Robotobibok (don't hit me if they're Polish, though)

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 19 September 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

Wow, there isn't a single mention of the Plastic People of the Universe on that thread. Also:

Prudy
Umela Hmota
Dom

Gary Lucas had a good time in Prague, and Killing Joke are currently recording there.

themusicissue.blogspot.com -- D.C. spends August in Prague, blogs about some music adventures. Should be five or six long posts running across the month.

Look again - very first post.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 19 September 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

The Ecstacy Of St. Theresa are from there. I don't know exactly how to describe them, but to put it extremely vaguely it's ambient rock. Ahhh, I see it's been mentioned in the other threads. But I looked for Free-D Original soundtrack by them for like a year and a half and I found it in March, and it has not left my stereo since.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Monday, 19 September 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

music? i don't know. but you said "artist," in general i assume, and i know that jan svankmeyer's (sp?) studio is there. a friend highly recommended it. and she also saw ted leo at a club while she was there. if you're in to that sort of thing.

ryannyc (ryannyc), Monday, 19 September 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Man, I have been dissed by a rap group!

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Plenty of good jazz clubs to visit for live shows. I'm not sure if there's jazz every day, but when I was there last November for five days it seemed like there was live music at one of the clubs in the "Old Town" near the bridge each night. Walk around within a mile or two radius in that area and you'll find something good.

Anyone can recommend any particular venues and/or sources of listings to check out? I'm also going to Prague in a couple of weeks - but only for a week :-(

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

club 007 is where the aforementioned ted leo concert took place

ryannyc (ryannyc), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

there was this great Czech noise band gigging around Melbourne a couple of months ago. I've forgotten their name, but I'l try to dig it up

CMB, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

i was there last spring for spring break with a school group. there is a lot of good jazz, but it seemed like at least on the surface, there wasn't a whole lot of good rock. i met with some czech students over there, and they showed me this really great record store, but it was in chesky krumlov, not prague. there was this sam goody type store in wenseslas square, and they had the basic stuff you'd find in a sam goody except they also had every single sonic youth album. kinda weird. plus they labled hip hop "black music"

jonathan - stl (jonathan - stl), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

The Ecstacy Of St. Theresa are from there. I don't know exactly how to describe them

Quite easy: trip-hop!

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

CMB you're thinking of Sabot, yes?

jimmy glass (electricsound), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

A guy I know was able to pay his way for a long time in Prague by playing Velvet Underground songs on the accordion (VU are national heroes in Czech Republic, or at least were, apparently)

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

I think there's a "what to do in prague" thread on ILE, but anyone going there should check out the Palac Akropolis in Zizkov, if only the bar. Depending on what's playing the Roxy (old town) is a pretty good concert/club venue.
For a more traditional and smoky Bohemian experience, Baráčnická Rychta in Mala Strana is definitely worth going. One can also eat there.
You'll find a good schedule of what's happeing over here: http://www.prague.tv/czech/nightlife

Baaderonixx and the hedonistic gluttons (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

Robotobibok is indeed Polish.

Psi Vojacs, for sure - folky post-punk. The main singer guy did a great slightly avant-garde record with an orchestra.

Nase Vec - good hip-hop.

Petr Nikl & Lakome Barky - i picked up a great CD by them when i was there. Weirdo chamber-folk with children's choir. BEAUTIFUL packaging.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

CMB you're thinking of Sabot, yes?

yes! that's the one. Good band, see them if you can PKW

CMB, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

Buduor Staré Macy; Radusza; Traband; NOI; -123mins.; tons of great bands, many led by rockin' females, and all are more interesting than 98% of English language stuff. DO NOT DESPAIR.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Second all thee above, also see if any of these are still around:

go to the Easy Listening section of the local record shops, and buy some of the "Lovely Time" series of records. Then you will have a lovely time.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

you ARE heading to musical desert, you really are :) i can tell, I live here...

czech bands which you should care about:

Supercroooo/Dixxx - electro hip hop
Peneri strycka homeboye (Orion & Wladimir718) - hip hop
Folk3Mail - psycho-folk
ememvoodoopöká - psychedelic indie/punk
Moimir Papalescu & The Nihilists - stupid electro/fabulous shows
Sunshine - electro punk rock, already releasing in the States, might be realy big in few years around the world

& slovak bands who also often play in CR
Karaoke Tundra - leftfield instrumental hip hop
Kontrafakt - hip hop with live instrumentals

dont expect to see Prudy or Umela hmota, unless you own a time machine. Plastic Peoples are old shaggy men, some of them already died and their concerts prove thing some people might forget - they cannot play their instruments.

karl76 (karl76), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

according to a friend who just returned from a trip there, the inescapable tune is something called "captain hook" by these people, Chipz. enjoy!
http://www.skyradio.nl/sites/skyradio/specials/chipz/chips.jpg
Nanananana
Ohoh wah oh wee oh (4x)

He's back, a miracle
Back again
The king of the pirates
We jump, into the book
You don't wanna miss the adventure

This is a pirates life
I guess it is
This time we're gonna fight
Come on, we're ready
And all you have to do
Just think one happy thought
And you will fly again
(Revenge is mine)

[Chorus]
Captain Hook, Captain Hook
And Peter Pan
Captain Hook, Captain Hook
In Neverland
You're such a crook
Now, Captain Hook
One can tell by your look
Captain Hook

Nanananana
Ohoh wah oh wee oh (2x)

Tinkerbell and the Lost Boys are here
In line, on a quest for the treasure
We stand without any fear
We got to pull them out of the water

This is a pirates life
I guess it is
This time we're gonna fly
Come on, we're ready
And all you have to do
Just think one happy thought
And you will fly again
(Do it again)

[Chorus] (2x)

Peter, come back and fight me
Haha
Are you ready, poppy
Hahahaha
He crows, he fights, he flies
Muahahahahaha

Nanananana
Ohoh wah oh wee oh (2x)

You are such a crook
Now, Captain Hook
One can tell by your look

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Aha, Moimir Papalescu & The Nihilists - YES!
You should def. go see them, esp. since they seem to play every week in Prague.

Baaderonixx and the hedonistic gluttons (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

dunno what current czech music is like. but people who could find solace and commingle the velvets and the mothers of invention (even though lou reed and frank zappa were busy spitting venom at each other) have to be capable of producing some great sounds.
