Yes, I know there's this thread, but it's hekka weak & old and doesn't properly address the COOLNESS of this record!! I'd never heard of King's of Convenience before, but randomly came accross "Every Party" (w/ Prefuse73) on a compilation, which soon became my favorite song of this summer. So now I'm bumping the whole album and *loving* it, and want to know what others think/feel...

This album is great (though I might like the DJ Kicks better). That other KOC guy just drags Erlend down! (I don't really believe that)

It's ok, I haven't heard the entire KoC remix album but I have the suspicion it might be stronger. Erlend has a few songs on Unrest that work but I'm less than enthralled by the lyrics/melody on others.

It's a great album (I definitely prefer the DJ Kicks though). I put "Every Party" on every comp I made for anybody for about 6 months.

I like it too. Came across it only this spring. I think it's great, although plenty of my friends would think that it is my guilty pleasure, it actually isn't.

Most of the hate seems to start with criticism of his DJ-Kicks entry (which was kind of his breakout success): the singing's a novelty, it's eclecticism for its own sake, his technique is poor, it trivializes DJ'ing in a deliberate attempt at crossover appeal, etc. These may or may not be true, but really, if you enjoy it, bully for you. No one should have to justify liking something- if they want to, and they can, then great- skillful writing borne of genuine enthusiasm for the subject matter is the best kind. But feeling guilty about liking something because it's not worthy for whatever reason == the suck.

Note to self: do not attempt to write while drunk. Especially about The Looming Specter Of Rockism.

But yeah, it does seem odd that some traditionally "rockist" type arguments are being used to bash Oye by people who fall firmly on the pop side of the fence.

Of course, some people just think he sucks, which is understandable, I guess. I think he's all right but I will admit he can't sing for crap.
