My last Basic Channel/Chain Reaction CD just split in half

Well I thought I had taken the necessary precautions that metal CD case required , but I pulled out my Vainquer CD--my favorite of the bunch--and noticed a hair line crack eminating from the center. Tried to pop it into the computer to salvage what I could but to no avail. The crack had spread all the way out to the edge. I squeezed it a bit to put the thing out of its misery and it cleanly split in two.

So that leaves me with empty cases for Maurizio, Monolake, a compilation CD, and Vainquer. My quetion is this: are all these CD's out of print? Does anyone know a place that might still have some laying around or is e-bay my only hope? I always assumed I'd be able to pick up replacement copies fairly easily, but I think I might have miscalculated. I'm really hoping to avoid having to pay "collectible" CD prices if I can...

As far as I know, the Chain Reaction artist albums are still out of print, but the Maurizio, Basic Channel, and Main Street comps are getting reissued October 4th with actual honest-to-god US distribution and in digipaks. Also a bunch of new stuff on Wackies, including the Creation Dub album and Horace Andy's Exclusively. I'd definitely wait a few months to see if any CR reissues are forthcoming before hitting ebay or gemm or whatever.

the only one of mine that has split is the chain reaction CD. the Vainquer is my favourite too though.

What I want to know is: what is it about CD's on this label that they always crack for some of you?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

Yeah all the Chain Reaction stuff is very out of print. Most of the wackies you can find in major cities or by mail order. The Maurizio & Basic Channel CD are still available as far as I know, having been reissued in 2003. I didn't know they were being reissued again.

xpost I think it is a known fact that the early BC/CR CDS were manufactured at a lower quality level than usual?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

some of them originally came in metal tins, which weakened them, why some people take them out, or store them in a sleeve instead.

I wish they'd reissue that first Monolake album. Hen's teeth! Hope you're right TT.

(on preview maybe what MF Gill said too.. I just read that on discogs)

The reissues are in nice, non destructive digipaks anyhow.

the basic channel comp was already rereleased in digipak:

xpost to barry - the metal cases require some finesse to get the cd out i think. some have it, some don't?

amon (eman), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

never mind, i'm stupid. the release date on that is oct 4 as well

amon (eman), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

I think the BC comp was originally released in Digipak form (1994). The others were all released in metal boxes, starting around 1996.

I usually don't press them very hard into the metal case since, as you guys noted, they can be so difficult to remove (a moot point now, since I store my CD's in large booklets. I guess that answers my question, then.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

I assumed the splitting problem was due to the metal CD case it was issued in. It was nice to hold, but I think it stressed the CD causing it to eventually crack. After the first couple cracked I took my remaining ones out of their cases, but I think by that time they had already begun to crack and were not long to survive.
I did find a page at CD Universe for the Maurizio CD stating it was to be issued October 4th. Now if only someone could do the same for the Chain Reaction CD's.

Yeah, I dunno why they're not doing the Chain Reaction discs (at least not yet)...maybe their rights to the recordings lapsed?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 19 September 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

I think the BC comp was originally released in Digipak form (1994).

nah, my copy is a metal tin one like all the rest

amon (eman), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

This is the second rerelease for the Basic Channel and Maurizio comps, IIRC- Boomkat claims that this time around they're remastered as well.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 19 September 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

i missed out on the maurizio the first time around so thats great news about the rerelease. i'm not familiar with the main street stuff

amon (eman), Monday, 19 September 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

The main street CD is one of the best albums ever (see this thread). you must track it down if you can.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 19 September 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

That Main Street CD does look good. I'll have to find some domestic mail order outlet in the US that carries it. I live in DC and there's no way any of the local stores will pick this up.

Joel (aquabahn), Monday, 19 September 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Blimey, I knew they were a bugger to get out but I didn't realise people were breaking them... (Didn't we have a thread about awkward packaging once? Possibly several.)

Time to rip a copy of my Basic Channel comp.

Two weeks ago when I saw Sub. and Vainqueur, someone took up a chain reaction CD to get signed by them. Watching the exchange, I clearly remember Pete/Substance opening the case and pointing at it, likely saying "you've got to take that out".

Of my two Chain Reaction CD's, one I cut out part of a jewel case and taped in in, the other is in a regular digipak though, which is nice because the disc won't break, but still, I do covet those metal cases.
