tonyD (noiseyrock), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

16 f0cking pounds!?! Bloody bastards.

Keith C (lync0), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

Is this different than the Japanese Island one that came out in the 90s? is it a... a... remaster?

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

they have it listed on the new release schedule for insound.com so maybe there is an american pressing or they'll import some copies or something.

tonyD (noiseyrock), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

16 quid for a single cd is a bit much.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why but can't really get into the whole No Wave scene. It's sort of boring.

Voodoo Child, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

*head explodes*

Looks like there is indeed an American pressing, too!

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

no new york kind of blows.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

what is the deal w/ the pricing? was the cd manufacturing industry hit hard by katrina?

amon (eman), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

i will be checking used bins for this cd come february 2006

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

no new york kind of blows.

yeah, seconded

Jah Pastafari (jaxon), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

No New York is classic.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

no new york kind of blows.

In what way?

16 quid is about the amount they charged in Japan. I think it was about 3000 yen, so that's about that amount. I wouldn't care though. I mean, for fucks sake, it's a classic.

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

why u smoke crack all time?

amon (eman), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

I can kind of see why someone would say No New York blows, there's better stuff available by all the bands on No New York on their other releases.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone here manage to get the Mars vinyl that came out last month?
100 on clear vinyl 900 on black. It's a great package.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

petroleum is used in the process to make cds, though i doubt margins were affected all that much since they're already ridiculously expensive.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

No New York is certainly a classic.

But it's been so extremely reverred over time, and now each of the bands featured on it (Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, aside, afaik) have had full blown reissue programs. So, it's easy to say it blows now. Also, the fact that the Japanese Island CD issue of No New York from the 90s sounded rather tinny doesn't help either... which is why i'm curious if this reissue is also a remaster.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

If it's being released this imminently, why are (almost) none of the usual online stores listing it?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Please ignore me, I am a twat.

Only £11.99 from Amazon too.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Personally, it's pretty silly that this is getting reissued on a wide scale NOW. Had a proper easily-found issue of this been done a decade ago, I think there would be fare less ho-humming.

Granted, surely legal disputes were the reason for its limited releases until now. But, it seems half superfluous to reissue this, given the great Mars, DNA, and James Chance reissues (some of which re-released the No New York era stuff) since.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it was legit when it came out in japan, and wonder about now. I also question the 4 seperate reissues rights to those tracks, I mean, I don't care, but were they all licensed from Island or did they just assume "hey, they're our songs".

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

no, new york

rjgulberry (dr g), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

"it seems half superfluous to reissue this, given the great Mars, DNA, and James Chance reissues (some of which re-released the No New York era stuff) since."

I don't know. The Mars release was a pretty limited run. The Teenage Jesus tracks, I think, are only otherwise available in their crappy remixed form on the Atavistic CD.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

well, i did say half superfluous. But, yeah, the Mars and Teenage Jesus stuff should get a reprinting.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it was legit when it came out in japan, and wonder about now.

I think it was Arto Lindsay who didn't want the reissue at the time. I'm not sure though.

I can't understand why you would think it's superfluous, it's just a great package. I realize there were better acts - or at least bands as good as the ones on NNY - but it's just a great artefact of the No Wave period. I also absolutely love the cover art.

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah the group "mug shot" stylee pix r boss.

Old School (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Something can be superfluous and still be an amazing artifact.

donut Get Behind Me Carbon Dioxide (donut), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard any of the versions from this particular LP, so I'm mainly pretty psyched to hear Eno's production on it. i hear it's pretty dry and non-existant, but whatever, Eno+4 awesome groups=alright by me.

tonyD (noiseyrock), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

it's really got little to do w/ eno. He just left then alone and caught it raw and nobody was really happy with it. Don't expect any like, frippertronics or anything.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

i really like these versions though. the contortions sound much better here than 'buy' imo and that tj+j comp is pretty horrible

amon (eman), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

it's weird. i think the contortions are way less listenable on this and dna is way more listenable.

Jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 15 September 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

i'd pretty much buy this just for dna 'size' but 'flip your face' and 'dish it out' are the ultimate contortions songs and i don't see them on any other contortions album. i could be wrong about that tho

amon (eman), Thursday, 15 September 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

Let's Talk About Eno's No New York and No Wave in General

amon (eman), Thursday, 15 September 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

where's the vinyl reissue on this, c'mon people..

(\/)¤¤kíë \€/¤ñ (mookie wilson), Thursday, 15 September 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Not superfluous, since the four Contortions tracks are available nowhere else as far as I know, are far better than anything else the band recorded (in my opinion, obviously), and are far different from anything else the band recorded. Eno's sound was way too thin, but as I recall, all the Contortions except for James thought the production, sound, song choice, overdubs, etc. on Off White and Buy the Contortions were far worse. On one of the other threads it says that all Eno did was turn on the mic, but in at least one instance his turning on the mic was crucial: "I Can't Stand Myself" was completely extemporaneous, the band as a whole had never played it before (Jody and Donny had fooled around with it), Eno said "Just make some noise while I check the levels" or something, so Jody and Donny started playing and the rest of the band joined in (you can hear James interpolate some of "There Was a Time"), and the band had no idea they were being recorded. (At least this was what Jody told me at the time.) Their best track by far.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I remember a few of us singling out that track on the "POO: No Wave Song" thread awhile back.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 15 September 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

i forgot about 'i can't stand myself', it is amazing. the bass sounds really raw on that and 'flip your face', and it's great how it cuts through the mix without overpowering. i believe 'contort yourself' is the only track released elsewhere.
