Mike Byrne, through an open audition). Send background info and performance videos to pumpkinsb✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧ or pumpkinsk✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧.

tylerw, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

might have to try out for this, Billy seems like an even-keeled, reasonable employer

tylerw, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

'Machina' is the worst album I've ever owned, and 'Adore' ain't far behind. An almost unfathomable fall from 93-94 to 96-97 to 98-99. Can't imagine how awful the guy must be at this point.

Soundslike, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

Corgan always seemed to me like the James Cameron of 90's alt-rock

Dearest Billy:

I love you, I love your strong and eternal heart, even love the fucked up gnarly amazing magnificent bigger-than-god louder-than-love karma of the songs you write and allow me to fly with. We have again created beauty from the agony between us, all the buried and unburied anguish, all that is true, that is gold, that is meant to be is within this endless and somehow eternal cycle of Billy & Courtney.I hope you will take my sincerest apologies for all the thousand ways I sometimes offend you, because I know you are a king, a prince, and my beautiful noble boy. No one will ever force my hand, nothing will come between the truth of what we are:
Eternal lovers
Eternal fighters
Eternal warriors.
Let the forces and the shock and awe loose from its cages, all credit where it is due. I love and you and can never thank you enough.Your soul (and you know this).
