DJs you love to hate

I bring this up because of one of my pet hates, Mary-Anne Hobbs... The show's format is great with an excellent selection of music, but Miss Hobbs manages to spoil it all by gushing all over the records saying things like "I've got written down that this record is a repetitive beat... but it's a wonderful one at that" or "Now stop what you're doing and sit down because i can guarantee you this is the best thing you've ever heard"

Obviously there are many more dj's i could rant about (Jamie Theakston, Chris Moyles) but they're far too obvious.

So who do you love to hate?

Charlie Frame, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DJ Kracker, the dick from Kid Rock who has his own album with hit single out.

, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dj shadow. im not from the UK so im sure people will name all these dj's i've never heard of..and the shit thay call "trance"..whats up with ecstacy? usa usa.

Kevin Enas, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ecstasy is good for you, even Dr.Dre necks it which means white Americans will start doing it in masses. You should start today, you will be ahead of the crowd, dig? ;)

Now Charlie was probably talking about radio-DJ's, which immediatly makes this a UK-only thread :(

Omar, Thursday, 22 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Peter Gordon who does the breakfast show on 96.4 The Eagle FM, serving Guildford, Godalming and mid-Surrey.Like all breakfast show DJs he is a professional tool. Unlike all breakfast show DJs he gets to work with Jenny McConnell, who has the sexiest, uh, flow on radio. DAMN HIM.

lamacq. no contest - the annoying breathless faux sincerity with which he heaps praise on any fraggle nonsense within earshot. going deaf for a living? blind nmore like:wanker

Lammo is a twat.

The EU runs a scheme for farmers for surplus food production.

Lammo runs a scheme(airplay) for surplus - not necessary dull bands, an over production outlet for surplus generic crap . Lammo's airplay gaurantees an income to these bands by taking money out of the pockets of 14-18 year old, because Lammo ignores more creative music - these youngsters are duped into buying inferior goods, systems theory - Garbage in - Garbage Out, what you put into a system will determine what comes out of a system.

The generic guitar twaddle he supports ! he is tone deaf, I remember Lammo in his MM column mentioning the Carter/ Neds - were great bands - when you set your sights this low - no wonder he has not got a clue.

Some of the music Lammo supports, just plods along in its generic dull nature. I tune in now and again - and it is always crap ! I caught that last twenty minutes on Monday night ! ghastly!

Yes without doubt Lammo is a dud.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 22 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll quote Ned's ridiculously OTT comment: The world would be a much improved place had Richey Manic carved 4 REAL into Lamacq's face instead of his own arm.

Ally, Thursday, 22 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The man loved fraggle -- to him Mega City Four was a Great Band. That alone should condemn him to carving. And that's not even going into his love for Carter USM... Never actually listened to one of his shows (the above rant was inspired by his NME writing), but I can imagine it's pretty dire.

Nicole, Thursday, 22 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

indeed yes, lamacq is a terrible dj... at least hobbs plays some decent music.

I think the majority of radio 1 djs are loathsome... peel is the only bearable one in a kind of kindly absent-minded uncle way.

charlie frame, Thursday, 22 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm glad to see that I've contributed to the literature of hate around Monsieur Lamacq with my own vivid image.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can I just add my vote to the Lamacq-attack?

Ally C, Thursday, 22 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cheers for the accurate comparisons of like with like, Martian.

Erm, most radio DJs sound like twats to me, basically. I didn't like most of the music Andy Kershaw played, and fucking hell he sounded reactionary fogeyish on his last R1 show (though never before that, and he controlled himself when you consider the shit he took from that master of Birtspeak known as Parfitt), but at least he was a likeable person who you felt you could have a conversation with and actually be talking on the same level. Westwood's a great example of creating an entirely fictional persona for oneself, and on that level he's very important and successful.

But if I had to single out one particular DJ for contempt, it would obviously be Chris Moyles.

three weeks pass...
steeeeve lamacq wins this one by a country mile (or something) Thee few times he sets foot outside ov (fanfare) london he seems unable to spot any "local talent" that doesn't sound like husker du. They give this fux0r like, how many nights a week? His show is unlistenable, and for one who would claim enthusiasm for music, he does a good job ov sounding bored out ov his fuxing skull 90% ov thee time. Hey! is it just me, or was mark radcliffe's evening show pretty good & genuinely eclectic? What happened there?

