That's a stimulating and thought-provoking list.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

If you want to have a go at writing, talk about your most over rated album, or just have a say on what makes you tick, then you could always write a blog.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

i think it's basically otm, though is 'ok computer' really rated that highly these days?

N_RQ, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

I wonder how this list compares to the "Best Album" as voted for by 6Music listeners.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

coldplay is overrated by who ??

AleXTC (AleXTC), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

As Pete Doherty sang once, "One and the same..."

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

sgt. peppers and maybe nevermind next.... and then maybe never mind the bullocks.

jack dee, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Radio 6 listeners in "being fucking boring" shockah.

Don King of the Mountain (noodle vague), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

That's a pretty fair list, at least for the UK. Here in America, the Libertines are totally not rated, and Oasis's ship sailed years ago.

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Should we be reassured or depressed that most groups of people, if asked to vote up a "best albums" and a "most overrated albums," will produce basically the same list for both?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Though I suppose it's just basic statistics, isn't it. A 45% plurality votes Album X as the best thing ever. The other 55%, who voted for something else, can therefore be assumed to believe that Album X has been overrated. You don't even need to do the second poll.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I was just talking last night about how I think Never Mind the Bollocks is underrated. No one ever actually talks about the Sex Pistols' music. That album is terrific.

Nigel (Nigel), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

It isn't, though, is it?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

actually, it is.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

apart from some lingering sympathy for pet sounds and the queen is dead, i'd say NMTB is the only good album on that list.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

overrated and misproduced heavy metal.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

what could be better? ;)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

NMTB production is too much, but that has become part of it, and there are some great, great songs there.

The attitude, lyrical content and packaging were entirely different, but there was always lot of denial about how close punk was to heavy metal on a musical level. I never had a problem with that as a spotty teen, and I still don't.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

The album is overly rockist.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

only in retrospect surely m? or maybe not. i don't own a copy. but i did.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

no i thought it was crap when it came out. there weren't actually any decent punk albums, were there? it was definitely singles-orientated.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:21 (twenty years ago)

Over and above the actual quality of NMTB - and I think it's pretty decent - fact is, it usually appears on people's top ten lists as the token punk album next to nine items of incongruous crap. So it belongs here. The top ten punk albums . . is a completely different thread. Arguably, NMTB might not feature.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

The album is overly rockist.

oh what the fuck does that even mean?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

My point is that no punk album would feature in the top ten punk albums list.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:40 (twenty years ago)

germfree adolescents, cut, this year's model, crossing the red sea with the adverts, the clash, NMTB = all more than "decent" albums.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

Incorrect in five of your six examples. Also two of your six examples are not punk albums.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

whatever.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

there's a point where this becomes ridiculous

splates (splates), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)

No, that was the fourth Oasis single...and they are definitely not punk.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:51 (twenty years ago)

that "wibbling rivalry" b-side was pretty punk.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

i have to ask: which of my six albums do you approve of? and which two aren't punk (i assume one is TYM, which is fair enough)?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

The answer to both your questions is Cut, which is strictly speaking post- punk, though their Peel Sessions album could qualify.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

if you don't think germfree adolescents is a great album, i don't know what to tell you.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

It's a bit meh, isn't it? Poly Styrene's vocals sort of grate after a while, like mistakenly-digested Polyfilla.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

Almost as bad as Hazel O'Connor actually.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

lora logic's sax more than makes up for that - though come to think of it i actually might prefer essential logic to XRS, at least some of the time.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

it's that sax which undoes it for me as well. without poly styrene you might as well be listening to a bad marianne faithfull album from 1976 with roxy music as backing band.

i mean, when you think that this was the same time as teenage jesus and the jerks - is this the best that britain could do?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

gimme a break. the first thirty seconds of "oh bondage up yours!" alone blows away all of no new york.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:16 (twenty years ago)

no they don't.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

well, this has been a fruitful discussion, hasn't it?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes it hasn't.

I assume the Elvis album is the other "non-punk" album.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:43 (twenty years ago)

Wait, where's In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, don't they read Pitchfork? ;)

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:46 (twenty years ago)

Alright, here is a thread to propose Great UK punk (1976-8) albums...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

Heh. Marc, that was beaut, I don't even want to spoil that one.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

Not a bad list, if you substitue Blood on the Tracks or Abbey Road for Never Mind the Bollocks.

Burr (Burr), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

no-one likes 'abbey road', though!

N_RQ, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I would agree with Nevermind being there as I've never been able to see the appeal of Nirvana beyond everyone wanting to go with the "tortured genius" idea. Pet Sounds and Loveless are far better examples.

I also think Never Mind The Bollocks is underrated, especially by the critics who will wax lyrical all day about The Clash and their right-on attitude. I much prefer the Pistols' chaotic, carefree take on things.

Finally this is about the only "Most...." album list Coldplay should be anywhere near, horrible aural disease that they are.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Is X and Y even that highly rated?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

I love the suggestion upthread that the b-side of Wibbling Rivalry is punk in comparison to the A-side, can some people argue about that while I go to work?

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

re:

-- N_RQ October 4th, 2005 12:57 PM.

are you mad, it's the number 1 rated album of the 90s on rateyourmusic.com.

http://rateyourmusic.com/top_albums/b1_is_1990_and_b2_is_1999

Every poll for the alltime best albums always has OK computer in the top 5.
