Looks interesting, it's good that the selections from the better known groups (Shangri-Las etc) are songs that don't turn up on 60s comps all the time, but no Ronettes wtf?

Also NOTHING BUT A HEARTACHE - The Flirtations = BEST SONG EVER. Got the 7" of that the other day, B-side's great too.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 30 September 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

> but no Ronettes wtf?

HE DID IT - The Ronettes

koogs (koogs), Friday, 30 September 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Oops. That was weird, I did Ctrl + F "ronettes" and got nothing! Oh well.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 30 September 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

I've got this and CHILDREN OF NUGGETS on my Amazon wishlist. I seem to get one boxset for my birthday or Hanukkah; I'd be happy with either one of these.

I'M 28 - Toni Basil

How long ago was this originally released? She was already a seasoned vet by the time "Mickey" hit, so it's not inconceivable she could've been a '60s girl-group chanteuse as well.

mike a (mike a), Friday, 30 September 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

"Nothing But A Heartache" is one of the best- it is definitely THE best of the songs that somehow fell through the cracks of my local oldies station when I was coming up.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 30 September 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

nice reperata and the delrons representation! plus whyte boots & the satisfactions' "daddy you just gotta let him in"... obligatory picky obscure ommission to bitch about: no mckinley's "sweet and tender romance"

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 September 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

but i'm dying to hear "peanut duck" by marsha gee

Toni Basil, the life and times:

After high school, she became a go-go dancer and quickly moved into choreography, working on '60s television shows like Shindig and The T.A.M.I. Show; in 1964, she appeared with Annette Funicello in the film Pajama Party, which she also choreographed. In 1966, Basil released her first single, the Graham Gouldman-penned "28"; the B-side was her recording of the title song from avant-garde filmmaker Bruce Conner's Breakaway, in which she also appeared as a dancer. Basil's acting career soon hit a peak with her role in 1969's landmark Easy Rider as a New Orleans hooker; she went on to appear with Jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces and Dennis Hopper in The Last Movie. During the '70s, she choreographed films like American Graffiti and The Rose, and also worked on David Bowie's 1974 concert tour

String Theory in the house, Friday, 30 September 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Awesome song. I guess I'm gonna have to get this or at least put it on some wishlist. RHINO BOXSET, WHY YOU BREAK WALLET?

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 30 September 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

That looks good.

Does anyone know if it's it likely to be readily available in England or will I have to order it from Rhino?

Bob Six (bobbysix), Friday, 30 September 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

koogs (koogs), Friday, 30 September 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

>Reparata & The Delrons

This is the greatest band name ever. I don't even want to hear the music, for fear of being disappointed.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Friday, 30 September 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

OMG it has "Egyptian Shumba" on it?? I know what's going on my Christmas list... Shimmy shimmy shimmy shy yi yippie dip!

Doctor Casino, Friday, 30 September 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

faith popcorn (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 30 September 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

oh man, i want this

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 30 September 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

i have roughly 70 percent of these tracks already. not a bad set, but i wish there was less overlap with all the other "girl" series out there.

faith popcorn (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 30 September 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

i'm glad peanut's "thank goodness for the rain" is on there, but "i didn't love him anyway" is her real classic.

faith popcorn (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 30 September 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

This does look intriguing. Been a good year for unofficial boxsets, might as well add a legit one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 September 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Would it really matter if the Toni Basil song were from the '80s, though? I thought the point of the box was that it included stuff that came after the '60s as well.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 1 October 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

So are Brenda and the Tabulations officially no-longer-obscure-enough to make the cut on this?

Burr (Burr), Saturday, 1 October 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
I think I've listened to "Egyptian Shumba" roughly twenty times in the last 24 hours. One of the most euphoric songs I think I've ever heard...my god...so unbelievably amazing. Folks, you need this box - it's totally worthy of all the praise heaped upon it.

Re: Toni Basil, she was also a hip-hop pioneer as choreographer and member of the Lockers.
