packaging replicates a mod-style hat box and includes a diary-style booklet

I will be buying this.

"Is It True" is one of the most awesome things ever. Jimmy Page on guitar.

Love's Gone Bad - Chris Clark: One of the great Motown Rock Songs (It could be the Standells w/a girl singer)

I want, want, want this

WOW

reo, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Most of what's on there I've never heard of. Along with the handful of things that are fairly well known, I'll vouch for the excellence of these five:

"Nobody Knows What's Goin' On (In My Mind But Me)," Chiffons: minor hit, very strange and hypnotic.
"Nothing But A Heartache," Flirtations: this was pretty big in '69.
"I'm Into Something Good," Earl-Jean: she was a Cookie; much better than Herman's Hermits' (good) cover.
"Big-Town Boy," Shirley Matthews: The best Canadian girl-group hit ever--might be the only one, for all I know, but great anyway.
"Up Down Sue," Luv'd Ones: kind of a garagey variation on the Shangri-Las.

Phil Dellio (j.j. hunsecker), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

it has nita rossi's "untrue unfaithful (that was you)," twiggy's "when i think of you" and the shangri-las' "train from kansas city," which automatically makes it classic, and automatically makes me assume that the many songs i've never heard are also pretty great. but "when i think of you" -- the unacknowledged role model for all modern flat, detached and emotionless singing -- was supposed to be my little secret song, and now they've gone and ruined it, so therefore dud. also, they committed a horrible oversight in overlooking jackie lee's "the town i live in." therefore, double dud.

i will be buying this pronto.

Oh dear lord. I generally disapprove of box sets, but I might have to get this.

one month passes...
I just got this in the mail last night. It is gawgeous. Haven't had a chance to listen through it, but the hat box is very cool, and the accompanying booklet is about 150 pages long. Mostly a song-by-song commentary for each track.

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to have to furiously drop hints about this for Xmas.

There are sound samples here: http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/6946647/a/Girl+Group+Sounds:+Lost+&+Found.htm

The Toni Basil (yes, she of 'Hey Mickey' fame) song sounds amazing. I posted the incredible 'Breakaway' (its b-side) on my blog but am yet to hear all of 'I'm 28'.

It's funny, I just found this thread by googling for Brenda Lee's
'Is It True?', not realising it was on the same compilation I'd mentioned on my blog. There's a great Dutch cover of this by Mariska Veres, lead singer of Shocking Blue on this compilation:

http://funkadelphiarecords.com/newdistorions/nl.html

Christine, Saturday, 29 October 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

^^ Biet Het Volume 3, that is.

Christine, Saturday, 29 October 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I got it! I got it! It's fantastic, of course, even though I've realized now that I have about a third of the songs on various compilations anyway. But it's so worth the 60 bucks. Favorite new discoveries so far (of couse, the more novelty-ish ones get me first, I tend to fall for the moody/dramatic ones later):

"He Makes Me So Mad" by the Hollywood Jills. Hollywood Jill #2's reponses are so funny.

http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=05H7TTFF1GDP12SGTY61UQ85BS

"Peanut Duck" by Marsha Gee. Really great quacking ad lib at the end!

http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=356OEXO3CMCOH3L18P5MNZHNVT

Also, the "I'd Much Rather Be with the Boys" is not as perverse/rfunny as the Stones version, but it works so well as a irony-free girl group number. And I sometimes think "Egyptian Shumba" sums up everything I hold dear about pop music. Surely Kate and Cindy from the B-52s must have heard it at some point?

I hope it's a big success, I'd really love to see a Volume 2.

Gogi Ormsby-Gore (Arthur), Saturday, 29 October 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
I got this from Santa and it hasn't left my stereo since.

Maybe it's too soon to say it's as good as the Nugget's box sets but right now it certainly sounds that way.

Jeff K (jeff k), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

it's an extremely satisfying listen

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

want want want

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, maybe the best comp box set I've heard. I'd also like to take note of the jaw-dropping "Egyptian Shumba", the Dolly Parton tune, the two Velvelettes tracks, and the photo of Jackie DeShannon holding the guitar.

Well worth the money.

sleeve (sleeve), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

So. Freaking. Good.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Jackie DeShannon is a revelation. How's her solo albums?

The spirit of the Shangri-Las definitely hangs over this box set. Such a high body count throughout all the songs!

Jeff K (jeff k), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if it's as good as Nuggets but this is really really good. (I got it for Xmas too of course.) Didn't think I would be able to listen to something like this straight through but I'm almost to the end of the third disc and will probably listen to the fourth tonight. There's so much variety to it ...

