(graphics-friendly ilxors plz insert pix of tony wilson/inspector blakey at this point kthnxbye)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

My reasons for posting these in brackets :

46. Monsoon - Ever So Lonely 12" (always lots of love for 80's 12" mixes and there was a lively discussion about later Monsoon albums at one point)

47. New Order - Everything's Gone Green 12" (best 12" ever? - a whole thread debated this. An ILX primer needs a New Order track)

48. Althea and Donna - Uptown Top Ranking
49. Derrick Laro and Trinity - Don't Stop Til You Get Enough (The reggae/disco crossover was all the rage on ILX 2 or 3 years ago. Don't Stop seems like the best examples, and Uptown is a sort of prototype for this. Also I noticed that no Jamaican music was in the list so far.

50. The Flirtations - Nothing But A Heartache (Not enough soul up to that point. Also this is so great that I want everyone to hear it. Maybe everyone has, but still....)

51. The Raspberries - I Can Hardly Believe That You're Mine (The regular powerpop/70's radio rock threads are so great that a prime example of this MUST be in an ILX primer as a pointer towards them).

52. X-Ray Spex - Identity (Either The Adverts or X-Ray Spex seem to be the ILX punk champions whenever we have a punk thread, so I wanted to include this).

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

I heared 47 at lunchtime, and had forgotten that Barney sings EXACTLY the same tune on Blue Monday...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Also, I'd forgoten how much of a dog's breakfast "Procession" was.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

The New Order track should obviously be from Technique

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

"Procession" is outstanding!!!! WTF.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

The New Order track that most makes me think of ILM is "All the Way"

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

I forgot how differently UK and US people think about music. Plus, I realized how fast I would have hightailed it out of here three years ago (AND MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE) if these really were the iconic songs of ILM.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh I still love it for that reason!

But, it is, though.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

(in re: my comment above: by which I don't mean 'this is all crap,' far from it. more like 'where's the diversity / breadth / scope / depth of the musical discourse')

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

The Streets track maybe Weak Become Heroes?

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Dem 2 - Destiny (this track regularly thrown up as the paradigmatic example of 2-step in a lot of threads)

Destiny's Child - Bills, Bills, Bills (for fans and haters alike: the production, vocals and lyrics sum up the best/worst (depending on yr perspective) of millenial R&B which for a time was a divisive issue in the great pop wars of early ILM - yes, folks, there was an anti-R&B contingent even prior to nu-ILM!)

The Beta Band - Broke (indie's attempts to come to grips with modern pop, and a favourite of many high-profile posters)

The Sugababes - Freak Like Me (bootlegging goes overground)

Laurie Anderson - O Superman (the archetypal avant/pop collision)

The House Crew - Euphoria (Nino's Dream) (Gareth singlehandedly made this the ILX Rave Tune)

The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers (disco-punk lands on ILM)

Madonna - Holiday ("did" "disco" "die"?)

L'Trimm - The Cars That Go Boom (Chuck Eddy Pt 1)

David Banner - Cadillacs on 22s (crunk gains critical acceptance)

Big & Rich - Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy (nu-country broadens its horizons; Chuck Eddy Pt 2)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

we had an argument the other night at a fap. who's banana nutrament?

first cousin to Mangosteen Nutrament if that helps

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

i've still never heard 'O Superman', foolishly

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

My Mind's Playing Tricks On Me - Geto Boys
No Hits - Black Mountain
Be Mine - Robyn

Right?

marc(drums) (marcdrums), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

That's the worst Scorpions hit!

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

i'd like to throw in Braxe & Falke's 'Rubicon' now, the ILM buzz about it prompted Falke himself to post, and it's different enough from 'So Much Love To Give' to warrant inclusion (not that SMLTG should be the token French disco track or whatever)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Kraftwerk - Anything (Loved by everyone across the board; ILM dance, hip hop and rock fans can all find something to like in them)
Joey Beltram - Energy flash (oft cited rave track)
Killing Joke - Love like blood(Not widely loved by ILM, but deeply loved by Alex in NYC)
Lloyd Cole - Rattlesnakes (Not widely loved by ILM, but deeply loved by the pinefox)
Subway Sect - Ambition (A punk song that's always come through any punk revisionism untarnished.(by not being punk))

Bidfurd__, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Definitely Steely Dan and Fleetwood Mac should be there. And some Def Leppard, maybe "Photograph". Would I be over-optimistic in suggesting Yes' "Starship Trooper"? "Helena"? (I might just be selective in the threads I read.) "Hollaback Girl" or "What You Waiting For?"? "Sk8er Boi"?

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Anal Cunt should be on there

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Len - Steal My Sunshine (summer absolves all sins)

Fleetwood Mac - Hold Me (the ILM fave, it appears)

Justin Timberlake - Like I Love You (Ned and Dan hate him, you know)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Lloyd Cole: 'Man on the Verge'

the pinefox, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

(this thread needs more Outkast, I also fear)

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Justin Hayward - Isn't life strange?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. Should I go request things in the other YSI thread or here?

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

other than Nu Shooz's "I Can't Wait," we're skipping whole genres here!

Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam - "I Wonder If I Take You Home"
Debbie Deb - "When I Hear Music" and "Look Out Weekend"
Shannon - "Let the Music Play"

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Justin Timberlake - Like I Love You (Ned and Dan hate him, you know)

If you picked "Senorita" there wouldn't be a problem!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Britney has evidently outlasted those that would seek to juxtapose her sweeeeeet can (perhaps with The Sweet, or Can).

-- Sociah T Azzahole (stevem7...), October 4th, 2005.

My bold tag acts like the red pen of a teacher on your paper. Pointing out your mistakes with the hope that you will change them or at least realize your facts are wrong or at least OLD.

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Outkast "B.O.B."

nervous (cochere), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

If there is to be an outkast track included I really think it should be 'SpottieOttieDopaliscious'.

Bn1 (Bn1), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Nah, the funny people here go nuts over B.O.B...not really sure why. Oh that's right - "genre busting."

I will add:

Quarks: I walk (Superpitcher Schaffel mix)
Belle n Sebastian: Your cover's blown
R Kelly: Ignition remix (yeah, it pains me too)
Lil' John & Usher: Yeah (see above)
Laid Back: White horse

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

i am slowly becoming happy with this list (esp where people have mentioned the debates spawned)

i wonder if i could work out our ILM champion (MR ILM or Ms ILM or whatever) based on points for 1) own the track (10 pts 2) heard the track (5pts) 3) heard of the track (2 pts) and the kicker 4) mentioned the track on ilm (20 pts)?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

Banana Nutrament is John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats, isn't he? Sounds like him, anyway.

Passerby, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

a thought

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

whyte boots, "nightmare."

a good, though probably overrated, '60s girl-group classic, with shangri-las-style talking, essential for all girl group discussions.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 6 October 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

this thread so far, btw, will leave the reader woefully underprepared for any ILM metal thread. i'm not the best person to fill in the key tracks. but someone should.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 6 October 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

One must know 4'33", must one not ? It does exist in recorded form.

blunt (blunt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

some asshat floated around a 4'33" mp3 a while back on the lesser P2Ps. opened it up in a wave editor and it was jsut a blank file. kinda misses the point.
