The Tea Party

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 31 October 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

This is the thread where we reminisce over not particularly good Evening Session bands from the late 90s

Michael A Neuman (Ferg), Monday, 31 October 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Not the U.S. '60s psych band Tea Party, surely? I have two of their tracks on compilations and they're really good. Never heard the album.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 31 October 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

The bands that don't deserve their own thread are the ones that are so obscure that few people would actually be able to contribute to the conversation. "Bad" bands that are hugely popular can still be discussed, even if it is to say how bad and/or boring they are.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 October 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Not the U.S. '60s psych band Tea Party, surely?

Rob doubtless refers to the Canadian 90s band that wants to be the Doors, the Mission and the Cult all at once. You can judge from that description.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 October 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Ned, of course, is correct.

On grounds of mediocrity - Tar, Surgery, Vertigo, all that lot.

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Monday, 31 October 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

First Vertigo single is supposed to be really good. I used to kinda like Surgery.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 31 October 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

BTO

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 31 October 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I think they (Surgery) were actually maybe a bit of a cut above, songwriting-wise. Same goes for Trash Can School.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 31 October 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

BTO? "Taking Care of Business" deserves a thread all by itself! (Not because it's good, but because it's a cultural touchstone for a certain middle-class union-card dollar-beer Classic Rawk demographic that we're gonna miss when they're gone.)

Oh sure, several BTO songs deserve threads (and BTO probably > Guess Who), but what is there to say about BTO as a band, really?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 31 October 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Monday, 31 October 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

The bands that don't deserve their own thread are the ones that are so obscure that few people would actually be able to contribute to the conversation

Yeah, re ILM. Grinderswitch. Struggler-perisher hard rock/metal bands from '69-'74 or '77. There's about four or five people (+/- standard error) who know the stuff and if they don't show up for the thread, it croaks.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 31 October 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

The Tea Party have at least two threads devoted to them. I know because I started them. And this is so so so wrong I don't know where to start:

BTO probably > Guess Who

("These Eyes"! "No Time"! "No Sugar Tonight"!)

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I found a great example of an as-yet unanswered thread that fits the "too obscure to be discussed by ILM" bill:

rare 80's synthpop: Moral Support (anybody heard of them?)

And I definitely know of this group, too. Though I've only heard a few of their songs ("Strange Day For Dancing", "Parade Ground", and "Living With Passion"). So the poor thread remains answerless. Aw.

This Field Left Blank (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha, yesterday I saw someone wearing a Tea Party sweatshirt. But hey i was a fan of them back when I was like 10 or whatever. Hahaha, reminds me of the time I went to sell my copy of their album i bought for some reason, at the same time this woman came to actually buy Tea Party CDs, and was just going on for some time about how good they were. Well it was funny when it happened.

The Tea Party defenitely doe not deserve their own thread, at least coming in praise.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

Despite the fact that they just had their own thread, Kon Kan.

Guayaquil (eephus), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

I remember the two Tea Party threads well, since there was a time about 11 months ago when ILX was fuXX0red and the New Answers page was just the same set of threads over and over again, a poor man's Last Year At Marienbad or Invention of Morel, and these two threads were among the walking zombie participants. Sundar had started one thread saying how much he couldn't stand them and then at a later date another one saying he couldn't believe that he found himself liking one of their songs or videos.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

But I really came here to post my answer to the question- Scruffy the Cat. They did scratch up a ho-hum mention on a verbosely-title Scott Seward thread at one point, which was about right.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 04:05 (twenty years ago)

Heh heh...so it's true, then: At least until Stormy and Chuck weigh in with their opinions and approval, I AM THE SOLE TEA PARTY FAN (first 3 LPs only) ON THIS BITCH! And I've explained why several times, but I know I'll never convince anyone, so I won't even try. It's not even the first time I've been totally alone, surrounded by naysayers. Anyways, I think it's kinda NOBLE to be the lone supporter of a band - talk about defending the indefensible!
(And just for the record, Ned, they do NOT sound anything like the Doors, but for the fact that their singer has a voice uncannily similar to Jim Morrison's.)

Band that doesn't deserve their own thread? Toby Beau. Yes, that IS the name of a band, not an individual. (Quick! Name their big hit!)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

Telephone Poles Kick Ass!!!!!

You guys should here them now.

Voodoo Child, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

I say the thread belongs to mediocre (or even outstandingly awful) bands who are most notable as members of some large trend or fad. What's there to say, really, about Hot Action Cop, the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, or the Youngbloodz?

I think Winger deserves a thread, though. In fact, all of these bands probably already have threads.

...and:
Limp Bizkit
Vanilla Ice
Kenny Loggins

viborgu, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

I have just tried three times to post the name of a popular 80's band that comprised two blonde (twin?) brothers on drums and vocals and their geeky mate on bass however it has been rejected on each occasion, leading me to the conclusion that higher poweres (Ned, maybe?) have already decreed they are not even worthy of a post, let alone a thread.

Morn, Stew!

Area Code 615!

I saw a double-pack album set the other day. "Stone Fox Chase" wasn't on it. So, they must have made three or more albums! Who knew!

Oh come now - Bros is totally deserving!

Sorry for stirring up the Tea Party pot there. I just have a burning hatred of them and their music.

How about some other CanCon artists not deserving of their own thread:
-Strange Advance
-Len
-Frozen Ghost

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

How about a group that became stars of their own documentary series, and NOTHING ELSE! ?

"FMB"

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Well, after all I did actually buy that Tea Party CD, but then again I didn't think it was that good when I was 10 or whatever, and I couldn't even sell it. I 'm prtty sure I ended up snapping it in half and punching the case, along with a group of older cds I hated in a breif fit of rage some years ago.

bros still sound great- 3 brilliant albums.
craig left after debut.
they should have put 2 new songs on greatest hits and promoted it.

brosboy, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

Bros' "When Will I Be Famous" is awesome in an early boy band/dance pop kind of way, no doubt made more popular now in dance circles thanks to Sascha Funke covering it.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

Curses to you, Rob Bolton, for getting Strange Advance's "I'll Be The One To Cry" stuck in my head. Argh. Even though there are bits in that song that are really good, it's overall OTT nature means... no way.

Um, anyway. I've just done a search of ILM and noticed that there hasn't even been a mention of Cee Farrow, who did "Should I Love You" and other similar disco-wave songs. All around great fun. Unfortunately, I found out he passed away ca. 1990 from complications due to AIDS. Aw. Anyway, I'd be surprised if more than just a handful of individuals here know who Cee Farrow was (perhaps being "before your time", though he was before my time too and I'm aware of who he is), and ergo it'd be very surprising if a thread about him didn't end up responseless.

Voice of the Beehive

someteenpartying, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Gee, Rob Bolton, if you continue naming shitty Canadian acts from the '80s, you're almost going to erase all the work that Martha & the Muffins and The Payola$ did to help build up a great '80s Canadian New Wave legacy. I mean... well, Strange Advance was... well, passable, but LUBA? Ick.

This Field Left Blank (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 3 November 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

Tripping Daisy is totally under-rated. Mostly because of that rather crap I Got A Girl thing. But now, with Polyphonic Spree taking off, they're ripe for relistening. Of course, I say that with only the vague memory of their album being good, since I don't have it anymore... BUT I COULD GET IT AND THEN HAVE A THREAD!

Maybe Econoline Crush or Stabbing Westward? Or nearly anyone who's ever won a Juno award...