Renard, Wednesday, 28 December 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone taken notice how blatantly Neil Young steals from Carole King's "He's a Bad Boy" for his "Pochahontas"? It's almost identical!

Jeff K (jeff k), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

If anyone would email an mp3 or whatever of "I'd Much Rather Be With the Boys" by Donna Lynn to naamme@gmail dot com, I would be forever indebted to you and would send you a mix cd or something if you want.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

The spirit of the Shangri-Las definitely hangs over this box set.

They were my gateway drug for this kind of stuff. The thing was, other than the obvious Specter choices, early Ike and Tina, and a couple other things, I never had any idea where to look or anyone who could show me where to start. This thing rectifies that in a most major way.

And yeah, I should have mentioned DeShannon's "Dream Boy". What a rhythm groove!

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

One of the few complaints I've heard about this set is the lack of Spector-produced songs (prohibited by licensing restrictions). But I can't say I miss them. The box set does fine without Spector.

Do we really need yet another version of Be My Baby?

Jeff K (jeff k), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

i think it's probably a real benefit that there's no spector stuff, because it means some far less heard stuff gets a guernsey and it's not like spector productions aren't compiled out the wazoo

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

gotto get this
"Nothing But A Heartache," Flirtations: this was pretty big in '69.
I love Dr. C's thread on this song

-- Elvis Telecom (quartzcit...), September 14th, 2005. (tracklink)
is this the bonnie tyler song ?

retrogurl, Wednesday, 28 December 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

n/a...

Donna Lynn sent - enjoy!

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

Nobody complained when Nuggets didn't include the Stones and Yardbirds so having a girl groups comp without Spector shouldn't be an issue.

Wasn't Ellie Greenwich's You Don't Know fabulous?

Jeff K (jeff k), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

The Bonnie Tyler song is "It's a Heartache." Originally recorded by Ronnie Spector, though. Nicely covered by David Johansen.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone taken notice how blatantly Neil Young steals from Carole King's "He's a Bad Boy" for his "Pochahontas"? It's almost identical!

yes! the first two lines of the verses are note-for-note identical. but i think i actually like his song better. though hers is pretty great too.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

as for the rest of the box, it's loaded with awesome moments (the one i've replayed about 100 times since i bought is cilla black's "i've been wrong before," written by randy newman, and the one i'm trying to get my band to cover is toni basil's "i'm 28"), but i think it's a lesser set than the dream babes series, which covers the exact same ground with a better, more consistent ear. the rhino set sounds to me like someone took the first 90 or so singles he could grab out of his girl-group pile and threw 'em onto a mixtape. dream babes, to use an artsy-fartsy word, sounds curated. i think i've said pretty much the same thing on another thread recently, but oh well.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

What's the overlap between the Dreambabes series and this set (am I right in thinking DB is much more UK-biased?)

carson dial (carson dial), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Yes, there's an identical thread about this boxed set somewhere around here.

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

This one:

Back To Mono vs. Rhino's One Kiss Can Lead to Another box

(Also this one):

New Rhino girl group box set

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)
yeah, dream babes is completely brit-centric. the overlap is fairly small as a result. and whereas the rhino basically sticks to one song per artist, dream babes tends to focus on fewer artists and go a bit deeper on them. which no doubt has a lot to do with why it sounds more consistent to my ears.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Is the Sandie Shaw box crap?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

OH MY GOD nita rossi's "Untrue Unfaithful." YSI, anyone?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 8 January 2006 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Sunday, 8 January 2006 21:12 (twenty years ago)

That's a really great tune, fire & brimstone.

Today's winner for me is "Happy, That's Me" which, needless to say, is like its polar opposite.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 8 January 2006 21:58 (twenty years ago)

HA! As I clicked on this thread my itunes started playing "Untrue Unfaithful." yeah, great song!

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

the hat box thing is absolutely gorgeous!

joan vich (joan vich), Monday, 9 January 2006 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Reparata was a 3rd century Catholic saint. If I remember what it says in the booklet to OKLTO correctly, Mary Aiese named herself Reperata after a nun at her high school who was named after... you get the idea.

The Dream Babes collections are good, and I also like the Where the Girls Are series on Ace, though there's quite a bit of overlap with the One Kiss box. And, yep, just to echo everyone else, One Kiss Leads to Another is worth every cent you pay for it. 'Cept I got mine as a Christmas gift, so I didn't spend a cent, ha!

