Whoa...

http://www.brownbrothersrecordings.com/index2.html

Welcome (back) to Brown Brothers Recordings. We are proud to be releasing Gold Sounds, an album of Pavement songs recorded by James Carter (reeds), Cyrus Chestnut (keyboards), Ali Jackson (percussion) and Reginald Veal (bass). Gold Sounds will be available at a record store near you on September 27, 2005. We think the album, aside from the hipness factor of Pavement and Mssrs. Carter, Chestnut, Jackson and Veal, is as good an album as some of the all-time instrumental greats. Think Coltrane's My Favorite Things or The Allman Brothers Band Live at the Fillmore.

Streaming now is "Stereo", track one on the Pavement album Brighten the Corners and track one on Gold Sounds. Check this space for other streams and remember to go to your local record store on September 27, 2005 and support great music.

fucking brilliant!

Ha, the Brown Brothers seem totally smarmy for some reason. But the track they had a streaming a few months ago was hot, and this one is alright too (note: I do not know the originals).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

well, that is a problem.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

The smarminess or the fact that I don't listen to Pavement?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

the latter.

there was another thread about this. i've been wanting to hear the record but i haven't found it anywhere except for a stray mp3 or two -- i'll probably just buy it if i see it.

they've been advertising this since, what, February? bout damn time!

Yeah, I was uncertain about this project's future, since I was at the site a week or two ago and it was still saying "Spring/Summer 2005."

Wow, I remember thinking "Summer Babe" was a little too mannered and oblique somehow, but I'm really liking this "Stereo" cover, lots.

If anyone struggled to find the other thread on this:

James Carter and Cyrus Chestnut cover Pavement

It includes the supposed tracklist:

1) Stereo
2) My First Mine
3) Cut Your Hair
4) Summer Babe
5) Blue Hawaiian
6) Here
7) Platform Blues
8) Trigger Cut

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

I bet "Blue Hawaiian" is awesome, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, I remember reading about this a long time ago. The streaming track is pretty good!

While it may not be the complete experience, I'm certain I would enjoy this as a jazz album without knowing the originals. It may even inspire me to listen to Pavement.
