Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 25 July 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

I think one of the first threads I chined in on a few years ago was what represents your birth and death. So fuck it, here it is again:

Birth: Trio - Da Da Da
Death: Pat Benetar - Hell is for Children

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

"Tomorrow Never Knows" - but i'm undecided as whether it should be the original version or that ccc "You Only Live Twice" mash up.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Monday, 25 July 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

whatever the longest musical piece ever composed in. Maybe that several-hundred-years composition of Cage's (or was it Eno...)?

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 25 July 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I'd also want "Mr. Big Stuff" playing during the eulogies.

Horridmonsta (MichaelCostello1), Monday, 25 July 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

If I'm cremated I'd like this played as my coffin proceeds slowly down the conveyor belt to the incinerator

Not sure about the song but I'd like to listen (well, not really but whatever) to some St. Etienne, maybe Sound of Water.

Michael Burble, Monday, 25 July 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine suggested that the best song to be played as the casket lowered would be that 80s teen-movie theme that goes "Bow bow! Chick-chickahhhhhh! Bow bow! OOOOOHHHH YEAH!!!"

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

My Way or another Sinatra nugget ? Then a really long Fluxus piece or something way too experimental and hypnotic.

blunt (blunt), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

Moon River - Henry Mancini
Over The Rainbow - Judy Garland
Dead - They Might Be Giants
Off He Goes - PJ (my favorite song of theirs)

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

The Song that goes "Bow Bow, Chk, Chicka Chooka", that is known from Ferris Beuller's Day Off, is called "Oh Yeah" by Yello. If you haven't watched the video for it, I suggest you do.

http://www.whispers.speedlinq.nl/foto-yello.jpg

I'd have another answer...

"Massachusettes" by The Bee Gees.

Razzle (MichaelCostello1), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

"Gooseberries and Bilberries" by Ivor Cutler

SoHoLa (SoHoLa), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

Queen - Another One Bites the Dust

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

When I was younger and terribly melodramatic, I would have answered with the Fifth Dimension, "Aquarius / Let the Sun Shine In." Today I'd be more likely to say Curtis Mayfield, "Move On Up."

But my friend Amelia Ray had the best answer for this. She wants to have Jerry Reed's "When You're Hot, You're Hot" played.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 04:21 (twenty years ago)

Towards the end of my service they'll play "Return of the Hip Hop Freaks" by Nice & Smooth, and I'll jump up out of the coffin with a cane and top hat to do a big *show-time* dance number on top of my grave. Then I'll lay me down to sleep.

(I also like how they played "smooth operator" at the funeral of fallen drug kingpin Felix Mitchell Junior).

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

I'd also like "Hard Times" by Kurtis Blow playing to bring the house down.

Razzle (MichaelCostello1), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

"After Hours" by the Velvet Underground

t. fiend (t. fiend), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

Rewrite question to: "What song do you want played at rock's funeral?"

Loveless? (ducks)

When my best friend died in a car accident a few years ago, we sang Christmas carols at her funeral- in August. I thought it was the sweetest idea, her parents picked Joy to the World and another one whose title escapes me right now. My friend loved singing, and when we were living in a coop together in college she used to start singing carols in about October every year.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

"Faster"-MSP
"Theologians"-Wilco

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

Everyone I know says "Atmosphere".

I say "Ecstasy of Gold" by Ennio Morricone. Fuck yeah, Ass-kickingly good!

nicholas de jong (nicholas de jong), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

I have plan sequence of melodic songs to be played on the notion of my demise, this is a follow:

Huey Lewis and the News - Do You Believe In Love
Phil Collins - Another Day In Paradise
Supertramp - Give A Little Bit
Ringo Starr - It Don't Come Easy
Jellyfish - Baby's Coming Back
Cutting Crew - I Just Die In Your Arms Tonight

Comstock Carabineri, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

"Cheyenne's Theme" by Ennio Morricone, from the soundtrack to Once Upon A Time In the West

gear (gear), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)

Huey Lewis and Phil Collins ringing in your ears for all eternity? Choose carefully.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

"Childlike Faith in Childhood's End" by Van der Graaf Generator.

Anti-Pope Consortium (noodle vague), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

"the jeffersons" theme song, "movin on up"

gear (gear), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

Huey Lewis and Phil Collins will not be ringing in my ear for eternity, for they are melodic craft masterpiece chosen carefully. Huey Lewis sings of the joy of being alive, but Phil Collins reminds us that many peoples are not so lucky, they are alive but not living insted exist, so this is thoughts to keep in mind when go to see Saint Peter and ask for entry and you make sure your name is down so you can come in :)

Comstock Carabineri, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

Pet Shop Boys' "Sail away" and/or "Your funny uncle" (although I would feel a little obvious, since the song is about a funeral -- but then again, I'll be dead, so maybe I won't feel anything).

Or maybe Norma Jean Bell's "I'm the baddest bitch (in the room)."

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and also Birdie's "Silver line."

Yes, I think about my funeral a bit.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

"You Make Me Feel" by Sylvester sung by a gospel choir, in a black baptist church in Louisiana with one of those big processions down the street and all. I'd rather people dance than cry, it would be much more fitting.

That or any version of "This Woman's Work" to force even the toughest of men to cry at my funeral.

Wayfaring Stranger - Bill Monroe
Shenandoah - perf. by Tony Rice
The Wind Cries Mary - Hendrix

or

When the Saint go Marching in, along with a full NOLA funeral procession. High steppin' all the way out the door, y'all...

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

When I was a melodramatic youth I would have gone for "Exit Music" by Radiohead which might have been changed more recently to "How to disappear completely". I think i'd be more likely to chose something more uplifting now though - spare my poor relatives even more grief than strictly necessary.

You have to weigh up whether your funeral is an opportunity to wallow in the terrible sadness of your passing or as the first step towards recovery for those you leave behind. It could be their lasting memory of you.

Unfortunately, my record collection is mainly filled with depressing wallowy numbers.

Wobble (Wobble), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I think I posted this here before, but I want Elton John to rewrite the lyrics to one of his millions of crappy hits in my honor. I cannot improve on the suggestion of my friend Don, that it be "Get Back, Honky Cat."

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Cornelius - 'Rock/96', which begins with orgasms (ie conception) and ends in a very sudden backwards guitar line that seems to rip the entire song off the speakers (ie death). Or 'Lazy', which would describe one of my biggest habits and has the final line, "Music: stop".

i'm sure i've said this here somewhere before, but assuming i get the send-off i want - being strapped to an the outside of an enormous rocket and launched into the sky - then it'd be "lower your eyelids to die with the sun" by M83.

failing that ... i dunno. "peacon" by the workhouse? "lonesome tonight" by new order? "i'm coming", the marc almond cover of jacques brel? ach, fuck it, i'll be dead. stet will probably outlive me and sneak on crazy frog instead.

id like the song "believe" by Cher to be played at medium volume throughout the entire ceremony to the heavily drinking crowd (there will be an open bar during the ceremony, hopefully), and the song will only be stopped while my freind plays harvest moon on his accordian.

ive thought about this alot.

I've always thought it would lighten the mood to play "Pomp and Circumstance No. 1" by Edward Elgar at my funeral, though it would probably only be amusing in the U.S., where it connotes graduation rather than hope and glory.

Okeigh, Wednesday, 1 March 2006 01:29 (twenty years ago)

I would like George Harrision's "All Things Must Pass", immeaditely followed by "Art of Dying" which would include a laser show as I was shown through the door.
