superwolf

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

I've been discussing this with friends this weekend. Bad year for music. My nominees, at the risk of general ridicule:

Top three so far:
LCD Soundsystem - S/T
MIA - Arular
Fannypack - See You Next Tuesday

Runner-ups:
Scout Niblett - Kidnapped By Neptune
Electrelane - Axes

Also looking forward to the new Devendra Banhart record, but that's a lousy list for a year that's eight months old so far.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

the roisin murphy record is my fave

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

The Shortwave Set - The Debt Collection
Cagedbaby - Will See You Now
Gustav -Rettet Die Wale

are still the most emotive, skilfully produced, beautifully sung and gosh-darn best 3 albums out this year.

BARMS, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

Isolée-Wearemonster, far and away the best.

others...
Vitalic-OK Cowboy
M.A.N.D.Y.-Body Language
Superpitcher-Today

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

The cover of the Caged Baby album put me off it somewhat. Should it?

Gustav I know nothing about. Educate me!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

Marc, I have no idea what you'd make of the Cagedbaby album. I suppose describing it as an intersection for 80s synthpop, INXS, PSB and Prince to jam with the ambient swirls of the early 90s (Aphex, The Beloved, Orbital) and the Germanic dance of now is most apt. You should listen at least once and I think the opener, 'Hello There', should get you in that romantic heart of yours.

Gustav is like a darker, cabaret laptop-based Viennese Bjork. And it too is a wonderful record.

BARMS, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

MC, keep your eyes on the YSI thread over the next day or so.

a, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

hey sleeve how's the fanypack stuff? i mean what is it like?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

I ain't sleeve, but the Fannypack album is a less manic, more dancehall-inflected continuation of the first. The pop songwriting seems to be stronger this time round too. It's top 10 for me.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

I ain't sleeve, but the Fannypack album is a less manic, more dancehall-inflected continuation of the first.

Jonathan Merritt, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

B, the Gustav mp3 won't play on my computer :(

What about the website mp3s?

As for others under the radar, the Supersystem album - Always, Never Again, is a pretty good approximation of the Rapture's best dance moments.
Superthriller (album is Superthriller1) are a British version of The Time.
The Boy Least Likely To - The Best Party Ever is the cutest album about mortality and broken hearts made by rural miserabalists ever made.
Marxy's Kyoshu Nostalgia is a nice lookback at everything that made 90s Tokyo's teenage symphonies to musical diversity and pop music great.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

dEUS - Pocket Revolution. It's not out yet and I only heard the rough mix. But ah fuck it best release of 2005 for me so far. Quelle surprise.

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm loving the new Jaga Jazzist album, "What We Must"

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

St Etienne's Tales From Turnpike House

mentalist (mentalist), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

I tried to buy the Isolee CD recently but it was sold out, and the guy at Other Music told me that the distributor is sold out too, so it could be a while before I hear that one, but based on the song I downloaded, I think I might like it. The rest of my list hasn't changed very much since the last time we had one of these threads:

Missy Elliott - "The Cookbook"
M.I.A. - "Arular"
Stephen Malkmus - "Face the Truth"
Fiery Furnaces - "EP"
Ellen Allien - "Thrills"
Jennifer Gentle - "Valende"
Fast N Bulbous - "Pork Chop Blue Around the Rind"
A-Frames - "Black Forest"
Fantomas - "Suspended Animation"
Jason Forrest - "Lady Fantasy EP"

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Guero

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

my top 12 so far (just alphabetized):

Bah Samba - Bah Samba 4
Broadcast - Tender Buttons
Colder - Heat
Herbaliser - Take London
Jamie Liddell - Multiply
Lemon Jelly - 64-95
Neon Heights - A Hot Trip To Heaven
Out Hud - Let Us Never Speak Of It Again
Patrick Wolf - Wind In The Wires
Roots Manuva - Awfully Deep
Telepopmusik - Angel Milk
Venetian Snares - Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett

the new Jay-Jay Johanson (Rush) is sounding pretty good, but I haven't given it enough of a listen to include it in my best-of-year list yet. i didn't really like the Saint Etienne album (big disappointment for me, actually)

i want to put Maximo Park because I've *really* enjoyed a lot of the album but "Limassol", "Once, A Glimpse", "Now I'm All Over the Shop", and "Acrobat" are all pretty weak tracks and it weighs the whole album down. kinda the same thing with the Magic Numbers record too