James, Friday, 13 January 2006 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Michelangelo, edd can't turn his wallet into a hat.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Sunday, 22 January 2006 17:14 (twenty years ago)

But I just did. I'm enjoying a "Tonight's The Night" knockoff right now.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Sunday, 22 January 2006 17:14 (twenty years ago)

In the middle of second go-round with this- so far so good. All fears of feeling wornout by daunting marathon boxset listenings in an effort to get into it were unfounded- it's enjoyable from start to finish right away. Based on the reports of anthology overlap, I guess I'm kinda glad I haven't bought any girl group comps since Wonder Women.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 01:44 (twenty years ago)

What? No Bananarama? No Spice Girls? :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 02:51 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, Geir, I don't think the Bananarama fan will have to dig very far into the hatbox to find a familiar song or two.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 03:21 (twenty years ago)

went looking for this all over soho. couldnt find it. anyone know if its on sale in the UK?

or are there any good US mailorder places that are quick and dont sting you for import tax. ( or at least makle it unlikely)

need to have it but seeing as HMV are charging £75 for nuggets II, i'm not paying import prices as they would be £80+ cause of the hat box doohicky

danny boy, Sunday, 29 January 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

that's pretty sweet.

ATTN: SAN DIEGO TYPES
As of 2 pm on 4/12/06, the Sam Goody's in UTC in La Jolla had 2 copies left of the One Kiss..... box set. Most importantly, because SG is going out of business (I swear there was a thread about SG going out of business, but I couldn't find it), they are on sale for $20.99!!! Unbelievable deal. Just wanted to pass the word along.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 3 February 2007 06:12 (nineteen years ago)

I often find these boxes so overwhelming. it has nothing to do with quality of the music itself

Ha ha, Christgau gave me his four advance CDs (no hat box or anything) over a year ago, and I still haven't gotten to the bottom of volumes One or Four. I agree with Edd -- box sets like this are daunting, no matter how great the music is. And the music here is great, obviously. But I still love Rhino's two old Wonder Women: History Of The Girl Group Sound LP comps (and my Shangri-Las and Shirelles best-ofs, among other such reliable things) more.

xhuxk (xhuck), Saturday, 3 February 2007 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

Peanut Duck rules.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Saturday, 3 February 2007 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Holy COW is this great. Does anyone think that Marsha Gee got completely drunk (or otherwise intoxicated) before singing "Peanut Duck?" Sure sounds it.

-- mike a (mik...), January 9th, 2006.

According to the liner notes, no one knows who sang this song. It was just attributed to Marsha Gee by the guy who put it out, but it's not Marsha Gee.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Saturday, 3 February 2007 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

27. Mister Loveman - Yvonne Carroll
28. Make The Night A Little Younger - The Palisades
29. Mixed Up, Shook Up, Girl - Patty & The Emblems

Them's my picks. And Peanut Duck too obv.

comments above about dream babes series very much otm

electricsound, Thursday, 8 May 2008 02:57 (seventeen years ago)

Has there been any talk of a sequel oh please oh please oh please?

Some reviewers at the time suggested that Rhino do a ye-ye box as part II, but seeing as this is a cruel cruel world we live in, I don't think it will happen. But I could be content with a "more of the same" sequel (in a shoebox perhaps?)

I put all my CDs up for sale on Amazon. I must have mailed 50 CDs in the last week. This just sold. It's the only one I'm thinking twice about sending. It's not too late to say I listed it in error. The music is obviously great, but that's all in my iTunes. But it's the presentation. As an object, it's the best box set ever.

If you sell it there will always be a hatbox shaped hole in your collection.

six years pass...

i have been contemplating buying this - used copies are going for anywhere from $50 - $75 on eBay these days - but i really have no space for a hatbox

Aw, it's worth it! Take out the CDs, put with your other CDs, hang the hatbox from your ceiling.

bentelec, Monday, 7 September 2015 21:08 (ten years ago)

this is quite good, yes?

Yeah its v good. Not as an overview of the genre but just as a collection.

Οὖτις, Monday, 7 September 2015 21:48 (ten years ago)

Right. It's not a greatest hits of the genre, but it does touch on most of the sounds, styles and studios as well as various interesting rarities and one-offs.

There are times when I think it might be my favorite box set. So yes, very good indeed.

Fancy Fantasies (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 8 September 2015 02:43 (ten years ago)

And I now see that a number of people upthread said much the same.

Everyone should check out Sheila B's show on WFMU Sophisticated Boom Boom. Plenty of 60s girl groups and vocalists but so much more.

Man, to think that just ten years ago you could simply walk into any major music retailer and come out with this beautiful object in your hands...
