The WORST Nirvana song

The following was proposed on another thread...

No one in Soundgarden had any REAL FUCKING TALENT. This should be immediately obvious. Even the worst Nirvana song is better than 85% of Soundgarden's output.

But which is in fact the worst Nirvana song?

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

"Nookie"

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Freebird

feminazi (feminazi), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

tourettes

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

"One Step Closer"

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

"Rape Me" is pretty bad.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

It's certainly no "My Wave"

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

I like Soundgarden, but "Free Bird" may in fact BE better than 85% of their output. Disturbing...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh, come on, Mark - next you'll say you hate "Smells Like Teen Spirit!"

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

In my opinion, it's "Scentless Apprentice."

richard wood johnson, Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Aero Zeppelin off Insesticide. But the worst that anybody knows is Milk It

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Whatever's most metal.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

This is a POO?

The Man Who Hates Half of Nirvana, Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

ive never really liked any version of "polly."

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

"She Hates Me"

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

But the worst that anybody knows is Milk It

"Milk it" has an awesome chorus riff though, maybe the best in the Nirvana catalog.

richard wood johnson, Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Polly

400% Nice (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

"Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle".

The weakest song on their weakest album.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

"Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle". The weakest song on their weakest album.

That one grew on me. I really dig the way the feedback works into the song.

richard wood johnson, Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

I adore the intro on "FFWHHROS"

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

... so who's heard the Box Set here? There are surely some choice cuts for this thread.

(I'd previously downloaded the rough draft of most of it, but haven't heard it myself).

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

the Ween ripoff from the box, "Beans," wins this for me, btw

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Too many to choose from.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

I was just about to suggest "Beans," actually. But I think I'm going to third "Polly" now.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Beans is pretty catchy actually, but yes, it obviously does not sit well alongside their general oeuvre.

richard wood johnson, Thursday, 6 October 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

"Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" works in the context of the album, but as a song it's junk

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Thursday, 6 October 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

"Beans" or anything on the second half of Incesticide besides "Aneurysm"

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 6 October 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

having spent the last week relistening to the box over and over again for a kerrang! feature, i can confirm 'beans' is the worst nirvana song, closely followed by 'blandest', then 'clean up before she comes'

'milk it', 'frances farmer', 'aero zeppelin' and 'scentless apprentice' are some of my fave nirvana songs!

foxy boxer (stevie), Thursday, 6 October 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

This is already a thread.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 6 October 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

I had Blandest on a godawful quality tape years back, I thought it was really good in its way. Not keen on Polly either. Or Dive.

DJ Mencap0))), Thursday, 6 October 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Worst Nirvana Song

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 6 October 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

"Scentless Apprentice" seemed cool and world-weary at the time and now just seems whiny.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 6 October 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

And the answer to this question is still "On A Plain"/"Pay To Play", 13 years later. Zzzzzz.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

YOU KNOW YOU'RE RIGHT

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

how anyone could think dive was the worst nirvana song is beyond me

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

You mean "Stay Away"/"Pay to Play"?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 6 October 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

the devo cover on insescticide? maybe?

xavier mcshane (xave), Thursday, 6 October 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Mexican Seafood

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 6 October 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Never liked "Scentless Apprentice" or "Very Ape." I *could* be weird though & unable to appreciate these "gems."

salexander (salexander), Thursday, 6 October 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

"Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle".

The weakest song on their weakest album.

-- Stewart Osborne (stewart.osborn...), October 6th, 2005.

you are insane.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 6 October 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Mr. Snrub nailed it. The rest of you are insane.

donut hallivallerieburtonelli omg lol (donut), Thursday, 6 October 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

Some weird answers here--I mean, have you guys heard "Pen Cap Chew," say? Even avoiding rarities/b-sides, it's unclear how you could pick something that's not on Bleach. (OK, except maybe for "Francis Farmer.")