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Fuck albums! I've listened to 'Tender Buttons' more than any other this year though (not saying a huge amount). 'Arular' and 'OK Cowboy' are still holding steady. Still not obtained FannyPack.

Vornado, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

would anyone care to xplain the love for arch in helinski or maximo park?....both records leave me cold, but seem to be finding hot reception elsewhere.

colleen may stay in heavy rotation till next year, also the fursaxa record, akron/family, errr...braindead today

b b, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

i can't really explain the maximo park record love, but a handful of singles/album tracks ("graffiti", "kiss you better", "the coast is always changing", "apply some pressure") just really hit me. well crafted pop, reminiscent of the 80s power pop with just enough of a hint of punky/post-punky angularity to keep it interesting. i mean yeah it's all been done to death, but they write good, fun, hooky-as-hell songs.

it's just been a great driving in the car summer soundtrack for me. but (as stated upthread) the album has just a few too many filler tracks to reside on my year's best of.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

"would anyone care to xplain the love for arch in helinski or maximo park?....both records leave me cold"

I actually find the AiH album to be very warm. I think it's compositionally excellent and that they were pushing the bar a little there - about as much as, say, Fiery Furnaces on Blueberry Boat, but in making a tighter record. Check the lyrics on their web site and maybe listen again if you're interested?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

monica queen 'return of the sacred heart' and tompaulin 'into the black' are what i listen to most, same genre really, country-ish indie though the monica queen record is almost like a collection of hymns. i like lots more, been an excellent year.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 11 August 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

i keep forgetting to check out the new cribs. i seemed to be very alone in my love for their debut.

faves of this year so far are cranebuilders, maximo park, low, tom vek. i haven't heard the art brut or broadcast albums yet. i'd love to hear albums by televise, new rhodes and apartment as their singles so far have blown me away.

i think the tompaulin record is great but i think i overdosed on it a little.

jimmy glass (electricsound), Thursday, 11 August 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

i think AiH are one of the most contrived bands to walk the face of the earth, but i will grudgingly accept i like two songs on their album quite a bit. many of the others are like aural cheesegraters.

jimmy glass (electricsound), Thursday, 11 August 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe only one person said Spoon! Come on guys! SPOON!

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Thursday, 11 August 2005 05:03 (twenty years ago)

Agreed that it's a far better year for singles than albums. At this point I still could not compile a legit P&J albums ballot, but my top four are:

Bocephus King, All Children Believe in Heaven
Aimee Mann, The Forgotten Arm
Jason Mraz, Mr. A-Z (the lead single is the weakest track)
The Churchills, The Odds of Winning

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 11 August 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

I think both the Stars and Feist albums are from last year, jaymc. maybe that was just in Canada, though

Yup, just in Canada. In the U.S., Stars came out on March 8 and Feist on April 26, both this year. Which means I'm counting them for 2005.

I'm not, however, counting Annie (May 2005 release in the U.S.) because I first heard the album in 2004.

I am counting Mannie Fresh because it came out on like Dec. 21 of last year or something ridiculous. However, it probably won't make my top 10, so that's moot.

Mew has a new album? Not Frengers?

Mew And The Glass Handed Kites. Out 26 September. A 54-minute, 14-track (but segued together as one continuous track) prog-pop epic. Imagine A-Ha doing Yoshima. With a cameo from J Mascis. And probably the most drop-dead gorgeous song of 2005 in "White Lips Kissed." And it ends with a drum solo. Followed by the singer alone, weeping "Stay with me, I don't want to be alone." It is beyond awesome.
