Noxagt: The Iron Point
Various/Alan Lomax: Caribbean Voyage: The French Antilles

Should I recognize part of the first Noxagt song because it sounds like they've lifted something from a song I've heard before, but I have no idea what that song would be.

milton, I like it. I'm not mad about the very high-pitched style of singing on a lot of the songs (which I guess is simply the style), but I still like it overall. The parts work together pretty well, including the Chinese classical musician, who fits right in. So far I think the first song is my favorite. (I'd like to see the movie about crazy hippies that it's from.)

What is "Welsh rare beat"?

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 07:26 (nineteen years ago)

andy votel/gruff rhys/some other guy compiled a bunch of tunes from the welsh sain label in the 70s. folky-funky-rocky stuff all in welsh.

dEUS - Pocket Revolution.

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

(and some dEUS *b-tracks* on Itunes)

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:52 (nineteen years ago)

There was a piece on dEUS in yesterday's Metro newspaper. The article said that they had achieved some degree of success abroad, unlike other Belgian bands such as Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung. Should I be cognisant of the works of the latter or is the name a trillion times better than the music?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

bought last week: malcolm middleton, goldfrapp, elbow. were it not for M83, the first would be a contender for my album of the year. the second has proved itself to be absolutely fantastic. the third ... the jury's still out.

got from work last week: the new grandaddy mini-EP. meh. need to listen again.

before that, i honestly can't remember. i'd need to go home and look. this is pathetic, i know. it's been musical overload of late. which is always a good thing: however, i fear that if i can't even remember what i've been listening to, i can hardly have paid it the required attention.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

I'm now able to buy CDs again after a summer of no money. I got Television - Marquee Moon and Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left in HMV sale on Friday and today I'm gonna get the new Sigur Ros and possibly the Brakes album.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah GF, I'd be inclined to agree with you about Into The Woods - it's a very strong record. Have you heard the new Arab Strap album yet?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:28 (nineteen years ago)

DAAU isn't my cup of tea at all. They try to mix rock 'n' classical music. If you like I can make you a (double) mix CD of Belgian rock. :-) I'd be happy to send you some over! Dead Man Ray's CD could be found in Rough Trade, but I don't think they ever performed abroad. DAAU? They did a few gigs, but they were too hard to market, I think. dEUS did achieve some success, I guess, but mostly with critics and other bands. I think Radiohead once said they had In A Bar Under The Sea on repeat on their stereo. And Garbage's Manson also loved dEUS.

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

no. you'd think the fact my mate plays bass for them would entitle me to an avalanche of advance CDs, but ... pah. not one :)

i listened to "hug and pint" the other day while driving to perth and back, straight after "into the woods". first time i've put it on in at least a year, and i still don't like it very much. but going by the fact i loved their second and fourth albums, and wasn't so taken with their third and fifth, i have high hopes for this one :)

The Ex - Singles Period: The Vinyl Years 1980-1990

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

hurrah, i've just this second acquired a two-CD beta-band best-of (from work). it's one disc of studio recordings (16 tracks), one live at shepherd's bush empire (13 tracks). given that the only BB stuff i own is the "three EPs" album, this has to be a good thing.

Charity shop. Seven Sisters Road. Vinyl. 95 pence each:

Arthur Lyman, Taboo
60's pressing. On Vocalion, totally mint condition. Might be worth something?

Chas & Dave, Greatest Hits
... whereas this is virtually worthless (except to me). Gatefold sleeve! With lyrics! (So you.. sorry... I can sing along) Photos of the lads at the funfair at Margate or Canvey Island or summat. But, and it's a big but, from 1984, so no "Snooker Loopy" :-(

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Friday, 11 November 2005 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

Which charity shop, Scope? I was there the other day! Think I saw the Chas & Dave but left it as I have a Best Of cd already.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Friday, 11 November 2005 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, Scope! I never usually go into charity shops on 7Sisters because they look so scuzzy and down-at-heel but I had time to kill...

Kate Bush - Never For Ever
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love

I've never had a proper copy of the latter, and my cassette only copy of the other died a long time ago.

Does anyone ever talk about how brilliantly "All We Ever Look For" cuts to the essence of life? Anyway, I really like Never For Ever. I might even like it more than The Dreaming and Hounds of Love. There's less about it to bother me, but the songs aren't as elaborate. I guess.

Never For Ever is absolutely tremendous, you'll get no argument about that from me (maybe best continued in the 'Aerial' thread though).

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

I guess this should just be rounded up through the end of December.

I bought four CDs but one is a dualdisc which will not play in my CD player, though there was nothing on the site I ordered it from warning that it might not play. I really would just like a CD I can listen to If these idiot DVDs interfere with that, then by all means, give me one without the extras.

Steve Reich: You Are (Variations)
Fiona Apple: Extraordinary Machine DUALDISC
Gilberto Santa Rosa/El Gran Combo: Asi Es Nuestra Navidad [case, badly cracked]
Gilberto Santa Rosa/Victor Manuelle: Dos Soneros, Una Historia (En Vivo) [I get the bad feeling that despite this having actually been recorded live, some of these audience sounds maybe be fake. Do they never give up on this act of exquisitely bad taste?]