EppyIsNoLongerWaitingForGas, Friday, 7 October 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

Francis Farmer is awesome.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 7 October 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

"blandest" is a really good song!

richard wood johnson, Friday, 7 October 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

Only Bleach, Nevermind, and In Utero should count.

And Frances Farmer is one of the best songs on their best album.

Nigel (Nigel), Friday, 7 October 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

sifting

6335, Friday, 7 October 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

how anyone could think dive was the worst nirvana song is beyond me

I don't hate it, there just doesn't seem to be much to it, and not in a cool way. Anyway, I forgot about You Know You're Right, which is far worse than both the ones I cited, so hey

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 7 October 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

"Gallons of etc"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 October 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

personally, i think "dive" is GREAT, easily one of their best songs. its very simple (like a lot of nirvana songs), but very massive sounding and catchy and powerful.

my vote, "moist vagina" or "pen cap chew". "very ape" from In Utero is kinda weak, but its a good filler piece.

and "Milk It" and "Scentless Aprentice" are awesome, whats up with you mentalists.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 7 October 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

You mean "Stay Away"/"Pay to Play"?

That'll teach me to post after the pub. Yep, that's what I meant.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

All together now: "HEEYYYYEEEYYYEEEEYYYEEEEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.... HEYYYEEYEYYEYEYEYEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.... HEYYYEEYEYYEYEYEYEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.... yoouuuukknnooowwyouu'reeeraaughghghghhhhhhhhhh."

That's it. That's the chorus. Man, if I recorded a song that shitty, I'd want to kill myself too.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Milk It is my favorite Nirvana song behind Lounge Act.

Bleach had a few lame-os, my pick would probably be Big Cheese. I love Nirvana and I've never even taken the time to load that amateur bitch onto my ipod.

Shaun (shaun), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Actually I believe it's even worse - not "HEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYEEEEEYYYYEEEE," but "PAAAAAAAAAIIIIINNNNNNNNNAAAAAAIIIIINNNN." Ugh.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

"you are insane."

I'm aware that I'm in a minute minority, but I still think Bleach shits on In Utero from a great height.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

"I still think Bleach shits on In Utero from a great height."

I love Bleach, but that is an inane statement.

Nigel (Nigel), Friday, 7 October 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

FRANCES FARMER RUUULLZ! That's prolly my favorite Nirvana song!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 7 October 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

"I love Bleach, but that is an inane statement."

It was a shorthand personal statement, but I'm more than happy to elaborate if you want.

To start with, I loved Bleach when I first heard it.

When Nevermind came out it was significantly more rock / metal than my normal tastes, but completely redeemed by some fantastic songs and memorably passionate performances.

When In Utero came out it sounded to my ears like another step further towards traditional rock / metal, without either the quality of material or the passion in the performances that Nevermind had to redeem it.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 8 October 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

When In Utero came out it sounded to my ears like another step further towards traditional rock / metal

really? cos to me, when In Utero channels 'metal', its about as far from 'traditional rock' as they get..

foxy boxer (stevie), Saturday, 8 October 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

i think stewart's got it backwards---"Bleach" is their MOST metal-sounding album.

still, "Bleach" is probably the most fun nirvana record. some of the songs are kinda weak-sounding on their own but played together as a whole it rawks like a motherfucker.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 8 October 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
wat the hell nirvana are the greatest band ever they changed 90s rock an every album kicks ass. period

Ben Simpson, Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

And yay Nirvana for changing 90s rock!

More Seven Mary Three plz...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

My vote for "Scentless Apprentice" here. Horrible.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 27 October 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

And Geir is back!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 27 October 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

It's a tough call, because each Nirvana song is worse than the last.

moley (moley), Thursday, 27 October 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

DC Talk's cover of "all apologies" where they changed "what else should i say/everything is gay" to "what else should i say/Jesus is the way"

Charming Tedious, Thursday, 27 October 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

I never liked Big Cheese

Voodoo Child, Thursday, 27 October 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)
