Kat Mandu - "The break" (kebekelektrik mix)

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 12 September 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

what about songs that are only breakdowns, and don't have intros, outros, verses, choruses, or other types of bridges?

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Monday, 12 September 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

Cymande's "Bra" has most famously been sampled for "Change in Speak" on De La Soul's "Three Feet" album.

Cymande

Go-Go music to thread..

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 12 September 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

Pretty embarrassing to have to ask, but, [inhales deeply] exactly what IS a breakdown? I've never been entirely sure. A song reduced to just the rhythm section for a certain interval? Or one of those patented James Brown-style stop-on-a-dime, sing the title, then right-back-to-the-song things? (eg. "Sexy MF", "Unbelievable", etc.) And is it a "legitimate" musical term (like "bridge" or "coda") or just a fairly meaningless generic term like "grunge"? I'm looking at all the songs above, trying to find a common thread between 'em, and I'm not seeing it. And I simply MUST know! Please answer me, anybody, and I'll be your friend.

Myonga Von Boggle (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 12 September 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard anybody define it, but it's commonly used in dance music circles to mean the bit in the middle of a tune when the drums stop and everybody is supposed to get all hyped up waiting for them to kick back in a again. Breakdowns often feature empassioned wailing, a new melody starting up and drum rolls...

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 12 September 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

Or the awesome bit in "One More Time" where it's just the vocoder and it drags out and out and out until...

I Oppose All Rock and Roll (noodle vague), Monday, 12 September 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone said "Am I Black Enough For You?" by Billy Paul?

Great breakdown to electric piano and bongo with little guitar and then
the bass and horns kick back in...and wahooo!

Also the funky-ist opening of any song outside of Superstition...but that's another thread...

ned trifle, Monday, 12 September 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh, it was ALL about the drum break. We all went MAD for that drum break. In our local club, they would double its length by mixing two copoes together.