Norman:

"Hey! is it just me, or was mark radcliffe's evening show pretty good & genuinely eclectic?"

Yes. And how.

"What happened there?"

He went daytime, turned himself into a professional northerner and started playing up his "character" for the daytime audience, and Radio 1 dumbed itself down for its new best friends, its beloved ultra-hedonistic 15-24-year-olds. The old Radcliffe show would be far too clever for them now, I'm afraid.

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 14 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd also like to say that, while Mary Ann Hobbes is immensely irritating as a radio persona, she plays a lot of crap music too. The concept of her show is great, picking up all the electronic stuff that doesn't fit into Dreem Teem/Pete Tong/Judge Jules/Dave Pierce playlists, but she seems to play the most mediocre pieces of music from every genre she picks up on (Freq Nasty? Lo Fidelity Allstars? Regular Fries?!? Ugh...). And the way after EVERY SINGLE guest DJ slot on her programme she says "Oh, wasn't that just magical?" is just soooooo embarassing...

As for Radio 1 DJs music-and-talkwise, Trevor Nelson is probably my favourite: entertaining, thoughtful, nice voice, flow, plus great upfront R&B & hip hop. Dreem Teem and Westwood are great, too.

Tonci Kozul, Tuesday, 17 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's a DJ called Jason Bentley on KCRW in Santa Monica (Los Angeles area), and he's dreadful. I guess he plays pretty standard electronic music, but then he has this awful accent that I think he made up for himself (if it's real I take this back), and he uses really weird intonation patterns - worse than flight attendants.

On the other hand, Garth Trinidad on Chocolate City sounds really nice, though I don't know enough and haven't listened enough to say anything about the music. Eric J. Lawrence's show Dragnet is good for the music, though he seems overly fond of novelty tunes - some of which are really funny - like this song about McDonald's.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate myself. I start a radio show this Sunday on the Triple A station in Boise, Idaho, with absolutely no on-air experience. We did a taping last week. I sounded like a total nerd. But I have a co-host with experience. And they're letting me play cool records (my role on the show), so I'm actually looking forward to the experience.

I cannot stand any of the DJs on WXRT (okay, Wendy Rice and Ken Sumka are tolerable), but BOBBY FUCKING SKAFISH is the worst. So cheeseball, such bad taste in music, so bad with his puns, UGH!

There are no good DJs at all. The only good DJ was Wolfman Jack, and he's dead.

Now if we're talking about, like, non-radio DJs then that's a completely different story.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

which reminds me of Funkmaster Flex. "aww yeah it's goin' down, baby. be clear". like nails on a chalkboard.

what about DJ A.M.? Has anyone actually heard him spin? He is in US Magazine every week. Even after his breakup with Nicole Ritchie. He played one of the Oscar after-parties.

People surely can't bitch about Lamacq, Hobbs and the like when Fern Cotton has airtime on weekend Radio 1, can they? Nevermind Sara Cox...

Mark Ronson?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 20 March 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

Tiesto and Bad Boy Bill were frequent targets among raving friends. Deservedly so.

Paul Van Dyk and Oakenfold who's rumored $10k sets were annointed with trainwreck after trainwreck. Was it the coke or the champagne?

Grooverider on the nights when he was phoning it in but those other nights, the man could really do the job. Goldie, same story but his batting average was way way worse.

DJ Peretz, has he spun anywhere besides Coachella? Speaking of which Madonna in the DJ Tent... whew.

John Aielli. Pretentious, insipid twat. Likes to hear himself talk, and gets way too much airtime (9am to 1pm on KUT--25 hours a week!). I look forward to August every year when he's on vacation. He's the one given high profile interviews of touring artists, and he does no preparation whatsoever. It's painful to hear him say the band's/performer's name wrong every time, even after being corrected. Of course, since he's a local and been on forever, he's revered like some kind of radio god.

patita (patita), Monday, 20 March 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

Aielli's show used to take up 25 hours a week, now it's just 20. Wanker makes me so mad I forget math!

I love to love DJ AM. I've never heard him, but it's fun to drop his name for a laugh.

"Are you going to that party in the Tenderloin tomorrow?"
"I don't know, will DJ AM be spinning?"

It just turns any conversation into a series of dollar signs.
What about those MISSHAPES?

Saint Patrik (cobaininacoma), Thursday, 6 July 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

DJ Conner and DJ Tanner are the best DJ aliases I've ever heard.
